this was a topic that my outpatient therapy program went over a lot, drawing the line between like. yeah, you could just focus on your own needs. you may not owe anyone anything. but that’s not how u foster relationships and build connections and find happiness. no, you shouldn’t be sacrificing your own needs to consistently please others and no, you shouldn’t be letting people overstep your boundaries. but you also need to let people in and you need to do things for people if you want to find contentment in life.

The costume design in Andor is absolutely stunning, and I love how different locations, different cultures are given a clear colour palette: the Empire is black white and grey, Chandrilans wear elegant blue-white-golds, Ferrix is all dusty warm clay and brick colours, Aldhani mostly raw natural browns and greens, Ghorman a subdued but posh set of browns, blues and beiges. It was the AMCA podcast that pointed out to me that some costuming choices in Season One prefigure the eventual iconic orange of the rebel flight suits: the orange overalls of Ferrix workers, and then then orange highlights on the prison garb on Narkina 5. These are the people the rebellion comes from.

And season two followed this trend with a beautiful lack of subtlety.

After Mon Mothma makes her speech, when Cassian tells her "welcome to the rebellion", she has cast off her own blue jacket and is wearing Cassian's brown. It's good practical camouflage but it's also a visual shorthand telling us she's truly one of them now.

When Syril is on Ghorman, he starts wearing Ghorman colours in addition to his customary Imperial monochrome, a maroon scarf, a bronze suit, he plays his role until he mostly believes it. And in his last moments, having lost faith in the Imperial project, he dies wearing a light-brown Ghorman trench coat.

And then there's Dedra, who we've never seen wear anything but stark Imperial white and black, not even when she's off duty, at home. In her last scene, she's wearing prison overalls, the Imperial white marred with prison orange, rebel orange. No matter how much she hated the Rebellion, no matter how hard she tried to destroy it, in the Empire's eyes she's now no different from them: a scavenger, a rebel spy.
