Action Required
A customer in Shreveport, LA saw and documented parakeets stuffed in a travel size tank at her local Petsmart. This sort of containment and overcrowding for any amount of time is neglectful, improper and dangerous. Birds need adequate space, and proper air flow. Overcrowding is extremely stressful and can result in injuries. An inexperienced and borderline abusive worker hitting the tank no doubt would terrify these birds, who are likely young, scared and not used to humans.
Please contact Petsmart to complain. Please reblog, and signal boost.

I just posted on their FB Page:
Dear @Petsmart, this is not ok.
As a person in avian rescue, these smaller birds suffer the most at the hands of those who purchase them on impulse. “It’s just a budgie. Why am I going to spend 70$ to take them to a vet when they’re only 20$” is often heard. They are allowed to get sick and die without a second thought.
We have retrieved budgies and lovebirds left in the trash, stories of families starving them to death because of people loosing interest. No living creature deserves this. Birds are emotional, sensitive, and very intelligent. The record holder for most words known is in fact held by a parakeet.
Please consider promoting a pro-adoption perspective to other animals, similar to what you do with cats and dogs. Perhaps watch Disco the budgie on youtube to see how magnificent little birds can be.
We have adoptive families fill out adoption forms and undergo a home interview - doesn’t matter what size of bird it is. They all deserve devoted families that are willing to go the extra distance for their care.
BIRBLR! UNITE! Let Petsmart and any company doing wrong by birds know we won’t tolerate this.
This is horrible.
Lexie speaking: Very sorry if this upsets anyone. We feel it needs to be shared for awareness at the very least. Please avoid buying your birds from pet stores. Please raise hell about this kind of horrible treatment of animals. Thanks.

Meet Lou. Abandoned in a foreclosed home, Lou is one of thousands of parrots in need of rescue. From the wilds of Costa Rica to suburban America, a lovable, quirky cast of parrots will reveal their unforgettable tales and the bittersweet world they share with humans. Their outrageous intelligence and uncanny ability to communicate in any language has made parrots one of the world’s most popular pets. But unlike dogs and cats, parrots have not been domesticated.
Must see if you love parrots. This is why it is impossible to spoil a bird pet (whether it's a budgie or a macaw) with too much attention, (foraging)toys and healthy treats. You are always compensating that they are wild animals, meant to be free.
Always consider adoption first and never get one before doing lots and lots of research!

The goal of #SmallPetRespect is to encourage current and potential owners of small pets to become more educated on the animals they care for.
By tweeting facts and advice, we’ll destroy some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the smallest of our companions.
When it comes to animals like birds (particularly budgies and cockatiels), small mammals, rodents, reptiles, fish (bettas need special mention), amphibians, arachnids, etc, many are picked up on a whim without proper prior research. Many of these animals are cheaply obtained at chain pet stores.
To make matters worse, many enclosures, tanks, cages, and habitats sold in pet stores are not suitable for the animals they are marketed for.
Many animals wind up mistreated due to ignorance and a prevailing attitude that such pets are disposable. It’s time to change that.
Do you share your home with a small pet? What would you say to someone looking into owning one? You can join the conversation on Twitter and Tumblr by tagging #SmallPetRespect.
Share stories, wisdom learned, facts, resources, advice and more. Please signal boost! Help us show that though they are small, all pets deserve respect.
