I learned to listen for what wasn’t being said, because it was usually more important than what was.

Paradoxical as it may seem, the purposeful life has no content, no point. It hurries on and on, and misses everything. Not hurrying, the purposeless life misses nothing, for it is only when there is no goal and no rush that the human senses are fully open to receive the world.
Alan Watts (via thecalminside)

We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.
Herman Melville (via thecalminside)
You know how every now and then, you have a moment where your whole life stretches out ahead of you like a forked road, and even as you choose one gritty path you’ve got your eyes on the other the whole time, certain that you’re making a mistake.

Mom's memorial service is tomorrow, probably a small gathering of a few of her friends and family. I am told that there will be singing, not by me. Her ashes are on their way to be put to rest and everything involving her apartment has been taken care of. Most of her things were given to charity. I feel like this last week has been the most difficult so far, but I am not really sure why; there is no need to attempt explanation. Tonight, after a very long but good day, we relax quietly at home with beer and bacon, in preparation for things to come.
