I made up this saltflats crab for a discord prompt. They grow salt crystals on their shells for camouflage, and have scoop shaped pinchers to skim algae and insect larvae from shallow brine pools. A crab species that adapts to live on vast evaporated ocean plains. Speculative biology(?)

5- Vampire Squid
Their scientific name (Vampyroteuthis Infernalis) means ‘Vampire Squid From Hell’, which is cool but misleading. These animals are actually closer to being octopi than squid, and their diet is mostly ocean detritus, which is largely waste from other animals.

If you look in the background of this piece, you’ll see the same object over and over again. That object is what the vampire squid looks like from underneath. Its arms have teeth. I was trying to make the drawing look pretty, but this is what they actually look like:
Obviously, these aren’t actual teeth. They’re just fleshy cirri line the creature’s arms- completely harmless. But some poor scientist got a look at that view and went “this is a creature from hell” before we ever found out what its actual habits are.
