Regarding Character Surnames. Nationality and Racial Belonging
Why are the surnames "Sakamaki" and "Tsukinami" not used with the parents' names?
Sakamaki Kanato, Sakamaki Shu, Sakamaki Ayato... It sounds right, doesn't it? Sakamaki Richter, Sakamaki Cordelia, Sakamaki Christa... How awful, don't you think?
From anime, games, and other sources, we know that Karlheinz's six sons bear the surname Sakamaki. At the same time, it's said that this surname is only used in the human world and nowhere else. And also that the older brothers cannot bear it. How true is all of this?
Currently, the brothers live in the human world. Among their father's personas is that of the politician "Sakamaki Tougo" — this was mentioned even in the first game. That is, in the eyes of ordinary people, the six boys are the sons of this highly respected Sakamaki Tougo.
However, I have noticed multiple times that this surname is used in the Demon World as well, coming from the mouths of demons. For example, in the second game, Beatrix tells Shu that he is the "future head of the Sakamaki family" (MB Shu Ecstasy Epilogue), and in Dark Fate, one of the demons addresses Kanato as "Sakamaki Kanato" (DF Kanato Vampire End). Despite the fact that the surname Sakamaki is mentioned by demons as well, I have never noticed any of the secondary characters being called either "Sakamaki Richter" or "Tsukinami Gisbach." For now, we can assume that they are referred to as the "Sakamaki family" by the creators themselves for the convenient designation of belonging to one family — after all, we also have the Mukami and Tsukinami families. Speaking of Tsukinami:the combination of a purely Japanese surname and a purely English name also looks discordant — "Tsukinami Carla." But in the game, the brothers introduce themselves as returnees who left England, and this at least somewhat explains it.
But what about the Sakamakis? And why were the parents given European names, while the children were given Japanese ones? In Dark Fate,the creators corrected this flaw. It is hinted at in Shu's route and explained in detail in Yuma's route that vampires actually have true names¹. Thus, Shu's vampire name is Lilie: the German word for the lily flower. In Lost Eden, Kou's true name is revealed to be Emilio. Yuma, as we know, was formerly Edgar.
The surnames "Sakamaki" or "Tsukinami" are never used together with the names of any of the older generation: Karlheinz, Cordelia, Beatrix, Christa, Richter are not Sakamaki, and Gisbach, Krone, Mene, Fersen are not Tsukinami.
Whereas the names of the main characters are listed in the fanbooks as 'Reiji Sakamaki', 'Yuma Mukami', 'Carla Tsukinami', the secondary characters are listed simply as 'Karlheinz', 'Cordelia', 'Beatrix', 'Christa', 'Richter'.
MEANING OF THE SURNAMES
•「逆巻」 = [sakamaki] = "Sakamaki"
「逆巻く」= [sakamaku] means "to surge/roll against the current (of waves)". It's essentially a hint that the family is going "against something". There is also another interpretation I noticed a long time ago but initially didn't include in the article. 「逆」 can be translated as "reverse, against", and one of the meanings of 「巻」 is "to wind (a clock)".
This alludes to how Karlheinz turned back time again and again, winding his clock of time. However: 1. This only started from the second game, but already in the first game our boys were "Sakamaki"; 2. Still, a complete phrase is a complete phrase. Although the creators could well have noticed a specific play on words within the surname, which they might have used while developing the scenario for More,Blood.
The Sakamaki family crest features the 「祝福の剣」 = "Sword of Blessing" (CD drama Sadistic Song vol.5 + annotation). It was passed down through generations in their family, and only those born from the power of the Eden's World Tree and who obtained that power could touch it. The crest depicts a vampire with "wings spread wide," which "protect" the sword. A "ribbon" wrapping around it can also be seen.

• 「無神」 = [mukami] = "Mukami"
Literally 'godless'. It fully corresponds to the worldview and fate of the brothers.
On the Mukami crest, one can see a large sword in the center and four smaller rapiers/sabers on either side of it.
The Mukami motto: 'The Honorable Sword will never break' = 「誉れ高き剣は折れぬ」 (PV House of Vampire).
• 「月浪」 = [tsukinami] = "Tsukinami"
「月」 as "moon, month" and 「浪」 as "large wave" or a part of words meaning "to wander." Considering that the progenitors present themselves in the human world both as Tsukinami and as returnees from England, their surname can be interpreted as "those who wander under the moon," "moon wanderers" (or "moon wave").
The Tsukinami crest depicts a wolf inside a crescent moon.
The Tsukinami motto: 'I can dominate the moon' = 「我ら月を司る」 (PV House of Vampire).
• 「小森」 = [komori] = "Komori"
You can choose any name for the heroine in the game;by default, she is 'Komori Yui'. The girl has an interesting surname: the kanji 「小」 (the syllable 'ko') gives words and phrases the meaning of "small" and "modest," and 「森」, that is [mori], means "forest" or "temple grove."
At the same time, there are several other words in the Japanese language that sound similar but have completely different meanings. Therefore, if you don't know the spelling of Yui's surname, it can lead to some amusing wordplay. For example, [kōmori], with a long first syllable, is the word 「蝙蝠」 = "bat (of the order Chiroptera)". [komori] also sounds like 「子守」 = "childcare," "nanny". There is also the word 「お籠り」 = [o-komori] = "a night spent in prayer at a temple." Considering Yui's story, this becomes very interesting and doesn't seem like a coincidence.
• Kino
Kino had several coats of arms. The last one depicts a heart split into two halves, wrapped in a stem with thorns.
Kino's motto: 'Death knows everything' = 「死こそ、知る」 (PV House of Vampire).
He does not belong to the Sakamaki family, and this surname is never used with his name.
On the official website's character list², he is the only one listed without a surname.
NATIONALITY AND RACE OF THE CHARACTERS
Sakamaki, Tsukinami, Kino, and other demons The Sakamaki brothers, Tsukinami brothers, and Kino have no nationality — they are demons, not humans, and were born as demons. Each character belongs to their own demonic clan/race.
· Thus, Karlheinz, Richter, and Christa are vampires.
· Therefore, all six Sakamaki brothers (Shu, Reiji, Ayato, Kanato, Laito, Subaru) are also vampires (members of the bat clan).
· Cordelia always considered herself a half-vampire and the daughter of the Demon King Burai, who by race is a Bibora (snake clan). · When Ruki in Lost Eden returned to his city to find out more about Trismegistus (Karlheinz's persona), he went to a 「ルーマニアの図書館」 = "Romanian library". In theory, he was born and raised in Romania. And if the other Mukami lived in the same city, then they should also be from Romania. Edgar (Yuma) grew up in a village, but it's unlikely he could have escaped to another country after the fire. Fun fact: Yui is canonically Japanese, not European. Shu referred to her as 「東洋人」 (Tōyōjin) – a term for "an Easterner" (DL Shu Ending 01). Kou also called her "a Japanese" (MB Kou Maniac Prologue).
But demons are NOT Japanese. The only thing we know is that the Mukami are European, but they were originally humans. The Sakamaki are born demons; they do not have a nationality.
It’s especially amusing to look at Reiji’s page on the English wiki: his father’s ethnicity is listed as "demon," while his mother has no ethnicity field at all — yet Reiji is, of course, labeled as Japanese. Why?
We know that demons also possess demonic names. Shu’s is Lilie 「リーリエ」 (NOT “Ririe” as misspelled on the English wiki!). Doesn’t sound very Japanese, does it?

Why did Cordelia NOT 'have sex with Richter in front of Kanato and Laito'?
Part Two: LAITO
Part One: Kanato is still being edited
According to the myths, Kanato wasn't the only one who witnessed his mother's "intimate relationship" with her "lover" - Laito supposedly saw a lot of things, too. But no matter what the fandom makes up for drama's sake, it's really not that bad: the youngest triplet was just unlucky enough to witness Cordelia giving Richter her blood. It happened in the DL Laito Maniac Prologue.
Sometime in the past, Karlheinz ordered his son imprisoned in a dungeon - for what exactly, by the way, is not explained here or in the game.
The scene begins with Richter's poems, which serve as an epigraph.

All the fans then decided — and still believe — that Cordelia decided to have sex with Richter in front of her son — and forced the boy, as a "good boy," to watch the copulation. Since the process of absorbing blood is eroticized according to the canon, then only he could be implied in this scene.

Kanato feels this eerie cold during the rain — it was on a rainy night that he burned his mother's corpse (DL Kanato Ecstasy Epilogue), hoping to make her exclusively his. Now, looking at Teddy, which holds her ashes, he understands that he only received "remains," which are "not enough" for him.
This is the answer to the question of why Cordelia asked Kanato to sing to her and felt terribly cold: it wasn't about sexual arousal at all; she felt the same coldness from her own despair and loneliness.
Parallel Episodes: DL Laito Maniac Prologue + Ecstasy 09
We've established that the body of a victim or a demon can literally burn from a bite or the anticipation of bloodsucking.
Now we need to understand what excites Laito, what arouses him: is it when he watches someone else drink from or have sex with his victim?
In his own route, there's a scene where he precisely recreates something he once saw in the dungeon — DL Laito Ecstasy 09. In this scene, Yui finds herself in a torture chamber, where she meets Ayato. He tries to advise her to "do it" and not to "remain faithful" to Laito.

And by "this," only bloodsucking is implied, while "fidelity" specifically refers to the fact that Yui had not yielded to another guy's fangs.
Ayato only wishes to drink Yui's blood. He has no intention of having sex with her.
But then Laito himself appears in the torture chamber — it's interesting and important what question he asks his brother and how.

When Laito delivers his first line, his sprite shows no smile, and his eyes are narrowed. For the second line, his expression becomes aggressive. Furthermore, the word "what", which is usually written with the kanji 「何」 or hiragana 「なに」, is here highlighted in katakana — as 「ナニ」. The emphasis is on it — Laito is concerned with "what exactly" Ayato intended to do to his victim. If his brother was planning to do something with her that Laito wouldn't approve of, he might even "torture him to death."
Ultimately, the young man gets a "brilliant" idea: Laito suggests that Ayato drink Yui's blood, while he himself intends to observe the event. Ayato accepts the offer.
In the process, Yui notes that her body, once again, "is burning, blazing." And Laito observes that she is clearly enjoying someone else's fangs. He also calls the girl the same name Ayato used for his mother: 「アバズレ」 = "whore," "slut."
滅多にない味がするぜえ?ん……んん……っ……
Ayato: This taste is quite rare, isn't it? Mmm... m-mm...
(ライトくんが見てる前で……こんな。でも……でも……身体が……熱くなってくる……逆らえない)

Here, we need to follow Laito's logic.
It turns out he can offer his victim's blood to another man. He will watch as this other man drinks from her. This will arouse him.
But if this other man does "something" inappropriate with the girl, Laito will kill him. In anger. And here, "something" implies sex.
Let's return to the dungeon episode with Cordelia and Richter. Laito, watching them, was also smiling and getting aroused. That is, he behaved exactly the same way he does now, observing Ayato drinking Yui's blood. 3, 4. Third frame: Cordelia's neck is exposed, straps are down, her dress is held at her chest. Richter's face is near her neck, behind her hair. Fourth frame: Laito's astonished face.

Listen, Laito. You're a good boy, aren't you?
— Cordelia's line is almost identical to the game's — except for "m-m" at the beginning.

Then/therefore you'll watch, won't you?
— but this phrase was not spoken in the game: apparently, they decided to add it to the manga to further prove the point: Cordelia aims for her son to watch what's happening.
5, 6. Fifth frame: Laito in the dungeon, Cordelia's and Richter's shadows on the floor.
Sixth frame: Another shot of Cordelia — flushed, Richter's face still buried in her hair.

— completely matches the game version: this is one line from the game, broken into two parts in the manga.
7. Moving to the next page: Now Laito has a pleased expression.

— a slightly shortened line from the game.
That's all. Besides the lines of dialogue, which for the most part repeat phrases from the game (which we have already analyzed), we need to pay attention to the visual sequence.
First: the way Richter buries himself in Cordelia's hair in two frames exactly replicates the position of Yui and Ayato in the CG from DL Laito Ecstasy 09. That very scene analyzed above, where Laito recreates his memories.
Ayato is definitely drinking Yui's blood at this moment — we understand this from the dialogue and sounds. However, there is no blood on the girl's neck, no bite marks, and Ayato's face is buried in her hair. It's not strange that Richter's face, while drinking Cordelia's blood, is similarly buried in her hair, and there are no bite marks or blood on her neck either.
Second: in the manga, the boys sometimes undressed Yui down to her underwear to drink from her neck. It's logical that Cordelia would also lower her dress straps for the same purpose.
How is this episode described in the fanbook for the first game?
As an exclusive blood-drinking scene.
自分の中で目覚めたライトの母・コーデリアの意識に戸盛う主人公。ライトはそんな彼女をアヤトに差し出し、吸血させます。ライトの目の前でアヤトに吸血され、快楽を感じてしまう自分に対して覚える混乱。コー デリアのこと、ライトの行動……数々のことが主人公の心をかき乱します。
"The main character is confused by the consciousness of Cordelia — Laito's mother — awakening within her. Laito offers her to Ayato, allowing him to drink her blood. Being drunk from by Ayato in front of Laito, she is bewildered by the pleasure she feels. Cordelia, Laito's actions... — many things trouble the heroine's heart."
After all that has been presented, we can draw an unambiguous conclusion:
Cordelia deliberately allowed Richter to drink her blood in front of Laito — nothing more.
Everything attests to this:
• the message of the phrase "the body burns with anticipation";
• Laito's logic when recreating an analogous scene with Ayato and Yui;
• Laito's willingness to share the girl's blood with another man, but his readiness to kill if someone were to have sex with her;
• the position of the figures in the manga;
• the correspondence of the figures' positions in the manga and the game's CG, where only bloodsucking definitely occurred.
There is no other possible interpretation of this scene. The conclusion in this case is unequivocal.
What we have just analyzed is not a theory; it is a fact. The one and only possible one. If any reviewers on their YouTube channels claim otherwise, they are incorrect. I have thoroughly explained the meaning embedded in these scenes, how they are revealed and presented. Any other interpretation, a.k.a. "Cordelia had sex with Richter/her lovers in front of Kanato/Laito," is fundamentally wrong.

In the beginning, God made phantoms and thieves.
If you're reading this in English, there's a 90% chance you first learned the word Kaitou from Kaito himself—and only slowly come to realize just how many corners of Japanese pop-culture it's really bled into, from Tezuka to Tuxedo Mask to Princess Peach. There's thieves, there's thieves with style, and then there's phantom thieves. A law unto themselves in their own worlds and ours, a breed of gentlemen who can magically stay gentlemen while doing the most ungentlemanly things known to society.
You'd need a book—probably a whole shelf—to properly explore all the ancestors of this proud archetype, never mind all the twists and turns it's taken in modern times. But we're a bunch of poors in money and time, so let's settle for just one tonight.
Fun fact, there's a doctor in Japan who runs a full-time clinic, lectures for one of the top med schools, and still finds room to blog about his fifty-odd niche interests. With him lighting the way, we tracked down this: the oldest book Japan's National Library has ever picked the word Kaitou out of.
Not a gentleman sort of book, you'd assume—and be absolutely right. Dated 1908 (just a little after Leblanc's Lupin, just a little before his first Japanese translation), Eishirō Suzuki's Strange Worlds is a loud, proud freakshow, trotting out ghost story after tall tale after Believe-It-Or-Not article about some wackos in America marrying in a lion cage. Our story of interest comes about halfway in: six pages and change, unmistakably headed 怪盗.
What lies within? A tragically forgotten ancestor to this great and greatly profitable archetype? Or a dead-end that happens to share the name and damn little else? Or, despite all odds, a combination of both?

Phantom Thief
In the days of Jōkyō,¹ near Shitaya's Ikenohata-town, a pawn-shop called Yamaguchi Place² stood rich beyond imagining. Its master, with eleven vaults to his name, was a long and proud worshiper at the Benzaiten³ shrine on Shinobazu Pond. Now, it happened that this man heard the Shogun’s offices had recently surveyed the pond for land-filling, and grew troubled.
One evening, having closed early and settling the day's accounts, the boy tending the shop heard a tap at the front door, and opened to look. Lo and behold—there was a magnificent palanquin, inlaid four-square with silver, bound on every side by tens of fine, sentinel-eyed Samurai. Shocked, the boy ran to his master telling all. The master, no less shocked, came out with warm greetings, asking the company into his home.
Then from the palanquin emerged a most exquisite woman, so noble and divine of bearing that she might have been taken for a celestial maiden, with face sweeter than any peach or plum, and dress of the richest twill brocade. With hardly a sound this beauty sat, drew open her vermilion lips, and bade all listen—
“To begin, my being is not of flesh, but an envoy of Her Lady Benzaiten, in whom thou hast believed all thy life. The Shogun's men mean to bury Shinobazu Pond, and Her Ladyship suffers no small distress hearing this, for Her own power may well draw sanctuary from any ladle's-worth of water, but Her kith and kin—some hundreds upon thousands of scales—must wilt and suffer without mires to call home. “Deep ran Benzaiten's pity, and with it a divine will to bring salvation of some, of any kind. Mercifully, thy garden declares a most generous pond, and in behalf of those kith and kin I call upon thee to guarantee it as their new sanctum. If thy faith in Benzaiten be strong and true, take not these words in vain. Know only that Her Ladyship wills a night of storm and squall, fast approaching, to lay Her kin. Come that day, thou shouldst make fast the doors of thy home, withdraw to thine own room, and put no eye at door-slit, nor foot outside to enquire. Heed this, and Benzaiten will grow thy riches ten-fold in reward. Such is my message, in sum.”
Hearing this, the man grew ecstatic—rapturous, even. He spared nothing treating his guest, servants and all, to the very end of their departure.
In less than a fortnight came a dawn with greying skies, and by afternoon rain was falling, the wind slowly rising. On this day the man chose to fast, thinking it the day Benzaiten would descend, and so admonished his family and cohorts, warning them to keep the doors firmly shut and let no-one out after dark.
As the night crept toward second-watch,⁴ the wind grew wilder and wilder, until all the trees and bamboo in the garden could be heard thrashing, and all the water in the pond roiling. Now every breath was held, every head bowed, every heart thundering, thinking it time for She to come. Gradually the rain stopped and the wind ebbed, and the master, unable to wait for dawn, immediately threw open the door, eyes cast on the garden and its pond. There, he saw fish darting—more than the prior day—and thought, Benzaiten, your fellows are sown. Then, thinking of the promised reward, he rushed to check his stores. But as he swept up and down the row of vaults behind his shop, what did he find? Every lock undone, and every door open! Now uneasy, he entered, and found nothing left! Not the pawn-goods, nor the furniture, nor the thousand-ryō boxes. Floor to ceiling, everything was nigh-bare. He stood alone, dumbfounded and gaping.
Now, it happened that a shrine sat in the mountains on Kōshū-Kaidō Road, and before this shrine came men in packs, reeking of banditry, laying down their fresh and ill-gotten gains, eager for a proper portioning.
Onto this the shrine opened its doors, and who should be shocked to see the bandits' chief! No older than twenty-eight years she stood, with beauty to shame the sky and stars. A beauty that laughed aloud and said—
“My, what lovely work, boys!”
It was this very enchantress who had gulled the shop-master by claiming to be a goddess's envoy—and then, catching the slightest storm, sent all these men to his shop in dead of night. Some had hitched ropes to trees and bamboo all around his garden, and whipped them to bluff the sounds of a roaring wind, while others had beaten at the pond to affect waves. Under such clamor they had cunningly hidden any sounds of vault doors opening, of wares being moved.
A most unusual—most phantasmic—thief, no?

The episode (chapter) that changed Detective Conan forever. Gosho had always wanted Kaito Kid to confront Conan, and perhaps only once, but he became popular too quickly, much like when Rei Furuya was first introduced. It’s funny that he appeared so 'early' on, especially after bringing Heiji in as the main rival of the series, because it's in fact Conan/Shinichi and Kaito who will take the concept of 'pushing each other to greater heights' to perfection.

Another funny thing in the episode is that Hiromi Muranaka is credited alongside with Masatomo Sudo as Animation Director, and it's crazy how Muranaka is the only AD who comes the closest to Sudo's style in the anime, no matter the 'era'. So, in terms of corrections, and given that it’s a pretty important episode, there wasn’t any too "sudden" change in style.
