~ The Tipping Point ~ ~ With the start of my second year as FCP student fast approaching, I decided to start the reading in order to have it done before we go back. Summers ending now and university is beginning again.. And I want to start this year with a fresh mind which is already focused on work, and not having to spend the first few lectures trying to concentrate.
A moment to reflect..
Moving from sixth form to university for me was a fairly large step in terms of the education aspect. And I know I'm not the only one to say that first year was a little challenging in some areas as it was not something I had experienced before and so didn't know what exactly to expect and what was expected of me. But after this year I feel I have really learnt what I need to do to improve and to boost my grades to the highest possible for my ability. So for next year I need to.. STOP: procrastinating about doing work STOP: being nervous about my ideas STOP: procrastinating about blogging START: being more confident in my work START: spending more time in the library START: finding the hidden treasures of notts START: completing more of the reading CONTINUE: working on my sketchbooks CONTINUE: playing with Adobe CS6 CONTINUE: going to exhibitions I am fairly pleased with the way that I completed first year, however I know that there are definitely strengths and weaknesses of the way that I work. And i know that there are definitely ways I could improve my work ethic next year. I cannot wait to start second year and get stuck into the work and the creativity that I have been lacking over this summer spend slaving in the hospitality trade.

Alexander McQueen! When I came home for summer, mum had bought us two tickets to the weird but wonderful Alexander McQueen exhibition which had graced us with its presence at London's popular V&A museum. The exhibition was as I say, weird but wonderful. It felt exhilarating to be thrown into nine rooms of McQueen's life. As this was his life, fashion wasn't just a hobby.. It was his lifestyle, his fascination, and his feelings all put into different collections. Some of the collections were just as crazy as he was, the 'Highland Rape' collection stood out to me... He loved the correlation between femininity and the brutal nature of reality which is why he thrust this theme upon his collection through the use of human hair and various tares and rips in his garments. The cabinet of curiosities has to be my favourite room. Upon walking into this glistening black room I was amazed. It felt like I was walking into a never-ending room of possibilities and inspiration. There were garments dotted around the rooms.. High up the walls. With screens presenting old catwalk shows, and speakers with quotes. This felt like the most "normal" room for me, it contained the more minimalist garments and the more "wearable" garments. For me, I feel like this exhibition was a huge success in not only presenting the collections in an interesting way to the public, but also successful in letting the public into McQueen's life and desires.
Work experience!!
The last few weeks I've spent stressing over my lack of work experience in fashion!! And it's a must to have some! In fashion, it's all about networking.. It's all about who you know not what you know.. Which is ironic seeing as we are STUDYING a course in fashion!! I've emailed everywhere, but work experience at the moment is far and few between.. Unfortunately! BUT ... Only yesterday my best friend from back here in Kent told me something very exciting. Whilst enjoying a cold cider and getting really rather burnt in a countryside pub garden.. She told me that on her recent travels a good friend of hers she met, her dad is with someone high up in Burberry!! PERFECT!!! Now time to send some emails and get that name on my CV!
A little reflection..
So now that the term is over, uni is finished .. And everyone has moved out its time for a reflection upon what has actually been an amazing year. I couldn't of met better people, done a better course, or had more fun that I have done! The course has been amazing, much better than I expected. The work load has been fairly easy and yet I've still felt myself wanting to work more and more. When we are given tasks, I never feel bored or that I don't want to do it.. I actually like doing it. I like the creative side and I love that I can out my own twist on what is a really universal piece of work. There have been different aspects of the course that I've enjoyed more than others, yet I now feel that I progressed in my weaknesses to improve. For example.. Photoshop!! I hated photoshop at the beginning of the year, but now I've spent ages on it, trying out different things and tools.. Ive really come round to like it. The workbook has been another one of the aspects that I've really enjoyed! I never took up the opportunity of doing a physically creative subject at a-level and so being here and able to put all my work and ideas into a physical work book has been really fun.. Thinking about the layout, colours, materials.

CREATIVE NETWORKS ?
its OVER! First year is actually over now. Work is finished, printed.. done. This term has consisted of laughs, giggles, tears and anger and I’m glad to say we’ve finished it. There’s been ups and downs of working within a group and I’ve learnt so much from it. I have never been one for group work, I like doing things myself and I like doing what I know. It’s difficult working in a group because there are so many different opinions, tastes and views that need to be considered and it’s so difficult to come to a final conclusion that suits everyone!! But I’ve learnt how to relax in a group scenario and chill out to let people work in their own way.
This module has been a lot easier than I thought it would be, I’ve not been looking forward to studying the more business aspect of it (despite the fact that IS our course), because I’ve never studied business before.. but it’s been a lot easier than I ever thought it would be because we’ve done it related to fashion/fragrance. I’ve learnt a fair bit about the different elements of a brand and creating one myself.
I’ve definitely learnt a lot of different skills and mind sets which hopefully will allow me to work better next year, particularly in the business aspects of the course.
Modelling for Georgie's final garment.
This week I was asked to model for my friend Georgie's final garment for her first year fashion design course, also at NTU. I was nervous and excited at the same time.. Especially as the photoshoot was going to be in the gardens of Wollaton Hall in Nottingham. The location seemed perfect.. Georgie needed a basic background in order to emphasise the beauty of her garment which consisted of a trouser and jacket combination. The garment had elements of butterfly patterns on the back of the jacket and therefore a nature setting was ideal.

ADVERT! This is our group's promo video, we would plan to show this on social media such as Instagram and Facebook pages. After days of listening to the same song on loop and watching the same clips.. I'm so proud with our finished product!
That's it, it's finished! After a long journey, our fragrance group work is finished. We've had happy times and strops but I have to say I'm so proud of our group, we've worked to our absolute best ability and I'm so happy with the outcome.. We really did produce some good work. Our presentation yesterday went so well, we were the last ones out of 5 and went at 4pm.. So everyone was tired and the afternoon had been long.. But somehow we still managed to make people laugh and grab their attention with our presentation. Which the lecturers actually picked up on, which was great. We were all so nervous, scared, frightened.. Whatever word you want to use.. We were all panicking as we walked up to the front to present our final presentation. Yet, we all managed to stand up and present what we had to say with enthusiasm and strength which I'm proud of. I'll be the first to admit I'm a truly awful public speaker.. But I was happy with our presentation skills. And standing up there and watching our adverts on the screen was so exciting I couldn't believe it.

ADVERTS So last week was huge! We had so many plans about our different advert inspirations and thoughts, and after sitting down and drawing some sketches.. It was narrowed down to a few main images which we thought would really portray our brand image of sensuality, seduction and the correlation between taste and smell. We also wanted to be able to connect with our target consumer; of a young, female student who is sexually active but spends her time in cocktail bars with her friends. So.. Inevitably, why not use a model of similar attributes? so thankfully, my friend Ellie AGREED to do our shoot!!! Now.. A boy? Who could we use? We needed someone who was attractive, had a good upper body, and was confident! Max? Thankfully he said yes! And I'm so thankful to our models!! After we arrived, we had already spend a good hour together since 9 with Georgie doing Ellie's makeup. So we already had a positive attitude towards the shoot and I was so excited!! Although we had a minor hiccup where the camera flash wouldn't work correctly (not our fault!!).. We were given an extra 20 minutes to finish our shoot and we managed to complete all of our pre-arranged images.. Plus more!! Overall, I'm so proud of our group for what we did and how we achieved it!! We really did ourselves proud. And I can't wait to finish editing the final product!
