Normally Shane doesn't meet Ilya's eyes during their face-offs.

But in the last one he not only catches his eye but he *smiles* and Ilya fucking *melts*.

Ilya knows by this point eye contact does not come naturally to Shane so seeing him actively seek it out and seem so comfortable and relaxed probably made Ilya feel all warm and fuzzy.

Synopsis for those interested:

Beginning in 1955 Chicago, Bread & Bone is a character-driven 1960s AU that follows the earliest threads of connection between two children, Carmen and Sydney, growing up on the margins of belonging.

As one navigates a family shaped by intensity, tradition, loudness, and unspoken rules, and the other adjusts to life after profound loss, their worlds begin to overlap through church halls, neighborhood sidewalks, cafe shifts and the quiet language of food. What begins as observation slowly becomes something deeper

This is a story about where love for food comes from, how faith and community can both shelter and isolate, and how the smallest moments in childhood can echo for a lifetime
