I was thinking of a pride art challenge people could do with their OCs, because I thought it'd be cute! A queer/trans artist with their creations.
but then I realised that same challenge would be infinitely more funny with folks who have atypical or horror OCs
Job hunting in a hostile environment. ✨
You’re not depressed. You just need $250,000 in your bank account.
Reblog to materialize $250,000 in prev's bank account
you are 16. you are talking with a gay man in his 50s or 60s, a friend, huge and gentle with a scarf and short fluffy curls of gray hair, who has directed you in two plays staged in your mid-size artsy town. (he has not yet asked you to be in his production of The Laramie Project which will change your life. this conversation will also change your life.)
he is talking about theatre. he is talking about theatre when he was younger. he says, "of course, it was AIDS then." in the pause, you ask him. clumsy and quiet and 16 and "straight," you ask him. what was it like.
he takes a moment in which his face is not like a person's face. "there was a time," he says, "i'm not sure how long, years. when i went to a funeral every weekend." he tells you about two funerals in a day, and choosing between friends when you couldn't make it to both. he does not look at you, he looks at them. his wet grey gaze is so clear that you start to see ghosts. it will be years before you understand why it feels like your grief too. why the ghosts call you family.
wishing you all a reflective World AIDS Day.
conclave the book is like so specifically written too like ... its so crazy. bellini's line about "families having 10 children because mama and papa didn't know any better" & "standing for everything tedesco does not" is like only a few pages apart from the reveal of tedesco's backstory being that he's the youngest of 12 kids and grew up destitutely poor from that (& still eats like he's terrified someone might steal his food). like ohh... tedesco is a product of his environment and the paradigm of the traditional values failing people & still trying to force those values on people despite knowing the firsthand experience of the way it sucks. crab in a bucket style.
Gonna chill out the rest of May and then change my entire life in June. Possibly July if that doesn't work out. Certainly no later than September or October.
Btw, that idea that privilege makes you morally evil and suffering makes you morally good is just repackaged versions of the Christian concepts of the evils of luxury and the holiness of martyrdom. Hope this helps!
the thing about labubus to me is that i genuinely do think the design is appealing and i love things that are uglycute and if they were lowkey or more niche i think it would be super cute to have one. but the fact that they are mainstream and trendy sucks all of the fun out of it for me
this isn’t just “durr hburr mainstream thing Bad i need to feel Cool” it’s just that like. collecting ANYTHING popular is such a slog to me. i love pokemon cards and i love collecting them and i love playing the tcg and i’ve been into pokemon cards for like 15 years and i think they are fun. but the recent wave of “buy them, invest in them, flip them, resell them, snatch up a whole store’s stock” is soooo exhausting. because you literally cannot avoid it as part of the hobby. it is an awful time to try to get into pokemon cards or tcg because you cannot physically get your hands on new cards. and the ppl paying hundreds to thousands of dollars to buy up new releases and restocks are not into pokemon cards for the cards - they want the monetary or social capital that comes with either (a) having extremely rare graded chase cards or (b) ‘investing’ in unopened packs that will purposefully sit in storage for the next fifteen years until they balloon in value. it’s not about pokemon it’s about profit. it’s not about the thing it’s about how to harness the idea of the thing for personal gain. you can’t engage with the Idea without necessarily inviting the Meta Idea.
going back to labubus. no one is actually into labubus. very few people care about the design or the character or the artist or any of it. labubus aren’t cool but HAVING a labubu is cool. it doesn’t matter what your opinion is about labubus but everyone has an opinion about having an opinion on labubus. if you like them you’re vapid and following a craze and trying to fit in. if you hate them you’re trying too hard to be contrarian and you hate fun and you’re being silly because it’s just a toy. you cannot win except by purchasing the thing that everybody can’t stop talking about talking about. and then you get articles like this:
and it’s like ohhh. okay. it was never about a hobby or the doll or even about the trend. it has always been about money. ok got it. thank you.
i’m so tired.
hard cider was invented when someone decided to make beer that tastes good instead of bad
stupid fuckin post. People have been making beer since before they even knew how to write and you think that they don’t like the way it tastes?
damn all that time and it still tastes really bad. huge L tbh
the worse climate disaster gets, the more you’ll see closet eugenicists start to advocate for letting people die. you need to be prepared to combat the ideology wherever you see it, because it’s only going to get worse and worse Read everything having to do with climate disaster critically. If the central argument underlying what’s being said is that the death of disabled and/or racialized people is inevitable, natural, or desirable– that’s a fascist.
they might be appear to be a garden variety republican or liberal or even a leftist at first, but know that if that argument is being made, their underlying ideology is one of supremacism, and given additional climate stress, they will become more blatant about it.
it’s been 6 years since I wrote this post, and as predicted, the eugenics movement has had enormous success since then.
since writing this, millions of people have died preventable deaths from a pandemic that much of the global north pretends doesn’t exist anymore.
access to healthcare is being revoked from increasing percentages of the population– removal of testing, accelerating vaccine prices, artificial shortages of medications (blamed on PWUD or disabled people’s “over-reliance”), insurance companies automating denials, increasing criminalization of health care concerning “sexed” traits and reproductive capacity (e.g. abortion, HRT, puberty blockers).
many places are beginning to criminalize wearing masks. doctors have even stopped wearing them. activists have even stopped wearing them.
anti-fatness is at its most blatant in years and most people have framed this acceleration of oppression as nothing more than a fashion cycle (“thin is back in!”), ableist slurs that had temporarily been deemed inappropriate by abled people are returning to common vernacular.
every climate disaster is quickly framed as people “deserving” it. every new pop science article that goes viral claims to have found the “cause” of the supposed phenomenon of the anonymous masses “degrading” their intelligence/IQ/cognitive abilities, and the solution presented is always Hard Work.
I need you all to pay attention to how this works.
since the yearly "certain medications can cause heat intolerance" PSAs are out in full force, let us fondly remember last year when I was at Pennsic (big ass medieval recreation event) and our group was tearing down our giant tent lodge we use for our kitchen and dining hall. and there's a part at the very end where the roof is sort of on the ground, but still tented on a pole in the middle. and someone has to go under there to unhook the roof from the pole. but it's hot as fuck in that part since it's been baking in the sun for two weeks, so it's called "Satan's asshole". which resulted in somebody VERY solemnly telling me, "going into Satan's asshole is NOT a job for somebody on SSRIs"
Sitting here thinking about Janusz being willing to step in front of a gun for Vincent because I do think they could become close friends during his papacy, and also I think he'd rather die than outlive another pope and friend
Though generally peaceful, unicorns do have their disagreements. These are almost always settled using teeth and hooves, rather than horns - and always in a suitably dramatic location.
