i finished embassytown and i REALLY liked it -- after the sparrow i was left with this craving for sci-fi with aliens that are actually disconcertingly hard-to-understand, or, well, alien. both novels are doing entirely different things so it is unfair to compare them however i now need to read something that combines mievelle's mastery of the bizarre and unfathomable and rusell's character relationship writing that makes you want to kill yourself when bad things happen to them. maybe i should just re-read vandermeer's borne my best friend borne
