She rolled her eyes, though she couldn’t quite stop herself from smiling either. It was nice to be in his company and not to feel anger, hurt–not to feel the overwhelming desire to throw something or to run away. It was the most present she’d felt in a week, like she could sit in this one chair at this one table with this one person and not lose her mind because of it. She took her second shot with just as much ease as the first, and if she was being smart, she’d have stopped there. But Jude waved over the bartender for another. 

Her eyes lit up. “Moonshine! Do you think we could find some?” She’d never tried Moonshine–never even knew what it was–until she’d come to Texas. There, there was nothing easier than to find a friend–or two or three–who made it in their garage. Before the game, Jude, hoping to get pregnant, had stopped drinking all together, had been planning to ask Cam if they could start trying; but before that, she’d always tried her best to drink him under the table on any of their dates. 

His eyes widened when he saw her wave down the bartender again. “You weren’t kidding when you said you wanted to have several drinks huh?” Cam slung his arm around the back of the chair next to him, leaning back and stretching out. The fact that they could even be here alone, getting along, was nothing short of a miracle on all accounts. For the time being, the thing that had actually upset her so much when he ran into her was pushed to the back of his mind, becoming the least of his worries right now.

“I’m almost positive you could find some but why on Earth would you want to? It’s like 70% alcohol.” A low chuckle left him as he remembered the last time him and his friends had the chance to hang out and drink before he even moved to California. “One time some buddies and I were hanging out and one of them decided to bring moonshine and play a game with it, you remember Ryan? Ryan had to take a shot of it after he lost a game of corn hole to Mason, started coughing as soon as it hit the back of his throat.”

He shook his head in disbelief, running a hand through his hair to reshape it again. After he took the third shot he asked for something different, giving the bartender free NPC range to come up with whatever they wanted. “Question. Do you drink more now than you did before the game? I remember you had stopped for a while after we moved.”

Jude grinned. She’d never really understood Fourth of July–why did America want to recreate bombs? And why was it not even held on the day they’d gotten their independence? But she had still worn an American flag t-shirt to the government office when she’d gotten her citizenship. “I liked your grandpa,” she recalled fondly. “Brave man.” She had been most scared of his grandparents–she had been told that older people in America didn’t really like immigrants. But his family had always been kind to her, had welcomed her in like their own. It was a strange thought to realize now that she would probably n ever see them again, even if they did get out of this game. 

“You’re a good karate kid,” she assured him, reaching out to ruffle his hair before turning to the bartender and ordering two tequila shots–or at least, the Velia equivalent. When they arrived, she tapped her glass to his and threw it back without flinching. “I’m not a superhero,” she added, grabbing a lime to suck on. “It’s more like….paying attention to the world,” she tried to explain. “Really feeling the elements, letting them guide you.” 

He gave her an annoyed groan before running his hands through his hair to fix it. “Hey woah, the hair is an art Jude haven’t you been to a museum before?” His tone was joking, giving her a hard time just for the sake of it. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t still impressed and attracted to the fact she could take the shot like nothing. Clearing his thought to get out of the daze she put him in, he took his own shot and set the glass down on the bar, flagging the bartender down for another. 

“Again, impressive, to me at least. You’ll have to show me what you can do sometime.” Cam always thought anyone’s craft aside from his own was interesting and could find something about it that was enticing. Picking up the newly filled shot glasses, he winked at Jude, an old, comfortable smirk resting on his face as he raises it in a cheers before knocking it back, crinkling his nose in disgust. “You know if the taste on this tequila is this bad I can’t imagine what their moonshine tastes like.”

She smiled a little more–first to see him stuffing away muffins (she always liked to see her baking appreciated) and then at the offer: an old game they used to play, when they went back to the same bar where they’d met–the mechanical bull in one corner, the darts came and the pool table in the other. “You mean do I want to kick your ass at darts?” She teased. “Yeah, I do. Let’s go.” She slip her arm through his, pulling a crystal from her inventory to take them both away, though they had to leave the building before they could disappear. 

“I’ve been working on some fire spells,” she told him. They had appeared on Floor 54, the old west town, where she thought Cam might feel more comfortable than the hustle and bustle of the city on 52. She gestured toward a pub not too far away. “You’re not scared of fire, are you?” 

“You know the only time I’ve ever been scared of fire was that Fourth of July when my dad and aunt knocked an entire bag of fireworks into the one they had just lit.” A smile filled his face at the memory. At the time he had ducked behind his uncle who was sitting in a chair, you know, reflexes so he wasn’t hit by a firework. “My grandpa sat there and watched the whole thing from his chair, only mildly concerning considering he was in the middle of it all.” 

He was grateful that this was the floor she chose, any of the bars on Nova would’ve been hard to talk to her and if he was going to get used to being her friend he had to be able to talk to her, not just watch her drink. “You know, mages are so cool, imagine being like a real life- well this isn’t real life but you know what I mean, super hero. On the other hand, I’m like tall, old, blonde glorified karate kid.”
