“Art is happening everywhere all of the time” but an awful lot of it seems to only ever happen in New York and London, doesn’t it?
i think the main reason i now consider mike flanagan my parasocial enemy is all the butchered thohh quotes in his "adaptation". like is turning two women who have a romantic sort of relationship into sisters enough to hate him? yes. the fact that hugh crain in the book is a character who is implied to be abusive (potentially sexually as well) towards his children but in the show is not only a loving father but also Falsely Accused Of Abuse is also bad enough to warrant hate
as is the fact that shirley jackson's actual writing is quoted in the show as the writing of a self-insert man. even when you don't take into account how her namesake on the show is a mother and a housewife (something that people used to dismiss her) and she's Not the writer in the family
turning a tale about the alienation from nuclear family and profound loneliness in a patriarchal society into one about familial love triumphing over the external forces and traumas is enough to hate it in my opinion
however
i could very easily ignore all of this if the direct lines from the novel were not baked into the show. if they were not torn from the very pages and then mutilated into the exact opposite of what they were. i will never get to experience that story the way it was meant to be experienced because the quotes are permanently distorted in my mind. the incredible writing that made an impression on me was very clearly just badly stitched onto the fabric of the show but it was where i first felt the impact of the words. even removed from the story and context they had a quality hard to look away from. but now in the actual novel they seem almost out of place despite actually resonating with the themes in a way they did not in the show
and for that mike flanagan deserves to be locked up in hill house for the rest of eternity or at the very least not allowed to adapt anything else ever again
in general i think the book and the movie or tv adaptation of the book are two different things and i try not to judge the one on the merits of the other. but on the other hand i also think that mike flanagan should get locked in a little room for one hour every day for the rest of his life and during that hour he has to meditate on his choice to conceive and film the line "and whatever walked there...walked together" and if his thoughts wander he gets shocked with a little Device of some kind

We Should Be Well Prepared
by Mary Oliver
The way the plovers cry goodbye. The way the dead fox keeps on looking down the hill with open eye. The way the leaves fall, and then there’s the long wait. The way someone says we must never meet again. The way mold spots the cake, The way sourness overtakes the cream. The way the river water rushes by, never to return. The way the days go by, never to return. The way somebody comes back, but only in a dream.
