Enough to Eat?

That's 1 in 7 people. 1.2 million live on less that $1 a day. 12 million children a year die of preventable diseases- and over half of these deaths are caused by malnutrition. So what can we do in our everyday lives to change that? That's exactly what I want to find out...

Women's rights campaigners are descending from all over the world this week to protest at the lack of female voices at the talks on NATO summit in Newport, South Wales. 

The ratio of men to women at the conference is shocking- but according to Samira Hamid from the Afghan Women's Network, the situation is particularly dire regarding talks about Afghanistan. Vegitarianism- Yay or Nay?

Amidst discussions of world hunger, a topic often broached is that of Vegitarianism. In the West, we consume vast amounts of meat- far more than we require to survive. This consumption has become a way of life- meat is the main part of nearly every main meal.

To be clear, the bible does not advocate vegitarianism. The debate here does not concern cruelty to animals- that debate is for another day. In 1 Timothy 4:4, it clearly says that "everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving." Therefore, are not to abide by the rules of the old covenant regarding how we eat and drink.

The concern here is in regard to equal distribution of the world's resources. As the saying goes, the earth provides for every man's need, but not every man's greed. At the moment, a huge proportion of the grain produced in the world is fed to cattle and livestock- meanwhile millions of people do not have enough to eat. In my view, that means that our priorities are wrong. 

Don't get me wrong, I love a chicken curry as much as the next person- I would struggle to forego meat completely for my entire life. Do I think that widespread vegitarianism is the single answer to world hunger? No. But I do think that we could cut back on our consumption of meat quite substantially and still live healthy lives- in some cases much healthier ones! We do not need to have meat every single day- I know I sometimes have meat twice a day! That is why I am making a commitment to cut back the amount of meat I have in my diet.

In the long run, if done on a large scale, this would help solve the problems we have distributing the earth's resources- but change will never happen unless we all work together.
