Important Cosplay Construction Question to Ask Yourself
Let’s talk crafting theory for a moment. I’ve noticed that there are times when a cosplayer finishes creating a costume and forgets to take into consideration some very important issues that can arise. Always ask yourself these questions before and during the construction of a cosplay.
Can you easily move around the convention space?
Can you fit through a doorway?
Can you fit in an elevator with other people?
Will parts of your costume/prop be at risk of being knocked or stepped on?
Will those parts be reinforced so they will not break or rip?
Will those parts be at risk of hurting other people if they run into your costume?
How will I transport the costume/prop?
Will it fit in the trunk of my car?
Will it fit in a suitcase and meet weight requirement for an airline?
Are there ways to break down the costume for easier transportation
Will you be able to get in and out of the costume without help?
Will there be someone available to help you in and out of the costume
Are there ways to change the design so you can get in and out yourself?
Can you easily go to the bathroom?
Where will you hold your stuff (ID, cash, phone, etc)?
Can you include pockets, hidden compartments, or a matching bag to hold your stuff?
Will my costume/prop be permitted at the convention?
Does it meet the cosplay dress code requirement of all the conventions you plan to attend in it?
Does your prop fall into the proper weight, height, and safety measures for all the conventions you plan to take it to?
I will be adding to this list as I think of more important theoretical questions to ask one’s self during the creation of a cosplay.
I would like to add to this list a little, mostly for the first set of questions –
If your costume does not or cannot be modified to answer “yes” to all of these questions, what is your plan? Not every costume (indeed, some of the most impressive costumes) cannot be reasonably modified to fit some of these criteria, so the cosplayer will need a plan in place to deal with issues.
If the costume is too large to fir through a standard doorway easily, where will it be worn? How will the cosplayer get to that location (anything from ducking to get through doors to the outside to putting on very large pieces when already outside or in the location)? Who will be the handler? How will large pieces be accounted for when maneuvering through space (walking with long trains, wings, etc.)? How long will the cosplayer wear this costume for?
Sometimes costumes can be worn outside at conventions where it is too large to be worn inside, so taking that into account can be helpful, as well. Not every costume needs to be able to fit through a crowded convention, but those costumes probably shouldn’t be worn in those environments and only be worn in locations where there is enough space for the safety of everyone involved, such as outside in an open area, or in a large open area inside the convention center (if this exists/if there aren’t fire regulations that say that anyone needs to fit through a standard doorway with ease).

Hey, U.S. Tumblrs. Your country needs you.
In just about six weeks, on November 6, you will have the privilege of exercising your right to vote in the midterm elections. You, the people, will determine one-third of all U.S. senators and all 435 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. And we want you to feel empowered as hell as you make it happen.
But you can only make a difference if you’re registered to vote.
National Voter Registration Day is on September 26.
Take a few minutes right now and visit NVRD (@nationalvoterregistrationday) to register anytime between now and then. Don’t forget: if you’ve recently changed your name or moved across state lines, you need to update your registration. Have questions? @plannedparenthood wants to help! This Monday, September 24, they will be answering your questions about voting. Go ahead and head over to their ask box now.
What else can you do?
Stay informed. Over the next six weeks, right up until election day, we’re going to highlight and partner up with a number of organizations that can help you stay educated about issues that matter most. We’ll put a spotlight on some of our old favorites for educational resources, like @everytown for sensible gun laws and Fight for the Future (@fight4future) for net neutrality. You can also look forward to hearing more from:
Women — There are more women running for office in 2018 than there has ever been in U.S. history. Huffington Post and and MAKERS (@makerswomen) will be interviewing some of these incumbents and newcomers.
Headcount — Headcount (@thefutureisvoting) stages voter registration drives at concerts and runs programs that translate the power of music into real action. Their goal? Change the culture of voting to turn every election—local, state, and federal—into an event worth celebrating. It shouldn’t feel like a chore.
When We All Vote — @whenweallvote is a new national, nonpartisan, not-for-profit that promises to spark new conversation around the responsibilities we all share in shaping the promise of our democracy. Namely, the responsibility of registering and voting.
#VoteTogether — #VoteTogether offers grants of $2,500 to local organizers to hold and promote nonpartisan block parties near polling places. This year Tumblr will be the financial sponsor and partner of two #VoteTogether events.
10/25 — Black Girls Vote + Tumblr present: #VoteTogether in Baltimore. BGV focuses on organizing Black women across the country to participate in local, state and national elections. Tumblr will be supporting BGV for an all-day event led by 50 of their student leaders from Morgan State University. We will then lead a march to the polls followed by a #VoteTogether block party with announcements of scholarships for some of the incredible students.
10/27 — Equity Alliance + Tumblr present: #VoteTogether in Nashville. This year will be Equity Alliance’s third #VotingIsLit celebration. EA is planning on hosting a Halloween-themed and family friendly event in the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville, and we want to see you there. The spookiest costume? A person who forgot to register to vote by September 26, National Voter Registration Day.
Be on the lookout for more information on these events in the coming weeks! We want you there.
Phew. That was a lot. We know. But this is important stuff. The past few years may have felt particularly exhausting to you. You’re not alone. Take care of yourselves however you can, and remember that you and your vote matter. Let your voice be heard.
And one more time, for good measure:
National Voter Registration Day is on September 26.

Firefighter demonstrates how to put out a kitchen fire
Reblog to actually save a life
To explain. The latter works because you’re cutting off the supply of oxygen to the fire and suffocating it
as opposed to slapping oxygen inside the pan with the downward motion
Reblogging, because this is so important. When I was learning how to cook for myself in my tweens, I had at least a five years of fire safety seminars from school drilling this into my head, and I STILL had that instinctive put-the-fire-out-with-water reflex. Didn’t even think. I saw our oily burner catch fire after frying eggs, whipped around towards the sink for water, and my brain immediately screamed NO!!! NO WATER! I mean that fire safety stuff straight up bitchslapped me out of REFLEXIVELY setting my house on fire. I found a pot lid and inched it over the burner before turning off the heat. Even if you think you know this stuff, panic is powerful shit. Make knowledge more powerful.
“Even if you think you know this stuff, panic is powerful shit. Make knowledge more powerful.”
It’s the rapidly removing the lid that causes the fire to reignite, not the slapping the lid down. Slapping the lid down doesn’t “slap oxygen inside”. You’re not a freaking air compressor.
