He definitely replays your confession in his head at night. How could he reject you out of all people. Anything you told him during your confession is 100% being used against you. Oh so you like how his gifts are always so considerate? Well now his gifts are extra considerate. Oh you like how strong he is? He acts a little bit like a female high schooler with a crush. Overly laughs at your jokes, sits a little too close, stares at you whenever he thinks you aren’t paying attention. When he asks you out he plays it off as a spur of the moment type of thing but in truth he’s been thinking about asking you out for a while. He really hopes that you 1: still like him and 2: that you don’t hold his rejection against him.
He feels upset about liking you. How could he have waited so long to fall in love with you. He’ll stare at his ceiling wondering how he could be so dumb. He wouldn’t confess to you. How could he? • Heizou is subtly touchy before you even realize he’s flirting. A hand at the small of your back while he guides you through crowded streets, soft fingers brushing beneath your chin to tilt your face toward him when he’s teasing you, leaning against your shoulder like he already belonged there already. It comes so naturally from him, that it feels almost unfair to you. Especially paired with that smug grin of his. That look in his eyes like he already knows exactly what kind of effect he’s had on you.
• He pays attention to everything. Every startled inhale when he suddenly hooks an arm around your shoulders. Every time your face heated up when he leaned just a little too close. Every nervous little glance you throw him when he compliments you out of nowhere. He notices it all instantly, and archons, he loves it. It’s everything to him.
• “Cute reaction.” That stupid line leaves his mouth constantly when he’s around you. And the worst part? He says it so painfully casual, like he’s not actively ruining your ability to think straight when you’re with him.
• He’s the type to take your hand without asking, and just continue talking normally afterward. Like dragging you through Inazuma City with interlocked fingers is the most obvious thing in the world. Like your heart isn’t currently trying to explode out of your chest and die while he casually points out food stalls and tells you about some bizarre case he had solved last week.
• Physical affection is easy for him when he’s the one giving it. Maybe too easy…
• Because Heizou learned very young how to adapt to people. How to be able to read them. How to make them laugh, how to smoothly charm them, how to stay one step ahead emotionally. It became second nature after he left home. After the wandering. After nights spent alone in unfamiliar places with only himself to rely on.
• Somewhere along the way, touch stopped being something comforting and became something strategic instead. Controlled. Safe, as long as he was the one to be initiating it.
• And then he met you.
• Sweet you. Lovely you. You, who listened to him ramble on and on about cases with genuine interest instead of the polite tolerance he was always given. You, who looked at him like there was more to him than just the flirty detective persona everyone else happily accepted at surface level.

• He usually sat shoulder-to-shoulder with you whenever it was possible. Threw himself dramatically across your lap when he’s bored with the urge to bother you. Resting his chin on your shoulder while reading over paperwork just because he can. If he was tired, he gets even worse about it. Just half asleep and clinging onto your arm like some oversized cat that decided you’re its new favorite sleeping spot.
• And you always react. Sometimes shy. Sometimes flustered. Sometimes speechless. Heizou lives for it.
• But the thing about Heizou is that he’s observant enough to notice what’s missing, too. You never pull away from him. Never reject him. Never seem uncomfortable. But you don’t initiate anything with him first either.
• At first, he tells himself he’s just imagining it. Then he starts testing it without realizing. He waits a little longer before grabbing your hand. Wonders if maybe you’ll reach for him first.
• You don’t.
• He’ll lean against your shoulder while talking and stays there quietly for a moment afterward. You just let him. But you don’t lean back.
• He hugs you goodbye and lingers just slightly longer than usual. You smile so sweetly at him afterward that it almost physically hurts. But your arms aren’t tightening around him.
• And the terrifying thing is that he starts caring.
• Because this was supposed to be easy. Heizou is painfully good at easy. Good at flirting. Good at making people blush and laugh and fall apart beneath his attention.
• He wasn’t supposed to start wondering if maybe you only tolerated his affection instead of wanting it like he thought.
• Wasn’t supposed to notice every tiny hesitation afterward from you. Wasn’t supposed to lie awake at night replaying interactions in his head like some hopeless idiot in love.
• He starts overthinking. Maybe he’s being too much. Being too clingy. Too touchy with you. Maybe you just didn’t know how to tell him to stop. The thought makes his stomach twist painfully.

• Trying not to think about how pathetic it felt to miss someone this much. Trying not to think about how frighteningly easy it would be for you to break his heart.
• Because Heizou can handle danger. He can handle criminals, secrets, lies, pressure.

• “You’re getting bold lately, huh?” he joked one day when you intertwined your fingers with his before he could do it first.
• Meanwhile his heart is practically trying to punch through his ribs at rapid paces. It scared him because he liked it too much.

Surviving
No brainer. They are helping you survive. You can be dead weight and it wouldn’t matter. He definitely pulls more night watch than you do. He takes on majority of the work. Does it get exhausting? Yes, but seeing you safe makes it all worth it. He will be the main person looking for food, killing zombies, etc. Sometimes you’ll just sleep on him while he’s on watch and he’ll gently stroke your back as you do.

If you had the energy to speak you spoke to each other about how grateful you were to have the other. You knew this time would come but it still felt bittersweet. It doesn’t matter if you were so thirsty that you didn’t have the ability to speak, either way you guys died in each other’s arms.

He immediately took care of the zombie before getting you guys out of the situation but you both knew it was too late. You were panicking, tears swelling in your eyes and so was he. He tried to reassure himself. How long did you have? How long did he have? Should he be reckless and kiss you? No. You made him promise to live on without you. He stayed with you until the first sign of you losing your mind. As much as he wanted to stay neither of you could stand the thought him seeing you turn into a mindless creature. He’d try and go as far away as possible. If he does see you while you are a zombie he won’t be able to hurt you, thus becoming a zombie himself.

Tried hard to keep you safe but at the end of the day he’s just a normal guy. He could have sealed with 1 or 2 zombies but anymore was just asking too much. All you guys were doing were looking for food but a zombie came out of nowhere. You both ran. You tripped and got bitten. He killed it but knew better than to stay with someone infected. By the end of that very day you guys had bid each other farewell. Perhaps it was newly found depression over losing his lover but he no longer tried as hard. Days later he had been bitten as well and found himself looking for you.
firm believer that Lohen’s ring is a promise ring. he never, ever, EVER takes it off unless absolutely necessary. and that’s like, extremely rare. even in battle he’ll wear it; he believes it gives him strength from your love.

the name 'lohen' stares back at you from your phone. you double and triple check the email, refreshing to see if it would change at all. however, when the name remains unchanged even after five refreshes, the reality of the situation starts to sink in on you.
seven years. seven years since he left a sixteen-year-old you waiting in the fields in your hometown, seven years since you lost all form of contact with him, and three years since you've stopped seeing him in your dreams.
exactly two years since you ran into him on campus while exiting the library, and two years you've spent actively avoiding him.
and now, in your last year of university, the school system has decided to pair you up with him.
you deny it at first, thinking of it as some kind of scarily specific prank by some hacker who has a vengeance against you. but the email address is legit, the number pasted at the bottom is a real one and this is definitely an event you regret joining.
according to the website, you and your pen pal will be matched according to your answers given on the questionnaire provided when you first sign up. based on your personality, interests and hobbies, the perfect partner will be found for you. (the website's words, not yours.)
once you are matched, an email will be sent to each of you, containing the other person's name and phone number. then, over the course of one school year, you'll exchange letters and get to know each other better. obviously, the main goal of the project is for willing participants to make friends and connect with other students on campus.
by that logic, it meant the system believed you and lohen would get along with each other and were highly compatible.
the algorithm they're using must be outdated, you believe, if they put you with lohen of all people.

the name leaves a bittersweet taste on your tongue, reminding you of the childhood you once had with him until everything fell apart.
the both of you used to play in the fields behind his house when it was dark, catching fireflies and gazing at the stars. you'd stay there until dawn and then sneak back into your house through the window, with lohen waving you goodbye as he rushed back home as well.
a younger you would always look forward to when lohen knocked on the door, politely asking your parents for permission to play with you before throwing all decorum out of the way and dragging you out by the arm when they agreed. as he got older, he stopped asking and just waited by your bedroom window with his arms held out, telling you to jump down and he'd catch you.
"that boy is as unpredictable as can be." your mother would sigh. yet she never once forbade you from hanging out with him.
perhaps it was bound to happen, a given even with how much time you were spending with lohen, but you fell for him at the age of fourteen. from there, not only was he your best friend, lohen became your first love.
the fairytales you used to read as a child, where a knight would fall in love with a princess, suddenly meant so much more to you, your young, naive, foolish mind imagining that you were the princess and lohen was your knight.
you'd dream of a precious romance, one untainted by the struggles of reality and adulthood, one where you and lohen would skip off into the sunset together and live out a happily ever after together.
yes, it was childish for a girl your age back then, but it was your whole world. that's how much lohen meant to you. it's why you spent another two years pining after him before you finally decided to confess in the fields both of you so dearly loved.

it isn't hard to spot lohen amidst the sea of students, leaning casually against a pillar and scrolling on his phone. you spent more than half your life with him after all. you don't approach him immediately, opting to stand a distance away to observe.
visually, he hasn't changed much. still the same murky green hair, bored expression, the singular mole underneath his right eye. the only difference is that the baby fat around his cheeks has slimmed down and he's gotten taller, along with the dagger piercing on his left ear.
you curse your heart for picking up speed when lohen finally notices you.
he smiles at you, all smug and a hint of something you don't dare name as fondness. you shuffle over to him.
"hey."
"hi."
you shoot him a confused glance as lohen opens his arms, as if expecting you to do something.
"what are you doing?"
he tilts his head at you innocently.
"aren't you gonna hug me?"
"no? why would i do that?"
"you used to greet me with a hug when we were kids. you don't remember?"
the audacity of this guy. does he still think the both of you are on good terms to ask for a hug from you? how shameless can he get?
"we're not kids anymore. i'm not hugging you."
lohen only shrugs and crosses his arms in response. a minute of silence passes before you clear your throat and speak up.
"you said you had an explanation."
you watch as he nods and digs around in his bag, pulling out an envelope that has definitely seen better days. lohen offers it to you as you stare in disbelief.
the edges are torn, the envelope itself is crumpled beyond repair and there's even a red-brownish stain that you hope isn't dried blood on a corner.
"...what is this?"
"your explanation. anyways, i have a class to get to. don't be a stranger alright?"
with that, lohen brushes past you, leaving you stunned to process the whole interaction.

He fucking adores rabbits.
Big ones, little ones, ones with small ears and ones with floppy ears; if it's a rabbit, he will stop at nothing to pet it. Cats are nice, and so are dogs, but there's just something about a bunny he can't help but adore.
Which makes it all the more hilarious when he decided to introduce you to his 'most ferocious allies.'
"Okay, okay, now...try not to freak out, they can smell fear~" lohen chuckled lowly as he led you through his darkened office, feeling helplessly for the long forgotten lightswitch.
"Alright, just let me turn on the light- ack!" You stumble as a table oh so rudly struck you for existing within the shared space.
"Whoops! Sorry, my love!" Lohen finally released his grip on your hand to switch on the lights, at last illuminating the room, "over here, they're waiting for us!"
You rub the back of your leg, shooting a spiteful glance at that infernal table. Thank goodness lohen kept his weapons in storage instead of carelessly laying about, or this trip would've ended in a hospital visit.
Then again, it still might.
Lohen had not been very...descriptive when it came to these 'mysterious allies' of his. The excitable man simply said they were his 'greatest and fluffiest soldiers under his command,' as if that was enough to explain why he stole you away from an important meeting with the other captains.
To say you were curious was understandable. To say you were afraid was an understatement.
Lohen ran to the small cage on his desk, which was occasionally thumping about as whatever was inside jostle the crate with its rapid movements.
"And now, I present to you the most fearsome of beasts in Mondstadt...VIOLA!"
Lohen yanked the cloth off the cage with a flourish, revealing much to your excitement- and ease- two big, fluffy rabbits. One with black spots and another covered in thick, ebony fluff.
"Meet Doomfanger and Soul Stealer!" Lohen grinned as he let the two fluff balls out of their cage. Doomfanger scratched at his spots, while Soul Stealer cautiously hopped closer toward you.
You couldnt stop yourself once brought face to face with the 'fluffy menaces' especially as Doomfanger ran up along lohens arms. "Oh my archons, they're so cute!"
Soul Snatcher rested his head in your palm as you scratched behind his ears, it seemed he was more sociable than his brother.
"I know, can you believe I found them in the cellars. Destroyed our cabbages, but I didn't like those anyways." Lohen let Doomfanger climb up on his head, allowing the gentle beast to rest on his perch.
"You are the cutest fluff ball I've ever seen, how are you real!?" The cuteness aggression was overtaking your senses, though, it seemed Soul Snatcher was already used to this treatment.
He was lohens pet after all.
You followed the bunnies to the floor, watching Doomfanger overtake Soul Snatcher in combat, while one was far fluffier, one was far stronger than the other.
Lohen picked up Doomfanger and set the bunny on the floor, Soul Snatcher quickly joined as the two began to wrestle. " trained them with some of the gaurd dogs, now they're the perfect gaurds! As long as they get their treats!"
"Why do you have to keep them locked in here? I've literally never seen these two before. They're so precious!"
"Well, I didn't think you'd like them. So I didn't wanna show them to you until I knew you could handle them, And they wouldn't bite you. So, i put one of your sweaters into their crate so theyd get used to your smell. Soul Snatcher took to you quickest! And as for the cage...."
Heavy footsteps rang through the long halls as a familiar, exhausted, voice echoed after the clanking of metal. Unconsciously, you stood at attention for the Grandmaster.
"Lohen for the last time you can't keep running out of meetings just for 'a quick missi-'
Varka stood frozen in the doorway, as he watched Doomfanger sniff the air, as if checking for nearby prey. Soul Snatcher began to thump his legs against the floor aggressively, they Had indeed found something interesting.
Lohen snickered as the bunnies prepared to pounce on their prey, snickered as Varka let the papers he was holding fall onto the ground.
"Last time I let them wander, they turned Varka into a chew toy~"
Lohen pointed a finger towards the Grandmaster, finally granting a command to his menacing soldiers. "Go my children, KILL!"
Varka took a step back from the door, never letting his gaze escape the rabbits. With each step he took back, the rabbits took one forward. While Doomfanger had sharper teeth, Soul Snatcher was the quicker runner.
"Nice B-bunnies, good bunnies...lohen call them off or I'm docking your pay."
The rabbits lunged forward, chasing after the frightened Grandmaster down the hall. The sounds of their little footsteps drowned out by the rapid clanking of metal.
"No, NOT AGAIN! NEVER AGAIN!"
Lohen ran after the two bunnies, laughing joyfully while leaving you the choice to follow or to find him during his future punishment in Solitary once the Grandmaster remembered he was far larger and stronger than those 'killer bunnies.'
lohen, who basically throws himself to the wolves anytime you’re upset at him to take his mind off of you. who genuinely loses his mind thinking about how desperately he misses your touch or voice, the wild hunt only serving as a dummy to burn his frustration and anxieties.
lohen, who is sweetly manipulative. who offers praise in a condescending manner, disguising his words with concern and affection, making it difficult to pull away from or distance from him. weaponized concern mhm.
