Should I give the vampire that has been stalking me for the past month a chance? He has murdered some people but he's kinda hot especially covered in blood. He says I look like someone he knew once, which I don't know about but he did get me flowers.

Defanging vampires and making fairies less of tricksters

I have some thoughts about supernatural romance/romantasy swirling in my head recently because of discussions I have read with in acotar and in the vampire diaries spaces. I don't know if I am going to be able to properly articulate my thoughts on this because I feel like it doesn't make sense but I will try my best.

What I have noticed in supernatural romance in recent years that features supernatural creatures and we get to date them is that we have a tendency to moralize everyone's actions. And what I mean by this is, the narrative itself, not just the people consuming the story, keep adding human morality to characters that are monsters. Fairies, vampires, werewolves, ect. were villains and monsters since the very beginning they were conceived. It's only recently that we can date them.

Because we want to date them now, we want them to be good. So now vampires who are good only drink from animals and never kill. But if they have killed then they are remorseful and sad over it. Take the vampires from tvd. Damon is considered the "bad boy" and the "bad brother" because he kills people (he does do some other horrible things but for the sake of argument I'm focusing on murder) meanwhile, Stefan is the "good brother" because he drinks from animals. But in reality Stefan is also not that great and actually most of the cast has done something that is illegal. Which they should because they are vampires, they are creatures who historically are villains. But because we want to date them and not feel guilt we have to make vegetarian vampires. Then people shame others for finding Damon, Klaus, and other "bad" vampires hot. And shaming them for shipping characters with them.

With Acotar I don't really want to call them fae because they feel more like elves or humans with magic and big dicks. Amarantha is really the only one who feels like fae and the stuff in the first book with the Spring Court felt faeish. As someone who has read myth accurate fae I was expecting more of that in the series from both heroes and villains. But no. We have to moralize the fae and make the IC the greatest feminists to ever feminist. Rhysand during book 1 was captivating and how fae should be written. But book 2 and his dumb monologue ruined that. Because we had to explain his actions so that he was good and we didn't have to feel guilty over liking him

In comparison, a book series called the Bloodwine sequence which was primarily published during the 90s embraces the darkness that comes with dating vampires. This series is very more in the vibes of Anne Rice. The main villain of this series is really only a villain because he was a monk turned vampire that wants to control all the vampires. He wants all the vampires to be under his control almost like a cult. He also wants to make a perfect race of vampires, very parallel to hitler and this series does take place during the 1920s. (it's been a bit since I read the series) All the vampires in the series besides killing people, have done some questionable things, including our male love interest and female protagonist. Why? Because they are vampires. The narrative also doesn't try to make them out to be virtuous, amazing, vampires. We follow for a significant amount of pages a vampire named Sebastian, who loves to fuck with humans. He has this thing where he will seduce a human woman and slowly drain the life from her. And he ends up helping the main characters at some point. Guess what I find him hot and part of it is his sadistic tendencies. And I don't feel guilty about it.

I am really starting not to like this way of writing supernatural characters because you're ignoring thousands of years of myth and legend because you are a scared to admit that you like monsters but at the same time you don't want to feel guilty over finding FICTIONAL CHARACTERS who are bad hot. You want to have your cake and eat it too.

Ladies isn't it normal to want to have a protective man whose a little possessive? Like if you are separated for a long time due to circumstances out your control he should be thinking of you the whole time. Before you got together he should have been seeing you from afar and pining for you. If he has a curse or can shape shift, perfect. And if he's a murderer or a ruthless general, all the better. If he decides to kiss you or make love while still covered in blood and gore, hot. If he climbs in through your window, he's a keeper.

Kataang shippers: Zutara shippers only think Katara should be with Zuko because they think he's hotter than Aang.

Me: That is an odd thing to say. I know that most people watched this show as kids, but I first watched it as an adult because I didn't grow up with cable. I ship those two as an adult because I think they fit well together and the scenes they share have great emotional depth to them. I certainly don't feel comfortable saying a character who is 16 is hot while I first saw them in a show as an adult. And for that matter it's weird to be comparing a 12 year old and 16 year old in appearance because there's a lot of physical changes that happen between those ages.

Kataang shippers: Zutara shippers are going to switch sides now that we get to see adult Aang in the new movie and he has abbs now.

Me: Nah, have you seen those luscious locks on Zuko? The fact that his shirt keeps getting ripped, his muscular arms, his beautiful face... 🥵🤤

Also does anyone else find the spirit world scene that got leaked odd in the sense that they just HAD to point out Zuko and Katara aren't a couple? Reeks of insecurity from bryke about their own ship.

Another complaint against Tamlin i have never understood is saying that the red flags were there at the beginning of him being controlling.

The reason why I'm confused about this is because in the first book, Feyre is human. She knows nothing of Prythian, and she knows to an extent the fae are dangerous but doesn't seem to understand how they are dangerous. When going on patrol with Lucien he tells her she needs to be silent and not move bc of the bogg. She didn't know about the bogg. So Tamlin is telling her not to do certain things for her protection. He tells her not leave her room on Calamai bc a fairy orgy with magic viagra is definitely unsafe for a human.

Then acomaf she just turned fae and has powers she doesn't understand. She's also very traumatized and tries to run head first into a squirmish where Tamlin really can't afford to make sure she's safe.

If this story was taking place in our world, yeah, he would be controlling but this taking place in Prythian where there are Fae who are vicious to humans. Given that context is Tamlin really that controlling?

so my friend and I ended up talking about Cassian and how we envision him. She has not read the ACOTAR books but I have ranted enough about them to her that she knows enough. We decided that Cassian can really grow a beard and he switches between clean shaven and having some scruff. Rhysand can't grow a beard, his beard is patchy, so he stays clean shaven but pretends that he can, but he just doesn't like having a beard. And Azriel can grow a beard but chooses not to.
