Sooooo... Sonic fans. Imagine how different the lore would be if Maria survived Space Colony Ark.
She'd still have NIDS, yeah, but let's assume that Gerald eventually finds a cure for it. Or even better, Maria grows up to be a scientist and cures herself.
And like, imagine Shadow without trauma or Gerald screwing with his memories to posthumously avenge his dead granddaughter.
And what about Eggman? In those voice memo things in Frontiers, he implies that he grew up neglected because everyone around him was so focused on Maria's death. It can be inferred that's the reason Eggman turned out the way he did. So would he even still be a villain if Maria lived? If not, 99% percent of the series would never happen.
I just can't stop thinking about the fact that the entire Sonic canon is an indirect consequence of a twelve year old girl getting shot by the military.

The funny thing about Dr. Robotnik being called Dr. Robotnik in the English localisation is that "Robotnik" is a real surname, but the localisers apparently had no idea – they just took the English word "robot" and stuck a vaguely Russian-sounding suffix on it because it was the Cold War and "vaguely Russian" was shorthand for "evil" in American popular culture. Dudes tried to lazily come up with a name that evokes "evil robot guy" and accidentally made him Polish.
