ANTONIO CIPRIANO AS JOHN LOGAN OFF CAMPUS, 1.01.
Everybody in Off Campus looks like they're 35 years old
Finding out that the author behind A Series of Unfortunate Events is a Jew makes the sheer absurdity of the incompetence of the adults in the Baudelaires’ lives make soooo much more sense when you start seeing Count Olaf as a metaphor for antisemitism. How they repeatedly tell whoever their current guardian is who and what is after them and they just patronizingly tell them that they don’t know what they’re talking about or choose not to see through the very obviously thin disguise (a metaphor for dog whistles). The gaslighting. The willful ignorance. It’s so painfully familiar.

Millions of Jews are thinking thoughts we do not express. You cannot live in a Jewish body after the Holocaust without being troubled by such musings about that body’s nature and fate at the hands of others who can define it at will. Like people living on the San Andreas Fault, or in other places prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, tornados, forest fires, mudslides, and the like, Jews aware of their history live with the ongoing sense that a social or societal quake may make non-Jews their enemies more or less overnight. And since those others are far more numerous, our vulnerability is obvious. The social structure may suddenly shift beneath us, leaving us scrambling rather desperately for a foothold. It is not a paranoid fantasy, it’s a historical reality. It probably can’t happen “here,” we think, but then again perhaps it can.
‘The Jewish Body’ by Melvin Konner
I wonder how many non Jews are aware that we did try to go back after the Holocaust. There's plenty of stories about someone's grandmother or grandfather trying to return home in Poland or Germany to find strangers living in their houses, using their silver kiddish cups or their Shabbos candlesticks. Using their tables and homes and clothes, as if everything was simply abandoned by choice and was free to take. Some of us DID try going back.
We were not welcomed to. There was nothing left because they ensured there wouldn't be.
My Great uncle, my Grandfathers brother, went to get their farm back after he returned from fighting with the Red Army against the Nazis. The Poles caught him, and crushed his head in a vice. My Hebrew name is his in memory.
