This is an open letter to Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, Margot Robbie and Warner Bros. I donât know what you would actually call this, a wish, a dream, a hope, a petition perhaps? And that is to have @twistedtwinsproductions Jen and Sylvia Soska direct and produce the upcoming untitled Harley Quinn movie. Iâm aware that Margot Robbie is currently looking for female directors for this untitled project and who better to do it than TWO Canadian twin directors, producers, writers, actresses, all around wonderful and talented entrepreneurs.
To be honest, these two can do anything they put their brilliant minds to. You can see it in their work. They are determined and incredibly hardworking ladies, they are the real deal, so genuine, warm-hearted and kind. And to have these women be part of creating something something so fierce and empowering to us women, wold be incredible beyond any words I could possibly jot down on paper. But somehow I will now try to explain how much this project and character means to me and so many others out there.
Harley Quinn may be known as a whole lot ditzy and a bit deranged, but what can never be forgotten is that she is a very intelligent woman! Before she was Harley Q, she was Harleen Frances Quinzel.
She was someone who was so in love, with a man who treated her so badly, and her obsession was what eventually drove her to go mad.
It was a one-sided love, it was an insanely abusive relationship, both physically and mentally.
And itâs not that we need the backstory, because we donât, everyone is well aware of what happened to Harley, what was done to her by the Joker.
And weâve experienced that in Batman: The Animated Series, the various comics and even in the Suicide Squad movie. Both in the scenes that made the cut, as well as the ones that did not, yet people still call it ârelationship goalsâ for reasons I canât even begin to wrap my head around.
Personally I love her, I even identify with her, to a certain point. Mostly when it comes to the verbal abuse and having their partner constantly put you down and youâre just so obsessed with this person that youâd rather let them do this to you, than to have to let go and realize that youâre worth so much more. Because in your head, theyâre your entire world and your life revolves around them. Losing them would be like losing a part of yourself. Youâre like an abused dog, whoâs being kicked while youâre already down, yet you keep coming back for more.
Harley means so much to me, for various reasons, like her I was in an abusive relationship and was oblivious to what was going on right in front of me. I couldnât see what everyone else saw. I was verbally and emotionally abused and it completely drained me, it even managed to change me as a person.Â
I connect with Miss Quinn and I think of myself as a very complex and mysterious being, in the best kind of ways.
Harley is such an important character and people should know her story and how she managed to turn her life around for the better. Always kicking ass and taking names. She continues to let us know that thereâs hope for everyone out there.
Now that she has finally been featured in a full length film on the big screen, the crowd is going wild and I keep seeing Harleyâs, both girls and boys, young and old, on all of my travels, from America all the way to Cambodia and back to Sweden. Theyâre all over the place and it makes me smile that people are opening up their eyes to her and that theyâre telling their children about her. Especially their daughters.
With her own HQ The New 52, Gotham City Sirens, Bombshells, Gang of Harleys, Little Black Book, as well as the new DC Rebirth series of both Harley and Suicide Squad, there is so much to explore, there are so many directions to choose from.
A Harley spin-off can literally go from jolly happy to pitch black, dark seriousness in a matter of seconds! As it should, because letâs face it, itâs not always about puppies, sunshine and rainbows.Â
Some may say you can read her like an open book. I would say on the contrary, sheâs a woman with a lot of depth, that may carry her heart on her sleeve, but read her, you can not. She is of strong character. I believe she has always been of strong character. Sure sheâs at times portrayed as being weak, but thatâs about it, mainly because weakness is not in her nature.
She has grown a lot as a character. A character Iâm beyond glad they kept around. She has become a household name, a role-model and while yes people should look up to this strong female villain turned (depending on the day) heroine, they also need to remember what it took for her to get to where sheâs at now. How hard she worked, how the people around her helped her forget and eventually let go and move on.
We need for the ones who bring Harley to the big screen for the second time, to be familiar with her, to know her story, to be aware of where she came from, what sheâs been through and where sheâs going.
I believe that the Soskaâs have the ability, the talent, the drive and the inevitable love for horror and comics and enough knowledge about this character, to be able to bring this story to life. And if you would only look at what theyâve done so far, you would see what theyâre capable of. Their work include Dead Hooker In A Trunk, American Mary, See No Evil 2, ABCâs of Death 2 (T is for Torture Porn), Vandetta and recently the very cleverly amusing yet thrilling game show, Hellevator. Itâs such a mix of everything  you could possibly want and need and itâs perfect for DC comics.
Their work is so diverse and versatile, youâll get the horror with the extreme dark gritty scenes, the comedy with all the witty banter and puns, the action with gun shooting, mallet wielding, bat swinging, rooftop jumping, gymnastics and acrobatic expertise, espresso drinking, sweet, funny and utterly lovable Harley Quinn.
And hey, there might possibly even be a bit of romance, seeing how she has so much love to give.
This could be a great opportunity to bring in Pamela Isley.
Since it has in fact been confirmed that Harley in fact is a queer character (in the comics yes but that shouldnât have to change) even if thereâs only a friendship between the two of them, that would be amazing, relevant and important to portray on the big screen. Itâs important to explore their friendship/relationship and make people see a different side, the emotional side if this tough girl who puts on this front instead of showing her true emotions.
I really like Suicide Squad, I was basically counting down the days after the trailer was released at SDCC and I was truly amazed by Margotâs performance as Harley Quinn, she was the right and absolute perfect choice, she brought her to life in such an exquisite and beautiful way, Iâm forever grateful and thankful and Iâd like to take the opportunity to say that Iâm so so very proud of her and what she accomplished to do with such a lovable and important character.
I know that a lot of people may be up for discussion to direct this and Iâm sure that a lot of people are capable of doing  just that, but I feel like the twins would be perfect for the job and they would definitely do it justice with both characters and storyline and be able to combine everything into one neatly more than well put together film. They like films with outcasts, because normal people scare them and outcasts outnumber the normal people and Harley is one of the outcasts.
Please take this into consideration when looking for the right people to join this project. The Soskaâs put their heart and soul into everything they choose to be a part of and you can tell. Theyâve said that when they come up with a concept they shoot idea back and forth, half assed ideas, full assed ones and if they donât immediately like something, theyâll shoot it the fuck down. If they canât get excited from the first idea of it, it wonât work for the two of them. They need to be passionate about it, as we all should be about something that we love, because chances are weâre going to be talking about it for the rest of our lives.
Jen and Sylvia reminded me of something that Howard Hawks once said: A movie is three good scenes and no bad scenes.
They will make it original, they will make it their own, they will make something the fans both want and need.
And here is why: They are the most loving and encouraging human beings I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. To find light in someone like I did with them, not only are4 they my catalyst for my fire, my self worth, they love me and they want to see me succeed. Which only proves that female friendships and support are so fucking beautiful!
They are the sole purpose of why I will never stop creating, contributing and collaborating with other like-minded people.
They speak so highly of people they admire, you can see the passion in their eyes and itâs the most beautiful think we as humans can share with each other. Jen and Sylvia Soska are all around great and amazing people, but most importantly they are extraordinary filmmakers, and that is rare nowadays.
Just as much as people have opened their eyes to Harley, I want the, to open their eyes to the Soska sisters. I feel like they are still underrated and they are those type pf people who never stop, they donât let the haters get to them, because letâs face it, theyâre above it and also, fuck the haters.
They bring so much joy to others, they remind us how important it is to be kind to one another.
There you have it, I tried to sum it up.
This could be passed on and shared, by all means, spread the word and love of Harley Quinn and the Soska sisters.
Thank you for listening and for taking the time to read this, my love letter to a character who wasnât supposed to last for more than one episode.Â
