The BFU Boys Are Supernatural Beings
I was sad so I went through Buzzfeed Unsolved episodes and made this big fat list of the evidence of Shane being a whole ass demon and some as to Ryan being a psychic. Also some random bits of conjecture that support the theories.
Note: I didn’t watch every single episode as intensely as possible because, again, I was sad so I might have missed some points. This isn’t 100% comprehensive ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also don’t take this seriously I was really bored.
Shane Madej: Not-So-Stealthy Demon That Just Wants To Protect His Little Buddy
His complete lack of fear regarding the supernatural (easy to see throughout the series when he taunts spirits and demons)
The way he can just “turn off” his fear apparently
Idk maybe he convinced (read: used his demon powers) Brent to give up the position of co-host because he knew his little buddy Ryan would get merked by a demon without his help
the entire Sallie House fiasco (could it be that Sallie didn’t answer his teasing unless it was about Ryan because it was afraid of him?)
What with there being so many accounts of demons in Bobby Mackey’s, it’s weird that they didn’t encounter much activity. Shane probably scared them away to ensure Ryan’s safety given the alleged strength of the demons there
In the Voodoo episode Shane asks the ghosts if they have anything to say to ‘the little guy’, and then Ryan asks if they have anything to say to 'the giant’ and there’s a whimper afterward (the ghost is scared of big ol’ Shane)
the post-mortem of Natalie Wood’s drowning: “I have satanic verses memorized.” (a joke based in truth. Shane is. a demon)
Ryan: “I can’t put my mind into the mind of a criminal-” Shane: “I can”
At the Vulture Mine when the door was opening, Shane stood very still with this weird look on his face as he goaded the children into slamming the door open (they didn’t. smart kids)
Apparently, he’s ghost-proof… (Penitentiary episode)
Shane’s rant in the Goatman’s Bridge is probably that loud and blatantly disrespectful to scare away such a powerful demon
His lil dance is to scare away the Goatman too
And he made Ryan say that he isn’t part of Shane’s “little charade” probably to do as much as possible to keep Goatman away from Ryan
Shane reminded Ryan of the priest and that he shouldn’t try to talk to demons in an effort to keep him safe from Goatman
Shane, on the Goatman’s bridge, after Ryan said he can’t fight: “I got a lot of limbs that are very…” (does Shane have fucking demon tentacles??)
Shane straight up took the bridge from Goatman in a show of power to keep Ryan safe/shit on the Goatman
“Oujia board? I’ve done that before. It’s a blast.” (Shane probably got summoned once.)
Shane and Ryan talking about Goatman in the post-mortem; Ryan says all demons are evil (open your eyes Ryan.) and Shane tries to argue that some of them might be fun demons (Ryan he’s the only thing keeping you alive at this point.)
Post-mortem for Pennhurst: “I think ghosts would want to party with me.” (absolutely not Shane and don’t play dumb you scare the shit out of them)
He really loved the idea of an execution breakfast brought up in the Viaduct Tavern episode. like a lot. he cracked tf up (Shane was probably remembering an execution breakfast he ate like 100 years ago or whatever)
Maybe he hates the spirit box because the spirits are loud af and he can pick out all of the dumbass ghosts yelling about apple taters (and wanting to brutally murder Ryan)
In the Mothman episode when the men in black come up: “Oh I like those guys. Our my old friends.”
“If I were Mothman - and I’m not…” (suspicious af Shane. who’s mistaken you for Mothman before?)
Was seemingly completely unafraid of the threat of coyotes (and/or didn’t know he should pretend to be afraid of coyotes)
It wasn’t demonic but it was supernaturally adorable how Shane danced when they played opera music in the Rolling Hills Asylum
I think Shane always goes first during the solitary bits of the episode to make sure the ghosts know if they hurt Ryan they’ll have to answer to a whole ass demon
To the demons of the Bellaire House when they wouldn’t respond to the seance: “Am I off-putting to you guys?” (yes Shane, good job keeping Ryan alive)
Maybe Shane presents himself as (self-described) 'strange’ and 'off-putting’ to ward off other spirits/demons
He threatened the demon of the Bellaire House before they went to lie down for the night, possibly to threaten it for Ryan’s safety
“Do you believe me now when I say that we’re both demon-proof?” Shane had said in the Bellaire House
Idk maybe he was really respectful to the ghosts of Ohio State Penitentiary because he felt the agony they were in?
He was probably protecting Ryan throughout the entire Moon River Brewing episode
[I skipped the True Crime season right before the most recent Supernatural season in the binge because it’s not really my jam. If there was something within these episodes, I missed it.]
Ryan admitted that Shane is his coping mechanism in the Return to Winchester post-mortem; he’s probably unaware that Shane is actually keeping the bad stuff away through intimidation
Also, Shane definitely yelled Ryan’s name at the top of his lungs in the Winchester House to ward off the spirits from afar
Shane probably made the demon in Mission Solano respond to the flashlights and then threatened it pretty well during his turn being alone (it’s a good rant, I would watch it) to give Ryan and the Boogaras some content (he kinda overshot and made the atmosphere horrific for Ryan)
At least he warned Ryan somewhat by telling him to tread lightly, albeit 'jokingly’
“If my eyes ever turn black, kill me,” Shane had said in the Solano episode, probably trying to see what Ryan’s reaction to his true demonic self would be (i bet he was pleasantly surprised when Ryan said he wouldn’t kill him)
In relation to a point in Ryan’s Psychic List: Shane’s demonic aura probably influences Ryan to be cockier and less afraid; I assume after spending so much time around Shane and drawing comfort from his presence would make his aura incredibly relieving for Ryan
Right after Ryan felt the burning on his arm, Shane started intimidating/threatening the demon in the Hannah House
“Are you scared of the tall man?” -Ryan to the demon of Hannah House (answer: yes they are)
In the Hannah House - Ryan: “I have a vial of holy water, what do you have?” Shane: “Me.”
Ryan Bergara: Psychic/Spiritually Sensitive Little Man
So, there aren’t that many different pieces of evidence of Ryan being sensitive to spiritual activity and it basically boils down to Ryan feeling dizzy/unwell in different supernatural areas buuut…I love the theory so fuck it <3
Obviously, throughout the whole series, we can see that he’s receptive to the environment whether or not you believe it’s supernatural
“You are a fool if you do not feel strange right now.” -Ryan, as he’s first entering the Winchester House
When he felt dizzy/bad in the Whaley House (it was pretty prominent he felt physically/psychologically unwell)
When he was 17 and the finicky Queen Mary ghosts messed with him (when Shane wasn’t there), they were probably attracted by his psychic abilities
Ryan was pretty receptive during the Voodoo episode, as Bloody Mary confirmed he was channeling, also he said he always felt like “something’s been watching [him] in the dark since [he] was a kid.”
He also felt unsettled and weird at the Vulture Mine
I’ve never really heard anything clear from the whispers/words their mics pick up but Ryan is always very sensitive to the noises they record so his spiritual sensitivity probably makes it easier to hear otherworldly speech (ex. when he heard a faint scream at the Goatman’s Bridge)
He felt so nervous on the Goatman’s Bridge that he felt nauseous (this might just be Ryan’s deep fear of demons but, still)
He also often says, “My brain is starting to melt,” to describe his distress in regards to ghostly activity which might be his brain overloading from said ghostly activity
Self-proclaimed ghost antenna which is probably more accurate than he’d like
Felt bad vibes in the Viaduct Tavern
Got bad feeling in the Rolling Hills Asylum where there was a lot of activity on the spirit box
He had an approximation of a conversation with a spirit in the Rolling Hills Asylum when he was alone, hearing and probably sounding clearer to spirits than others (note the spirit only spoke to him when Shane wasn’t around)
Felt like he was being watched in the Moon River Brewing demon basement
Ryan was absolutely terrified in the Mission Solano episode during his turn being alone (after Shane messed with the demon) and felt the room get colder and was significantly more uneasy and visibly frightened than, in my opinion, any other episode
Follow up to Solano: Ryan was probably influenced by the demon’s aura which made him afraid and made him call the demon to him, something which felt far too dangerous for sane Ryan
The Hannah House demon was very responsive to Ryan, not a lot of other people, particularly in a sort-of threatening/mocking way
shane and ryan were supernaturally adorable when they attempted to speak spoke Spanish in the mission solano episode (even though the accents were…uh…)
also this isn’t supernatural at all but when they both started laughing so hard they were crying in the montezuma mansion. my heart did a fat uwu
Ryan has 100% been possessed by Ricky
