nr: "there was no relationship. it's proper war, it's like war. don't talk, no relationship."

"but you were great buddies growing up?"

nr: "yes, but when you're fighting for a world championship, you will always compromise the friendship for the world championship, unfortunately. it's such a big dream. if you had to choose, you choose the wdc.

friendship...i mean it's not like we were best friends at the time. we were best friends as little kids, but then we drifted apart. we got on well, but not best friends anymore. between getting on well or winning the championship, you chose the championship.

nr: "we're neutral now. craziest thing is that we were neighbours in the same building, but i've moved out since. we saw each other a bit, we're just neutral."

nr: "uh, no. we took a personal moment after i made my decision (to retire), but i think we have very different lives and interests, so we wouldn't be best friends anyway. so it's just neutral, it's fine. bad things happened anyway, so you can't really fix that easily. who's going to say sorry first?

i'm amazed that he's still driving. i've been out for 10 years and he's still going. it's incredible how he has managed to build his life with such stability as well, to be able to have such longevity. no scandals, performing at such a high level. it's not only about being a great racecar driver, you need to build a life around that. no scandals, there's so many examples, and lewis has done an incredible job to perform at such a high level for so long.

nr: "this was year 1 (2006), hockenheim, i messed up the start and was last. running last, turn 10, first lap, i spun out on my own and crashed. that was pretty bad. so then, 6 o'clock, i'm in my car driving home and get a phone call from sam michael, who is deputy boss. he says 'nico, you were useless to us this weekend.' ahhh shit, come on guys.

instead of like 'hey uhhh what can we do improve, don't worry, these things happen' and you know, 'you learn from every mistake and grow. it's normal, you just need to get through this and you've done this and this so well.' no, you were useless to us! that's why i'm saying (williams) was a team full of army generals."

nr: "no i still can't smile about it 😐 just kidding! 😁 i can smile about anything that happened in my career, because the ending was so beautiful. whatever was thrown at me, i don't care. but in that moment, horrible! i'm destroyed. he calls me on purpose to tell me.

at patrick head (williams cofounder and technical director), they had their greatest success with drivers like my dad or drivers like alan jones (1980 wdc). my dad had a fire in his racecar in brazil (1983), jumped out the car, and patrick head runs towards him and screams 'GET THE HELL BACK INTO THAT CAR' and my dad says 'MY MUSTACHE IS ON FIRE' and they have a shouting match! my dad gets back in and finishes second. that's how they grew up in the sport with these macho drivers - alan jones was the same, you had to shout and probably threaten to punch him to get him fired up and perform well. so that's just how (williams) were."
