On this day, 12 February 1945, the treaty of Varkiza was signed in Greece, when anti-Nazi partisans, most of whom were communists, agreed to surrender their weapons in return for amnesty and participation in politics. However the Right failed to hold up their end of the bargain and began mass arrests and killings of communists. It was a key event in the buildup to the civil war, in which the Greek government, including Nazi collaborators and supported by Britain and United States, fought the Greek resistance movements. The resistance had also been abandoned by the USSR who had made their own deal with the US and UK, in which Greece was recognised as part of the British sphere of influence in return for Eastern European countries falling within the Russian sphere. The conflict lasted for years with the eventual victory of the Right. * We only post highlights on here, for all our anniversaries follow us on Twitter or Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@workingclasshistory https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/2207875402730931/?type=3

a tiny problem
this probably hasn't made the news in other countries - huge mining company Rio Tinto managed to lose this little capsule (8 x 6 mm) somewhere in West Australia:
it's caesium-137, the stuff that has made Chernobyl uninhabitable, and you don't want to be standing within 5-10 meters of it, because it's blasting out beta and gamma rays. you REALLY don't want to pick it up, because it'll give you radiation burns.
what's nuts is it seems to have somehow escaped from its "secure" container and fallen out of a bolt hole while being transported, and then nobody noticed for TWO WEEKS.
anyway there are fire fighters on their sixth day of scouring 1,400 km (!) of desert road right now, but it's so small that it may never be found (I think the detection radius with the equipment they're using is maybe 20m). it's so small that it could have stuck in a car's tire treads, or been picked up by an unfortunate bird or other wildlife. it has a half-life of 30 years, which means it'll be dangerously radioactive for centuries.
it's just an incredible fuckup on so many levels.
here's an article on this:
One expert calls for tougher radiation safety measures as an urgent warning remains in place over the disappearance of a highly radioactive
"At the moment, I don't think anybody can quite believe that something that's highly radioactive has fallen off the back of a truck"
Of course it's fucking Rio Tinto. The company that knowingly demolished an aboriginal sacred site with evidence of continuous human habitation through the Ice Age, the company with a heinous history of worker abuse, pollution, and environmental racism, one of the top 100 greenhouse gas producers, the one that literally collaborated with the Axis in WW2, that Rio Tinto? I'm shocked. You're telling me they can't be trusted to handle radioactive material? I hope everyone involved in these Canadian, British, American, Australian mining companies gets what's coming to them, as soon as possible.
Rio Tinto is a terrible company, but the story is horribly written and in old journalist terms this story has “buried the lede,”. So I ask: WTF is Rio Tinto, a mining company, doing with caesium-137???? That’s the real story.

We’re a trans couple who can’t pay rent and bills without help. I’m physically disabled and haven’t been able to find work I can do, and we still don’t have access to our benefits. For food, electric, hot water and rent we need £1000 for the month.
If you are able to help, this is my PayPal and this is my Cashapp.
