Send a SASE! This week, V and Emily take a look at the illustrious -- pun intended -- life and career of Big Name Fanartist and writer Beverly Zuk, whose Fanlore page is a riot of full-frontal Vulcans. We look at the fascinating fic she wrote, particularly "The Third Verdict," and read through her instructions of how to become a fanartist in 1978. Plus, we marvel at the Star Trek Welcommittee and their work to help fans connect in an age before the internet made connecting simple, if not always easy. The key thing we take away from Beverly Zuk's legacy is that fandom is about being a fanĀ together with others.

there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.
short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.
meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.
always a sucker for wingfic! putting cody in the jar and shaking him for @drowninginmytbr
Overall, the most challenging element of the entire situation was the disappointing lack of professionalism in the conduct of his fellow officer.
After the third full minute of laughter, Codyās patience had thoroughly expired. He took a deep breath through his nose, manfully refrained from rolling his eyes, and let the breath out again.
āWhenever youāre done, captain.ā
The unspoken which had better be soon evidently managed to filter through the fluff Rex held between his ears, as Rex finallyāfinallyāexerted some decorum and began to literally smother his giggles, pressing his hands over his mouth like a tubie. He remained doubled over, the side of his face pressed into Codyās bunk where heād partially collapsed, his helmet abandoned during the first wave of laughter. Rexās eyes were bright and his cheeks stained with tears. Heād been weeping at Codyās misfortune. Weeping!
They were at war and Rex was laughing in Codyās face.
If anyone in Codyās vicinity should be weeping, it was Cody himself.
āSorry, Cody. Sorry,ā Rex said, only to break off with a hiccupped giggle. He wiped his eyes on Codyās bedsheet. āSorry. Iām stopping.ā
āYouāre on laundry duty. Forever.ā
āI know.ā Another hiccup. Rex rolled his lips between his teeth. āWhew! Iām done.ā He coughed and straightened to standing, where he smoothed down his chest armour as if it had become creased. He cleared his throat. āDone. Iām done.ā
His gaze remained fixed on Codyās face, determinedly so, like a shiny confronted with their first Twi-lek.
Cody arched a brow. The one on the scarred side, so Rex knew he meant business.
āAre you sure?ā
A nod. āVery much so.ā
āThen if I do thisā āCody twitched one of his new appendages and the tiny, useless wing sent a waft of sparkles billowing over Codyās shoulder, straight at Rexās smirking faceā āyouāll be⦠Thatās what I thought.ā
Rex collapsed to the floor with a howl of laughter. Multicoloured sparkles stuck to his eyelashes and joined the constellations of shiny Force-knew-what already caught in his hair. Cody sighed. It had been an hour since heād returned from the planet with the ancient temple, trailing a slug trail of sparkles throughout the Negotiator, and he had yet to devise a stratagem for recovery, because his second couldnāt stop laughing about it.
And they hadnāt even gotten to the part about General Kenobi.
āDo you think heāll be much longer, Commander?ā Kenobi asked, his voice nearly lost beneath Rexās cackling.
Cody tapped the collar of his armour, nudging against the tiny hands holding on the rim. Kenobi hadnāt wanted to ride in Codyās utility pouch, and had instead requested the view from Codyās shoulder; as a result, heād become nearly invisible within the plastoid. Rex had yet to notice him.
Finally getting his general into armour had not been worth the price.
In response to Kenobiās question, Cody shook his head. Toeing Rex none too gently in the side, and getting only a red-faced giggling squirm of clone in response, Cody mentally wrote off the rest of his afternoon. He found himself wishing that General Skywalker were around, instead of off adventuring with Commander Tano.
That was what the situation had reduced Cody to: wishing for Anakin Skywalker to fix a problem.
Cold horror washed through Cody.
āI think Iām going to check in with the medics,ā he said.
I'm opening up commissions again, at least temporarily, and I've added pfp/avatar commissions, as well as updating other options and prices. If you're interested, here's the commission info in the video above:

Your drawings are absolutely beautiful! If you still take suggestions (100% understand if you don't, I know I'm always pressed for time and energy too!)⦠since you love Rebels and mentioned actually liking the Rebels style best for the clones, I wondered⦠would you be interested in drawing a pic of an older Waxer and Boil with Numa in her Rebels appearance, in a happy AU where they both lived and came back and adopted her? It could be the two of them giving her a "sandwich hug," or just Waxer hugging Numa, if you only want to draw two characters (Boil can be "holding the camera!")
Absolutely NO pressure to draw this if you don't want to or don't have time, like I said--it was just a suggestion! š
This is so uncanny! My sister and I were just talking about grown-up Numa with her nerras!
(extras & progress shots under the cut)
Ah. Rebels!Numa and Rebels!older clones, my beloveds
now what were your great-grandfathers' jobs. that's more interesting. mine were a factory worker / industrial baker, a security guard, a lawyer, and a dairy farmer.
One was a boilermaker. One co-owned a bakery with his brother, then worked in a paper mill. One was an office clerk, then a merchant marine for a while and then worked for Shell. And the other was a metal worker in a factory that made parts for trains.
I donāt know about you guys, but I have a hard time keeping the terms for various parts of clone armour straight in my mind. So, I decided to make this Guide To Armour, to make my life easier for those times Iām drawing or writing stuff and need to reference what this, that or the other piece is called, how itās put on or taken off. (Iāve also tried to include/come up with some casual or slang terms for some parts because you cannot seriously expect these guys to use the Right Proper Terminology for everything all of the time.)
This is based on the Clone Wars cartoons, because thatās what I know best. Also, this is just the standard armour of regular troopers; if yāall want something about the possible additions/variations that you could have then lmk and Iāll see what I can put together I guess?
Note: a lot of this terminology is taken from medieval knightsā armour. Many terms are originally French; alternative names provided where possible. I did do a bit of research on medieval plate armour, which is the closest thing I can think of to clone armour, but I am by no means an expert so if you have any input or corrections feel free to @ me. Likewise, if youāve cosplayed as a clone trooper or stormtrooper, Iād very much like to hear about your experience wearing this stuff, how it moves and how it might be similar or different to the āreal thingā so to speak.
Figure 1: Clone trooper armour, front view. Kix got chosen for this because heās a vain little bastard and loves to be painted. (ETA: this diagram now comes with a second, funnier version.)
