Sketching out Leclerc from the book, from a recent ask. You guys are right, there's not enough of him out there! Even the screenwriter talked in an interview about wanting to include the nuking Antarctica scene from the book but not having enough time. It was a shame, tho I agree they didn't really have time to expand on it. This part of the book is so beautifully sad. Just reread it and had to take a crack at what he might look like. What's kind of hilarious is the author just describes him as "A man I had never seen before" so uh...he can be any age really! Any hair style! And etc!

Keep in mind I at any point might update this, if a more accurate model is shown. The one in the video is pretty close spare for a few minor details.

we’ve thoroughly discussed touch starved grace on the hail mary, but what about touch starved rocky?
he hasn’t touched another living member of his species in over 46 years. the single time he gets to actually touch another life form, he has to watch as their contact permanently scars them. the mental agony probably hurt just as much as the physical.
grace can learn his language, but he can’t actually speak it. rocky can start a thrum, but the human can never properly join and share that connection. he loves grace because grace is his friend, but their differences make rocky feel lonely lonely lonely.

Grace mentioning to Rocky that he used to watch his ship every evening after they parted ways (and do complex math to figure out when he's going to lose sight of it completely). Grace is. a little bit embarrassed about the whole thing.
Rocky is ecstatic.

Sacrifice for human kind
This moment is so dear to me I want to cry. First of, Grace is so gentle with him? Something something kindness literally saves the world (two worlds, in this case). Also, you just KNOW that Grace is that teacher in whose classroom the kids go to cry when they feel like the whole world has turned against them.
But secondly, "I'm a science human"! Because yeah. None of them is the other's weird alien dog. None of them is the "smart one" (or rather, they both are). They can't do this without each other. They complement each other. They need each other to succeed, there's no other way. That's the whole point! Cooperation! Connection! Working together!
Hope core at its finest.
