Retromops!

A member of Züchterkreis für den Retromops- the breeding community for the retro pug in Germany- just shared some really amazing pug pictures. Retromops, or old style pugs, are an attempt to make pugs better. Retromops don’t have the same breathing problems; while they still are a brachycephalic breed, they actually DO have some muzzle, as well as better nostrils. (I’d personally like to see more nostril, but they’re still a work in progress.) 

Hallmarks of the retropug include nostrils that can actually be used for breathing…

eyes that don’t pop out of the head…

enough muzzle to actually function… 

and tails that aren’t a health hazard like screw tails are. In addition, retromops are tested for the gene that causes Pug Dog Encephalitis; only dogs without the gene are bred (so no carriers). But the most amazing thing to me? Seeing one of these dogs in action.

Honestly that’s why games with creators like toby fox, kojima, Hideki kamiya, etc are so good

They’re usually just honest creations rather than what “sells” best

They’re not perfect, there’s issues of course, but the heart of it all will always just be an earnest and honest experience

They’re something that you can tell someone made because they felt it was cool, they felt it was important

It’s not like, say, anything EA puts out where it’s all stuff we’re being told should be enjoyable, stuff we’re accused of being wrong for not enjoying, stuff they’re trying to sell

But you look at shit like Big Boss believing in Santa, being afraid of vampires, Sans loving puns, Asgore and Asriel both using howdy as a greeting

And even if you don’t like it, it’s alright, it’s not being specifically designed to appeal to everyone it’s just what someone wanted to put out into the world

It’s sad how much of what is taught in school is useless to over 99% of the population.

There are literally math concepts taught in high school and middle school that are only used in extremely specialized fields or that are even so outdated they aren’t used anymore!

I took calculus my senior year of high school, and I really liked the way our teacher framed this on the first day of class.

He asked somebody to raise their hand and ask him when we would use calculus in our everyday life. So one student rose their hand and asked, “When are we going to use this in our everyday life?”

“NEVER!!” the teacher exclaimed. “You will never use calculus in your normal, everyday life. In fact, very few of you will use it in your professional careers either.” Then he paused. “So would you like to know why should care?”

Several us nodded.

He picked out one of the varsity football players in the class. “You practice football a lot during the week, right Tim?” asked the teacher.

“Yeah,” replied Tim. “Almost every day.”

“Do you and your teammates ever lift weights during practice?”

“Yeah. Tuesdays and Thursdays we spend a lot of practice in the weight room.”

“But why?” asked the teacher. “Is there ever going to be a play your coach tells you use during a game that requires you to bench press the other team?”

“No, of course not.”

“Then why lift weights?”

“Because it makes us stronger,” said Tim.

“Bingo!!” said the teacher. “It’s the same thing with calculus. You’re not here because you’re going to use calculus in your everyday life. You’re here because calculus is weightlifting for your brain.”

And I’ve never forgotten that.

When it’s taught right, learning math teaches you logic and how to organize your brain, how to take a problem one step at a time and make sure every step can bear weight before you move to the next one.  Most adults don’t need to know integrals, but goddamn if I don’t wish everyone making arguments on the internet understood geometric proofs.

Scientific concepts broaden our understanding of how the world is put together, which does not mean that most adults ever really understand how light is refracted through a lens or why spinning copper wire creates electricity–and they don’t need to.  But science classes in general are meant to teach the scientific method: how to make observations and use them to draw conclusions, how to test those conclusions, how to be wrong and grow stronger from it.

History isn’t about dates and names of battles, it’s about people, patterns, things we’ve tried before and ought to learn from.  It’s about how everything is linked, how changing one circumstance can lead to changes in fifty others, cascading infinitely.  Literature is about critical thinking, pattern recognition, learning to listen to what somebody is saying and decide what it means to you, how you feel about it, and what you want to do with it.

Some facts matter: every adult should know how to read a graph, how global warming works, some of the basic themes and symbols that crop up in every piece of fiction.  But ultimately, content is less important later in life than context.

The good thing is, students who learn the content are likely to pick up at least some of the context, some of the patterns of thinking, even if they don’t realize it.  (The unfortunate thing is how the current educational system prioritizes content so much that a lot of students, and a lot of adults, don’t see the point in learning either, and teachers are overworked and held to standardize test grading scales such that it’s hard for them to emphasize patterns of thinking over rote memorization, etc etc etc, but that is a whole different discussion.)

If any of my European friends have wondered what I meant when I said American’s don’t have a single unified culture, I’m talking about this:

It’s not as extensive as Europe due to shared history, less time, and a (mostly) shared language, but Americans are really, really spread out and have a wide variety of “American cultures“ that compliment, contrast, and conflict with each other.

And also why a lot of us advocate for state’s rights and are suspicious of the federal government. Beyond Americans just generally being entrenched in individualism, a lot of us dislike it when federal lawmakers (especially those from larger/more powerful states than ours) tell us what we ‘actually’ need without really understanding the conditions and culture we live in.

It’s also why you’ll see a lot of Americans taking the piss with each other over state differences.

Adding Alaska would be adding an area from roughly the southwest tip of the Texas silhouette straight through the middle of Germany.

Not to mention that Alaska might as well be a different planet, environment-wise, from the rest of America. They’ve actually only got one city, Anchorage, in the entirety of Alaska. Everything beyond that is technically a large town or, in most cases, a village or a hamlet. The average Alaskan is far more likely than other Americans to be surrounded by wilderness, transport is often harder than on the mainland because of the geography and weather, Alaska even has an altered day-night cycle in some places because it’s just that close to the Arctic.

True shit. I’m in southern California and the two big rivers here in town spend 6-8 months dry. Literally nothing in them but maybe some mud and a tiny crick down the center of this huge ass dry river bed.

Something I think is often forgotten as well is the fact that, on a global scale, the United states is the third most populated country in the world.

The first 2 countries are China and India.

Like… I don’t see how people can easily gloss over that fact when saying “This works in (this country), so it can work in America!”.

Here, some statistics.

So, aside from the US population being 325.7 million in 2017 (it is much more at this point), we can see that the UK has a population of only 66.02 in the same year.

If you removed 66.02 people from the United States and put them in the UK, the US would still have more people.

And looking at Australia

It is even less than the UK.

The US is not diverse just due to size, but also due to the sheer number of people here.

Where as in Europe, where you can accidently drive to another country in a few hours, a few hours in America can maybe get you to another state, if you already live close enough to it.

America is way to diverse and way to big to easily implement huge changes, which is something I don’t think even people who live here realize.

Facebook knowingly duped game-playing kids and their parents out of money

Unsealed internal documents show the company orchestrated a multi-year effort that duped children and their parents out of money.

Facebook encouraged game developers to let children spend money without their parents’ permission – something the social media giant called “friendly fraud” – in an effort to maximize revenues, according to a document detailing the company’s game strategy.

Sometimes the children did not even know they were spending money, according to another internal Facebook report. Facebook employees knew this. Their own reports showed underage users did not realize their parents’ credit cards were connected to their Facebook accounts and they were spending real money in the games, according to the unsealed documents.

For years, the company ignored warnings from its own employees that it was bamboozling children.

A team of Facebook employees even developed a method that would have reduced the problem of children being hoodwinked into spending money, but the company did not implement it, and instead told game developers that the social media giant was focused on maximizing revenues.

When parents found out how much their children had spent – one 15-year-old racked up $6,500 in charges in about two weeks playing games on Facebook – the company denied requests for refunds. Facebook employees referred to these children as “whales” – a term borrowed from the casino industry to describe profligate spenders.
