survival 101 / fire & miyu

He got it right? “Ah-ha!” He grins along with the vocal fanfare, feeling pretty good about himself. Did she sound Sinnoh too? Bah, he couldn’t remember how anyone sounded from that way back. Let’s go with Yes.

“About as far as you? Kanto,” he indulges her, before she could get the idea that he meant Sinnoh. “It’s been a while, but I spent a good chunk of time around there looking for all the lakes and caves they’re supposed to have out there, full of legendaries. Wasn’t a bad time.”

And he might’ve seen a special sight or two, but was a stranger going to believe him, five minutes after them meeting? It didn’t matter; the memories along kept Fire cheery. The scent of damp grass and enclosed spaces waft in the places that the odour of the seeds permitted it to, a reminder for how dense the forest was they were in.

“I was here before, Unova, but I decided to come back since I was in the area… there were a few spots I never really got to go that I wanted to last time.” He looks back to her, the curious glint in his eye easy to miss. “But you’re pretty far from home. What made you pick Unova?”

Out of anywhere for anybody to go, and for someone he could easily, somehow, mistake for a more recent initiated into the life of aimless wandering.

Miyu simply nodded as Fire vaguely mentioned his explorations of the Sinnoh region; despite being originally from there Miyu hadn’t seen much of it. She was certainly going to have to return one day and do a bit of exploring of her own, especially of those mysterious lakes.

Fire made up for Miyu’s silence with his own chatter, which she didn’t mind, until he directed a question at her. She looked up at him just in time to meet his curious gaze, and she couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at her lips.

“Oh, um--” It was a little silly, but luckily Miyu wasn’t easily embarrassed. “I flipped a coin.”

Actually, it had been a series of coin flips that had led to her journey to the Unova region, and so far she felt that fate hadn’t let her down, despite a few small setbacks. “I plan to visit all of the regions one day. Kanto may be my next destination.”

She expanded on her answer just a bit; it wasn’t fair that Fire had been the one contributing to the majority of the conversation, after all. But then it was Miyu’s turn to be gripped by curiosity. “Have you been traveling for very long?”

“Oh, you’re right aren’t you?  Well, I didn’t in the end so that’s all that matters.  I wouldn’t be able to haunt a house with a ghost that just tried to shank me.”  He didn’t seem to particularly care that he was insulting the ghost, but no knives came flying at him, so perhaps the feeling was mutual.  “I’m Whit.  You have an awful lot of stuff with you, so you must be a traveler, huh?”

They entered the dining room, which like the living room was blocked into a maze with furniture.  “I hope we can find that Abra you were looking for.  I’ve never seen a wild Abra around here, so I’m sure it has a trainer looking for it somewhere.  I’m pretty confident it’s in here though!”  The confidence was certainly coming from nowhere.  It was probably because he could see for once.

“Why do you think all this furniture is like this?  It forces you to go in one direction.  I mean, I guess that ghost could move stuff so maybe it moved the furniture like this.”  Whit stopped walking for a moment and rubbed his chin, hard in thought.  “Wow, I hope we don’t walk into some trap at the end of this maze.”

He shrugged and continued walking.  “Well I’m sure it’s fine.”  They came to stop in front of another door, but they also had the option to walk upstairs.  “So which direction do you think the Abra went in?”

As suspected, the other had already forgotten about his very close encounter with death, which was concerning. Miyu deliberately stayed a few steps behind Whit just in case he happened to incur the spirit’s wrath again; the last thing she needed was to be caught in the crossfire.

“Yes. I was on my way down Reversal Mountain when I ran into that Abra.” Miyu confirmed, staying vigilant for any stray pokemon (or knives, for that matter). Her backpack was very full, and probably appeared too heavy for her but over the past few months her body had grown quite used to the extra weight. 

As they entered the next room, Whit’s misplaced optimism cheered Miyu up despite herself. She nodded in agreement although his back was turned to her, trying her best to channel that energy. 

“I don’t think we’re walking into a trap.” That was her channeling the Whit’s positive energy... or it was her desperately trying to convince herself that a ghost would have no reason to go through the effort of leading unsuspecting humans to their deaths. The pair finally reached a crossroads, and Miyu sighed. Was this going to end up being a life-or death decision? If that was the case she certainly wasn’t going to leave it up to Whit, who had nearly gotten himself killed within seconds of walking into the house.

“Since Abra can teleport...” Miyu sighed and brought her hands up to massage her temples. “I guess it could be anywhere. Let’s try the second floor and work our way down. Maybe we’ll get lucky and cross paths with it.” With that she took the lead, her weight on the steps causing the wood to creak ominously.

“Oh, don’t worry about it.  I’ll feel bad if I don’t repay you.”  Also, he really wanted normal food himself.  He was sure his Pokémon would come after him soon enough if he didn’t get them a 5-course meal at some ridiculously fancy restaurant.  Yukio was glad to hear that she was willing to travel with him for a bit.  To be honest he was getting tired of talking to himself; it was nice to see a human face.

His face twitched at the tent comment.  “I don’t use tents, but that just means there’s even more space for Pokémon to play.”  With that he stood up and unclipped his sleeping bag off of his backpack, finding a nice spot to roll it out.  His Spritzee floated towards it and laid down on the built in pillow.  “See, all set up!”  Yukio returned to his spot at the fire.

“I drink tea sometimes.”  He watched Miyu as she set her items up to make the tea.  If he were perfectly honest, she was doing a significantly better job at camping than he was.  However, he didn’t pretend to know anything about camping, or cooking, or fishing, or scavenging, or making fires, or survival in general.  He was mostly just out to have a good time, and so far nothing bad had happened.

“You’re pretty much a master at cooking on a fire, huh?  That’s pretty neat.”  He pulled his knees up to his chest and rested his head on them.  “I’ll be honest, my fires turn to embers pretty fast once the sun goes down.”  That was being generous, they usually turned to embers as soon as he turned around.

“Well iff you insist, then... we can talk about it some more later.” Miyu was still reluctant to accept such a generous offer, so she thought that if she ended the conversation there Yukio might just forget about it. That was her hope, at any rate, as she watched him unroll his sleeping bag on the ground.

“What do you do if it rains?” Miyu asked, mildly concerned as she poured clean water from her canteen into the small pot before setting it on top of the foldable metal stove to boil. She reached into a sachet and added a generous pinch of dried leaves into the pot, twisting them between her fingers to break them up a little. Yukio’s comment caught her off-guard, and she widened her eyes slightly in surprise.

“Me? Hardly...” She almost wanted to laugh, no one had ever called her a master at anything before. It seemed that Yukio had a wildly misguided impression of her. “I just followed a recipe. As for building a fire, it’s not so hard once you have the hang of it. I just follow the steps I read in a magazine.”

She took her original seat, leaning over to fish a worn-out notebook from her bag. Opening it, flipping through the pages she landed on the page she was looking for and leaned toward Yukio to show him the magazine clipping, which was taped to the center of the page and surrounded by neatly hand-written notes. “See? ‘How to Build a Campfire in 5 Easy Steps’.”

No problem, Red already has an idea of how to get her down. A pokeball had been thrown to the bottom of the tree, as he’d stepped back, and from it, had been released his Snorlax.

Just jump down onto Snorlax, he wont mind. He probably won’t notice either considering he’s asleep. Or at least, that’s what Red was scribbling onto a page, which he then held up to the girl in the tree.

Miyu had a vague idea of what the other had in mind as a very massive Snorlax appeared on the ground below her feet -- at least, a very unpleasant image appeared in her head that she hoped was the wrong impression. Alas, her thoughts were only confirmed by the handwritten note on the page held up to her, and Miyu watched in bewilderment as the Pikachu jumped from the trainer’s shoulder to scurry up the tree, standing beside her for only a moment before jumping down onto the fluffy belly of the sleeping pokemon below.

That was a joke... right?

A small Pikachu was one thing, but was it really okay for a fully grown adult human to jump onto a Snorlax that way? Sure, Miyu was a bit on the scrawny side but -- that was beside the point. Shifting her weight uncomfortably, she reluctantly began to inch forward, pondering the best way to land. Feet-first certainly didn’t seem like a good idea, so she decided to try to belly flop as the Pikachu had demonstrated... only, she slipped, resulting in a very awkward mid-air flip. However, with a frightened shriek she landed safely right in the center of Snorlax’s belly.

Flat on her back, staring up at the branches above her Miyu allowed herself a very relieved sigh. After a moment she seemed to remember that she wasn’t alone, and with shaky limbs she slid down to the ground, giving the giant pokemon a pat.

“Seems like I was lucky that you just happened to have the perfect pokemon for this situation.” Miyu turned her attention to the trainer, who now seemed much taller from her new perspective. “Thank you, who knows how long I would have been stuck up there if you hadn’t come along.”

Returning to her backpack resting against the base of the tree, she began to stow her book into the front pocket. “You must be wondering why I was stuck in the first place.”

The corners of her lips twitched upward into a wry smile at the thought. “There was a Skitty stuck in that tree. At least, I thought it was stuck, but apparently -- ah.” Miyu’s eyes narrowed as she jabbed a finger toward the bushes where the supposedly distressed pokemon had disappeared earlier. “There’s the miserable little thing. It left me up there all day and now it’s come back to taunt me.”

Please. Please don’t pay attention to the smell. It’s not a natural odour, we swear.

“Great!” comes out as soon as the offer’s accepted, Breloom still gonna Breloom and not changing in the slightest to the news. Fire takes one look around their surrounding area (was there any issues in the way? which would be the best getting back on track to the camp?), but looks back as she begins to speak— oh, time for the exchange of names. 

“Fire,” he introduces himself, a thumb pointed to his person. “But Miyu, that’s, huh… Sinnoh? Am I close?”

Hoenn wasa big no, and that left Johto, Kanto, and then land of lore itself, unless there was a region. He couldn’t say what attracted him to pick that between the other two, but heck, maybe he was far off from her place of origin. Regardless, he’d found a good direction to get them on route—going the way that Miyu probably came in from, if the direction she went into the pond gave anything away.

Because, you know, she probably didn’t want to hoist herself up from where he’d made his dramatic run/fall down from, and a more relaxed route. There would be enough trouble with any feisty pokémon or itch-inducing plants along the way.

Fire was an interesting name. That was Miyu’s immediate thought as the other introduced himself, but it didn’t last long as he caught her by surprise with his next statement.

“Yes, that’s right. Snowpoint City.” She was impressed that he had been able to guess that just by her name alone and, perhaps also her accent. Although she’d lived in Alola most of her life bits of her Sinnoh inflection still surfaced at times. “Have you been there?”

Actually, now that she got a good look at him -- shoes with worn soles, his backpack looked as if it had seen quite a lot of use, and comfortable clothes for traveling. He seemed like a well-seasoned adventurer, likely much more experienced than she was.

“What about you, are you very far from home?” Miyu could detect a faint accent, and if she were to guess she would say either Kanto or Johto -- but decided to allow him to reveal his origins rather than taking a mostly blind guess.

Viola couldn’t disagree with Miyu’s point of view, even if she had never thought of it quite with food in mind. But it may be something she should keep in mind in the future with her own travels, though her mind was far more in the present, and now.

A good thing, with the small figure of Rin so happily circling around her, keeping her from from taking her steps, but laughing at her energy, and still brimming as Miyu speaks.

“Yes, yes! And I like you too,” she offers the pokémon, finally on the move herself now, catching up to Miyu’s side. “I nearly forgot to say, my name is Viola. If you have any questions about Kalos, don’t hesitant, just ask me right away. I can tell you one or two things about bug types too! And I’d love to know more about your pokémon as well.”

Especially if she had more unknowns like that little aloaln vulpix there. Did Kalos have any vulpix of their own? Just somewhere, tucked far away. What a thought! A quite exciting one, at that!

Nearly every decision or thought that Miyu had was made with food in mind! That was just the way things were when you lived on the road. Sometimes you quite literally didn’t know where your next meal would come from. However, this close to civilization and (luckily) with a bit of pocket money to spare, Miyu wasn’t worried and was already beginning to daydream about fresh-baked bread and sweet golden honey...

Her thoughts were interrupted before she could start drooling, her companion introduced herself as Viola, a lovely and fitting name.

“Does the gym in Santalune focus on bug-types?” Miyu asked, trying not to sound too disdainful. Any pokemon could be good pokemon , after all.. it was just that bug types were so... buggy, and annoying.

It didn’t take long for her thoughts to drift back toward food, and as she saw the tall buildings of Lumiose City rise in the distance she remembered something. 

“I heard somewhere that Lumiose City has a specialty pastry.” Miyu paused for a beat to recall the name. “A ‘galette’?”

★ —          — hello, johto! this is dj mary with some breaking news! more fossils have been discovered in the unova’s desert resort. their founder, unova-native, akura kanemoto, is a long-time partner with pewter city’s research lab in kanto, and has generously handed over his findings. they will be up for sale in the goldenrod city department store. first come, first serve, trainers! good luck!  

daiki audibly groans at the television. just when this game of hide and seek was getting stale, akura kanemoto makes yet another petty power play. first slateport city, now this? it’s no doubt he’s trying to get daiki’s attention. and akura never had regard for lines, if they were ever drawn.

The other’s callous sarcasm didn’t seem to bother Miyu at all, in fact the edge of her lips twitched into a tiny half smile as a shooing gesture was made in her direction. Rejecting her offer to help (not that there was much she could do for his situation in the first place), the pink haired mail knelt down to inspect the bike, speaking more to himself now than to anyone who may be listening.

Hiro grunted, shaking his head in disapproval. How dare anyone speak to his trainer in such a manner – but a soft pat on the top of the head was enough to relax him immediately.

“I understand.” Miyu replied simply. Then, her steps carrying her forward once again, she passed the tall man and his motorcycle, seemingly carrying along her own way. But a short distance off, she stopped suddenly and turned to face him again, holding up an index finger as if she had just recalled something. Seeing the sun beginning to set over the horizon had reminded her of an interesting piece of information that she had recently read about.  “Oh, just one thing before I go. Don’t worry, it’s relevant to your situation.”

“Drowzy and Hypno are native to this area. They’ve been known to lure victims into the woods at night.” She tapped her chin as she pondered that statement. “The guidebook didn’t say what they do with those victims, but it can’t be good, right? Oh, and there’s no moon tonight so unless you have a flashlight or know how to make a fire -- have fun playing around in the dark with wild Pokemon.”

Adjusting her grip on the bundle of firewood to the other arm, she used her free hand to point in the direction she was walking. “My camp isn’t far from here. Just a couple of minutes that way. You’re welcome to accompany me there.”

“Since you’re more interested in spending your time out here, the bathroom accommodation are quite… open.” Sephy let her put her things aside onto the porch. Somewhere in the front, Caltha was floating happily in circles around the Phantump. It had a friend just like it to play with, she was eager to show off their prized garden. 

“I think they’ll get along just fine,” Smiling, she extended hand in front of her. “As for the garden, there are two major parts.” Pointing towards where she was harvesting spinach earlier. “This is the vegetable garden, its producing fall vegetables.” 

Gesturing now towards the back of the house, she quickly made her way past the vegetables. Around the right side of the house you could smell the garden before you could even see it. The area behind the house was wide and colorful. There were flowers and succulents near your feet, always be mindful of your feet for saplings. 

“Back here, this is the flower garden. I grow my own flowers which I use for medicine and to dry for herbal teas. I’ll be needing help around here to weed the garden and water it. Do you think you can help with that?” 

“It really is impressive.” Miyu had already complimented the garden before, but as Sephy pointed out the two different areas it was certainly worth saying again. With so many plants surrounding the house it was no surprise that Sephy would have the need to look for an extra pair of hands now and then. Miyu was looking forward to working in such beautiful surroundings.

Meanwhile Taiki’s interest had shifted from the surrounding plants to the Pumkaboo, cooing softly before turning around in a slow circle, mimicking its movements.

“Yes, I can do that.” She answers with certainty when Sephy poses the question. Then, shortly after, an admittance. “I don’t have any experience caring for plants but l’ll do my best.”

And Miyu was a quick learner.Judging from the size of the garden it was a lot of work for just one person to handle, so she planned to do what she could to ease some of the burden off of her new employer’s hands.

As hilariously awkward and stiff the ‘save’ was, his arms letting her free and Miyu managing to find her own balance again, Fire could feel his heart rattling in his chest from the clumsy collision of the two. But still, better that than the floor for either of them, and he gives her ’Thank you’ a “No sweat,” with the humour of it all in the delivery.

And for a moment, the shock that Miyu had expressed was forgotten, only a silly thing replacing it—until Fire sees her hand, the averted gaze, and the reality of the what they’re involved in returns, slipping the smile from his face. 

“Why would someone… put them there?”

“To hide them,” he wagers, taking only a second to respond, his tone now more sensible than it was before. He lifts his chin to glance back to around where Miyu must’ve seen the victim’s eyes. “Everyone noticed the chair missing—they must’ve had the idea to come in here to hide them. It’s easier to stick a pair of eyes somewhere if your hands are free.”

He makes the gesture of hiding an item away in thin air, then looks to one of the heavy wooden ladders in the room. Climbing a ladder wasn’t unreasonable, but maybe it hadn’t crossed the killer’s mind. Make use of what’s around you. The chair couldn’t have been that heavy to move.

Fire turns back to Miyu, and with a look to her bloodied hand, he takes it by the wrist while grabbing a fistful of his labcoat, beginning to wipe away at the mess coating over her fingertips.

“Here—do you wanna get cleaned up? I doubt the murder weapon’s going to be around here too. We can go to the bathrooms or kitchen.”

With that said, Fire then leans in abruptly, bringing his mouth close to her ear; voice hushed, stern, whispering: “We need to find out where people were before they went into the room. Who saw who. Finding the weapon isn’t going to be enough unless it’s on them.”

When he leans back out, he has his eyes fixed on her, no longer the easygoing ease in them, but a focus. His stare only slips away to nudge her clean hand with the fingers of his—and the pokéball in it, red and white.

“Take Breloom with you. Just in case.”

For safety.

It still hardly seemed like the best hiding spot for a pair of eyes, in Miyu’s opinion, but she supposed that when you’re in a hurry logic sometimes escapes you. Or maybe someone who murders people and takes their eyes, only to immediately discard them, wasn’t very much for logic in the first place. But the question still burned in the back of her mind; why take the eyes in the first place?

Her thoughts were interrupted as Fire began wiping at the blood on her hand with the end of his lab coat. Miyu wasn’t used to being the one losing her cool, and she couldn’t say that she was particularly proud of that she had... but she didn’t exactly hate it either as she watched the red streaks disappear from her fingers, staining the white fabric of the coat. 

Allowing a sigh to escape her lips, along with a second expression of gratitude, Miyu blinked as Fire leaned in close. She went stiff at his hushed tone in her ear for a moment, nodding silently in agreement.

When he pulled away Miyu felt his fingers brush against the palm of her clean hand; looking down she saw the pokeball placed there. She looked up at Fire, the initial hint of confusion in her eyes quickly giving way to a rare softness just before she averted her gaze.

“I’ll be sure to keep it safe.” Miyu assured him, although it was clear that Fire’s intent had been the opposite. Tucking Breloom’s pokeball into the pocket of her dress, she silently hoped that she wouldn’t have a need to call him out anytime soon. “Maybe we’ll run into someone on our way to the bathrooms.”

And now it was back to business. She couldn’t forget, they were still trapped in the house with a murderer. She lightly closed her other hand into a loose fist, trying to ignore the sticky feeling on her fingers.

“Let’s go now. I doubt there’s much more here to find.” Miyu turned to leave the room. If depositing the eyes here was a hasty decision -- which the chair seemed to suggest -- whoever had put them there must have left quickly after. “We should be careful. Being covered in blood might make the others suspect us.”

Her remarks on his outfit were a little too literal for what his teasing had been, but he’ll take it, more interested now in where she was going, walking closer over to her with the intent on watching her. We don’t want her to go accidentally falling off, now—

spoke too soon.

Or, not really, given the rather nice! compliment he was about to hear from her, his calls for her to finish her sentence—"Look what? Like what? Miyu, don’t get shy…“—failing when he realised her shock concentration. The grin from his face vanishes, and he repeats her name more firmly a second time, questioning her, watching her arm move…

And it’s not the floor she falls to but into him, with the only thing stopping them from collapsing in a heap on the ground being the chair Miyu stands on. Her unusual height knocks her back into his face, digging the pads of the fake glasses hard into edges of his nose; but for as awkward as it is he gets his arms around her stomach, reassurances muffled into her cape and, holding her tight, he takes a hope-filled step back to get her feet first on the floor safely. 

Scratch that, the both of them. Just do’t wiggle too much, and you shall be saved, and Fire free to breathe air once more.

After taking a step back, Miyu felt her foot land on nothing but air sending a second thrill of fear down her spine. The gut-wrenching feeling of falling, however, stopped abruptly as a pair of arms wrapped firmly around her, saving her from a potential disaster.

The pair stumble back a step before Miyu is lowered to the safety, her feet touching the ground once again. Using her clean hand she gripped the sleeve of Fire’s lab coat to steady herself.

“Thank you.” Miyu averted her gaze, trying to steady the trembling in her voice and in her hand -- which she held stiffly in front of her, red streaks across her splayed fingers. “I think--”

Taking a steadying breath before continuing, “I think I found Casper’s eyes.” She finally forced it out, her gaze fixed on the blood on her hand. “Why would someone... put them there?”

He glanced to the young woman of tiny stature, already attuned to her accusatory front. Her intentions were to either pin blame or rouse some act of defiance out of him. Though not appreciative of the tone she took with him, Jean-Benoît simply looked back to the task at hand and continued his work.

“That they would be,” he agreed, lacking any emotion in his voice–a simple matter-of-fact. He couldn’t claim that he had never seen silverware used for gruesome violence, so her notion was, in fact, true. “But dirtying them would be counterproductive to my duties, would it not?”

“Hmm.” Miyu tapped a finger to her chin contemplatively. The butler’s non-committal response wasn’t exactly the confession she was looking for, but it also didn’t absolve him of guilt. “I guess it would be.”

But he didn’t exactly deny his involvement in the crime, did he? In fact as Miyu continued with the questioning she felt more wary of this individual as ever.

“Did you know Casper very well?” Putting forward another inquiry, this time slightly less confrontational and laced with curiosity. Casper was one of the hosts, after all, and this man was the help. Surely they must have had some sort of relationship? “My condolences, if you were close.”

Sylvia was pacing back and forth in the Ballroom, absolutely beside herself as violently twisted hair around her finger.  She was absolutely useless, completely and utterly ineffectual in this house, and hopeless to top things off.  Okay, sure, she’d seen lots and lots…and lots of dead bodies, but not one that was just freshly knocked off!  Nor had she seen one with their eyes completely ripped out of their head – that was certainly new.

The information that the chair had been found in the library wasn’t of great comfort.  It didn’t tell her much of anything other than they felt the need to go to the library for…some reason.  She couldn’t fathom a reason; it’s not like she could even tell if anything had been out of place.  Sylvia had spent a few minutes in the library when she first arrived, but she hadn’t exactly felt the need to map the entire thing in her mind.

Was it her job to solve a murder?  Let alone a murder of someone she didn’t really know very well?  She was going to lose her mind at this rate; she certainly didn’t come to this house expecting to do police work, nor was she aware she was going to be rendered incapable of doing the only thing she would normally be able to do in order to help solve this mystery.

Sylvia turned around to continue her pacing only to come face to face with another party-goer.

“AAH– oh, Arceus, sorry, you scared me.  I’m a little on edge right now–”  Wait, for all she knew she was face to face with the murderer.  She straightened up and coughed into her hand.  “I’m sure everyone is a little high strung right now.  Are you planning on helping investigate?”

After learning that none of the doors leading outside of the mansion wouldn’t open, Miyu had taken it upon herself to identify the murderer before she met a fate similar to Casper’s. She had read enough mystery novels to know that even the people who mind their own business or try to hide weren’t safe -- so naturally the solution was to discover the dangerous party in order to avoid them (and by extension, a violent death). Because logic. 

That was easier said than done, it seemed, as the trail of physical evidence didn’t appear to speak much about the details of the murder. But that didn’t stop her from taking a mental note of everything she had discovered so far.

Making her way through the estate in search of a quiet place to think, Miyu decided to try the ballroom. All of the other guests seemed scattered about the house, but she didn’t think that anyone would be in the mood for dancing as she pushed open the heavy doors to the large room -- only to find that it wasn’t empty. Someone was there, anxiously pacing the floor, and they didn’t seem to notice as Miyu approached.

Very suspicious behavior, Miyu couldn’t help but think. Or maybe it was normal behavior for someone who had recently witnessed a gruesome murder scene. Regardless of the classification her nervous pacing fell under, Miyu didn’t bother to hide her mistrust of the stranger.

"I’m conducting an investigation of my own.” Miyu replied quietly as she watched the other pull herself together. Would a murderer be this jumpy after killing someone and removing their eyes? Perhaps. “What are you doing here?”

Miyu was a woman of maximum level of emotion displayed with a moderate level of boredom. A part of Fire might’ve liked more from her in relation to dead body and someone amongst us is a murderer, but hey: You can’t turn a pidgey into a spearow, and you couldn’t make Miyu what she wasn’t.

“Oh, it’s me,” he mimics with an attempt to sound like her, but the grin her reactions gets out of him fails him spectacularly. Miyu, a pidgey, through and through.

But did he expect her to be out here and around playing detective? The casual factual natural (bactual- okay, nevermind) of her simply put explanation gave reason for a raised eyebrow, despite what Fire already expected of her. He looks down at the legs of the chair of Miyu’s earlier interest, looking back to her as he answers, “Too many old books for reading. I didn’t take you for a detective though.”

He swings an obvious scan up and down of her body here. “I thought you were meant to be a witch.”

Is now the time for jokes? Too bad, have a joke.

Miyu was in the middle of climbing up onto the chair as Fire mocked her tone, earning him an unimpressed ‘hmm’ in return. For some reason she wasn’t surprised that he had managed to hang onto his care-free manner despite the circumstances. Or maybe it was his way of coping.

Glancing back at him just in time to catch his eyes roaming, although his interest in her costume seemed innocent enough. She stands fully on the chair, looking down at it herself; the dress and cape were both fashionable and comfortable, compliments of her friend Viola who had helped her prepare for the party. 

“Yes, an ice witch.” A pang of worry tugged at her insides at the thought of Viola, giving her all the more motive to find the murderer to keep her safe. “Your scientist get-up is, um... interesting.” She remarked, her gaze returning to the shelves. A few of the books are misplaced on the top shelf; she reaches up to slide them aside. “I guess it does make you look rather han--”

A gasp cut her off mid-sentence as her hand touched something slimy. Miyu stood frozen for a moment, unable to move her body. Although she had only briefly made contact, if she didn’t know any better, she would have thought it felt like... eyes.

Bringing her hand back down, the blood on her hand all but confirmed her fear. The immediate shock and disgust she felt made her forget where she was, and taking a step back the witch took a tumble off of the chair.

Jean-Benoît, prior to the announcement, had been in the kitchen as a hired hand, polishing the silverware for the evening’s dinner. When he heard a scream enact from down the hall, he replaced the utensils onto the counter and rushed to the scene of the crime–there, lied a corpse.

His pale green eyes widened by the fraction, but otherwise his visage remained unmoved. Death, with his past all considered, barely fazed him anymore. He glanced about the attendees, mostly frightened and shocked, then asked, as many others did: What in the lord’s name is happening here? The situation was explained, and alibis were given. The masses began to dissipate with hesitance, and Jean-Benoît himself retreated to the kitchen, assuming his prior duties, albeit with a chill in his spine.

The physical evidence regarding the scene, Miyu had learned, was far from enough to incriminate any of her fellow guests of the murder. It was time for the interrogations to begin. But who to start with? There were a few suspicious characters that immediately came to mind, but in all of the mystery novels she had read it was always the quiet, unassuming individuals not unlike herself that one should be wary of.

Before long her feet had taken her to the kitchen where the soft clinking of silverware could be heard. Announcing her presence with a deliberate clearing of her throat, she strategically positioned herself with one of the work tables between herself and the butler.

“Please excuse me for interrupting your work.” Miyu began with a hand brought to her face, tapping her finger on her chin thoughtfully. “Oh, the silverware they have here must be pretty fancy...”

“And perfect for scooping eyeballs.” The accusatory tone and word choice were far from subtle as she continued. “Would you agree?”

One Halloween party, one Halloween murder. The screams and the people gathered around, the body right in front of him— Fire had thought it a joke when he saw it. A Halloween spook. He knows how this goes! Wasn’t a game of Who Did It perfect during the day and night of woooOOOoooOoOoOo, creepy creepy?

He waited for the tone to change, for the person to get up; and when they didn’t, complimented in his head the work on the mannequin. Arceus, did it look real! They should be using these in haunted houses more. 

But the mood never shifted, the tension in the crowded hallway peeled away at his disbelief, the reveal of holes where eyes used to be—

The good mood he worked to keep alive disintegrated to barely an ember.

Parties weren’t really Miyu’s thing, but free food certainly was. The party was held at a mansion, too -- a creepy old mansion, but a mansion nonetheless -- which meant fancy free food. How was a hungry traveler supposed to resist that level of temptation? And the party certainly didn’t disappoint.

Miyu was stuffing her face (and pockets) in the ballroom when the evening took a sudden, gruesome turn. With all the guests gathered in the hallway the backpacker’s gaze scanned the expressions of the other party attendees, each more or less with varying degrees of shock and horror. A suspicious few screamed out to her avoid at all cost, but since nearly everyone was a stranger to her she felt she could trust very few other than herself.

And so, after inspecting the body (avoiding the face as much as possible), and the immediate scene around it Miyu had decided to find the murderer -- for the sole purpose of avoiding them and, by extension, being murdered herself. It was a flawless plan, truly, and very logical.

Her search brought her to the nearby library, which may have been a pleasant visit if not for the circumstances. There she found what appeared to be the chair missing from the hallway; and she was examining it as well as the floor and shelves around it when she heard her name called behind her.

“Ah--” her cry of surprise sounded much more like an expression of boredom, although the shock of dread instantly melted away as she turned to see a familiar face, dressed in a very interesting scientist get-up. She tried to hide her relief as she turned her back on him again, her attention returning to the evidence in front of her. “Oh, it’s you.”

Hands raised in a non-threatening manner, Fire approached. Miyu relaxed immediately, a small sigh escaping her lips. While she had read that some murderers used their charismatic natures to attract victims she still couldn’t imagine that Fire was capable of murder of all things. 

“No, I’m trying to discover the murderer.” She replied as if that was the most normal thing in the world to be doing. “What about you? I can’t imagine you’re in the mood to read right now.”

Egads, a natural traveller! In a world with so many of them, but that didn’t make their appearance rare at times. For every thousand trainers you met just local to a city or town or the entire region, then you found the Hiker Bobs and Backpacker Phils. Or Namis, in this case.

Smile springing far more pleasant than his (un!)natural odour, she was speaking the gospel of his beliefs.

“So, you only just got off the road?” Only just got off the road after, say, a few hours, he’s guessing. “If that’s the case, I know some of the better spots around here. Away from most of the grass types in bloom,” in heat, “the moody poison types, and, it’s a great camping spot great for putting up socks to get dry. Wanna know more?”

With a charming salesman tone and hands on his hips, could she turn down such an offer? “It is about half an hours walk,” he admits, “but it’s a fun hours walk.”

Then he stands, waiting for her answer—and Big Punches flings a seed at his head, earning a sulking death glare for his efforts. Breloom ain’t even acting like that wasn’t him.

It was difficult even for someone like Miyu to refuse such an inviting personality. And perhaps along the way she could think of a way to repay his kind assistance. Before she could respond another stinky seed flew through the air, this one hitting the trainer right on the head. Instinctively one of Miyu’s hands covered her nose in an attempt to protect herself from the inevitable odor.

Clearly this was going to be a fun walk, as promised. But it beat falling into a dreamy haze and walking into ponds, so Miyu decided to keep her complaints to herself. 

“I don’t mind walking.” Miyu half-smiled. Considering she spent at least half of her waking hours on the road, she was used to it at the very least. “If it’s not any trouble then I would like to accept your offer.”

She didn’t have much of a choice in the matter, anyway. Without the stranger’s assistance she risked camping in a spot where she was vulnerable to the bewitching effects of the Lilligant flowers once again, and Miyu wasn’t looking forward to taking a dip a second time.

“Since we’re going to be traveling together can I ask for your name?” She had to admit to being a bit curious of the other. She had met many people during her travels, some friendlier than others, but none more eager to offer help than this person. “I’m Miyu.”
