Assessment 2 Final Artist: Eric Stuart-Jones Artwork: From Earth, with Love Date: 2017 Medium: Foam Board
Concept Statement - From Earth, with Love
My work 'From Earth, with Love' is an exploration of the new possibility where humans and non-humans are allowed to communicate verbally with each other. It demonstrates the abusiveness that we have applied to non-humans in our time on this planet, and how one would expect someone to respond to that abuse in the bluntest of manners. I wanted this work to be more about audience reaction than meaning. I wanted them to feel the initial shock and anger over being cursed at for absolutely no reason, so to communicate how it may feel on the non-human side when we abuse it. The idea came from a desire to take delve into a new possibility for the relationship for humans and non-humans, something I felt I had failed to do in my previous work, as well as experimentation. The new possibility I decided to explore was one wherein our relationship is no longer one way on a communicative level. Currently we use the environment to our hearts content, but never know how it might feel about that. We always look for signs of discontent, such as pollution or salinisation, but we never receive verbal feedback as we do in human to human relationships. When I asked myself, 'what would be the first thing a tree, a significant symbol and representative of the non-human world, say to humanity?', the very first thing that come to mind was the words 'Fuck you'. More specifically, 'Fuck you for everything that you've done. I was doing perfectly fine before you lot came along and started ripping everything up for your own green. Do you even care about my feelings at all?!'. In short, the relationship I would consider closest to the possible verbal relations between humans and non-humans is that of an abusive marriage, where one side is forced to submit to the other without a say in what goes on. My previous work focused too much on representing the current relations through visualisation. This is the easiest and least complicated way of showing how it is, but it doesn't present anything new. My previous work would follow what I would consider to be an 'HSC English' formula. I would show the image and the have to explain the visual techniques and how they contribute to the overall meaning and feeling the work is supposed pertain to. Never in any of my previous work or experimentation have I truly focus upon the initial reaction of the work, where a combination of simplicity and self-interpretation gives meaning to the work rather than long winded explanation. Our lesson in week 5 on 'Affect and Body Politics' taught me to treat the work as an experience rather than a symbol. When designing the tree initially, I had the letters fit in with the style of the branches, wavy with spikes coming out of the ends. I quickly realised however that the letters were becoming lost within the tree, and only those who looked hard enough could see the hidden meaning. I am not going for hidden meaning at all. The reason the work is completely colourless is so that the responder is only able to focus on shape, and therefore be forced to make out the letters. I want people to look at the work straight away and be able to read what is says clear as day, so they can take immediate offense to it. I want them to take onboard those initial feelings of 'What did you just say to me?' and 'Why did you say that?', and reflect on moments where they may have caused others to think or say the same thing to them. I want the work to be somewhat of a role play where the non-human abuses the human and the human takes offense. I want to put the audience directly in that possibility so that they may gain a new experience and understanding of our relationship with non-humans. In terms of artist inspiration for my work, the main figure would be Banksy, someone I've admired for a long time. Banksy's strength as a street artist is taking familiar innocent images and setting that people are familiar with and re-appropriating them to create a new provocative meaning. I aspired for my work to have that same level of provocation. The tree is an international symbol of peace, tranquility and nature, so by juxtaposing it with a provocative statement, I hope to develop a strong reaction from the responder. Cut out board (no stand)
FINAL WORK DEVELOPMENT I wanted to make the branches a bit thicker so to improve the structural integrity of the work, but this drew attention to the fact that the letters were getting somewhat hidden in the trees. Therefore, I decided to create a much simpler looking tree with far less complex letters. The next stage will be printing this as a stencil and using it to cut the shape out of black foam board.
Artist Inspiration - Sarah Bigwood Sarah Bigwood's 'Sweary Colour Book' features the kind of provocative meaning and gentle imagery mix that I wish to achieve with my work. It features aspects of the natural world to juxtapose with the intruding and offensive nature of the language being used. The shock value comes from not only the words themselves, but how they are presented Artist: Sarah Bigwood Artwork: Swearing Colour Book selected images Date: 2016 Medium: Digital Artwork/Book Source: Bored Panda, Author Ingrida Barks, https://www.boredpanda.com/curse-sweary-coloring-book-sarah-bigwood/
Artist Inspiration - Banksy Banksy is a genius in creating provocative imagery by repurposing a familiar setting or image. His street art uses the kind of provocative simplicity that I hope to emulate in my work.

A2 EXPERIMENT 3 My next experiment is admittedly incomplete, but this is because I've decided to take what I have as my final work. Initially I wanted to create a series of works that showed elements of the non-human world creating swear words as a way of communicating their frustrations with the human world. Along with this tree, I was going to create a coral reef and flight of birds that spelt out cusses. However, this tree in particular gave me an idea to create an object similar to those wooden words that are used to decorate living rooms. These often spell out meaningful words such as 'love', 'family' etc. However, I want mine to take an opposite spin on this and be as uncaring and cold as possible, so to show the true feelings of the non-human world in our relationship.
Effect of Affect
Our week 5 lesson was all about affect. This particular lesson I feel resonated with me strongly, and has made me reflect and reconsider the way I operate and produce work. I'm an extremely practical person, and this is reflected in my art. I'm always looking to put meaning into every detail of my work, treating it as if it is an HSC English text that needs to be analysed and deconstructed order to be fully understood. Never have I thought to much about creating a work where the initial audience reaction creates the meaning of the work. My new direction for assessment 2 will to be create a work that draws a reaction, potentially provocative, from the audience, and that reaction is the centre of what I am trying to communicate about humans and non-humans
A2 EXPERIMENT 2 This experiment is based on a role reversal of my work in assessment 1. In my poster I represented non-humans in a human created form, specifically a cake. In this work I wanted to demonstrate humans in a non-human created form, focusing on how humans are a product of the non-human world after all. This is a representation of an alternate birthing process for humans, where we instead follow the germination process of flowers. I feel as if I could potentially go forward with this idea snd create a series of environments where human forms and body parts are used to create non-human environments.
A2 - EXPERIMENT 1 This is an experiment of form rather than concept. I wanted to make my previous work as simple as possible, but I feel I failed in this regard by adding to many minute details and images. In this work I wanted to only use basic form and shape, where the idea of the work could be easily picked up without the need for unnecessary exploration and scrutinisation of detail. In my opinion, this simplicity helps to create what could of been a superior poster.
A1 Reflection and Moving Forward
On reflection my work in assessment 1 is certainly not my best. I feel as if I did not fully push the realms of possibility when it comes to the relationship of humans and non-humans. My new goal is to experiment with my current idea of how humans and non-humans are inextricably linked, and develop a new sub-idea from this experimentation.
Assessment 1 Poster - 'Birth'day
CONCEPT STATEMENT - Assessment 1
Responding to Question 1: My poster is an exploration of the temporality issues within our relationship to non humans. It acts as a representation of the harsh reality this relationship with is not eternal. Each year our consumeristic and materialistic fantasies drives this relationship further towards its close with each passage of time. I've depicted this reality in the familiar setting of a birthday party. Birthdays are one of the best representations of the passage of time. Though we celebrate the passage of each year after our birth, a birthday can still have darker undertones. Time is not reversible, each year older we get the closer we are to our inevitable demise. The term 'birthday' has an element of irony to it. Though we are celebrating birth, we are actually moving further away from it. I felt that a birthday party therefore was a good way to represent the temporality issue in our relationship with non humans. The poster itself is a very colourful arrangement. Its style is extremely simplistic, which has been done to simulate the world how a child might see it. It sacrifices detail for visual stimulation. This has been done with the thought in mind that the demographic that this poster has been built for is all of humanity. It needs to appeal to people young and old, as our relationship with non humans is something we all share, not just a select few. Therefore, I needed to make the visuals of the work something that could be enjoyed by all. A cake is a main staple for every birthday. It's something we take pleasure in having, even if it isn't particularly healthy. Here, the cake acts as representation of the way we enjoy the Earth in a consumeristic sense. However, there are is an overarching issue with this enjoyment: It is limited. There is only so much cake we can have. And then what?
Poster Development 1. Initial Sketch/Idea 2. Collage/Rough Draft
NEW FOCUS - TEMPORALITY/TIME I decided after looking at some of the constraints of my work/idea (time constraints, the fact they didn't look very good in my opinion) to move in a new direction. While I want to continue looking at the relationship between humans and non humans in a new way, I want to look at a new issue. Time is something we rarely take into consideration when looking at our relationship with the environment, even though it is one of the most important elements. We have limited time, and the more we take dominate our relationship with non humans, the less time we have. One of my main inspirations is the above work I found on pintrest while scanning for some ideas. An extremely simple yet effective way to show the limited nature of our relationship with the non human environment.
