IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE (2000) Dir. Wong Kar-Wai
ok so in the mood for love kind of sparked a teensy bit of a depressive spell that culminated in 2am hugging myself and crying on the floor of my bedroom so I'm kind of forced to retroactively bump it to 5 stars
2026 book 25 - Mason & Dixon
Yeah I'm back on the Pynchon, which is why it's been 18 fucking days. Honestly, I probably shouldn't be reading these long ass novels given I've barely read anything this year but hey the heart wants what it wants.
Anyway, generally good. As with French Lieutenant's Woman, I love the idea of writing old novels stylistically whilst being able to utilise modern/postmodern archetypes. However, m&d is a) written a la 18th century which I care for less than the 19th and b) it's kind actually nothing like f.l.w. because the spin it puts on it isn't cool meta it's just Pynchonian dithering. So yknow not that good.
Still, this is probably the least Pynchon-y Pynchon I've read. It keeps the conspiracy aspects to a more fun batshit aspect than all encompassing paranoia and it has a more fun frame to its narrative* which allows it to stay about as straightforward as Pynchon can gets. I'm conscious of how much I'm saying his name right now.
*as explained by John Krewson, "while this might be an epic story, it's an epic story told to wide-eyed children who are up past their bedtime."
If you like 18th century writing read this if not then don't because it's nigh on 800pages/10
but yknow still form your own opinions. honestly I don't even like the do/don't recommend scale because reading a book is always a good experience. I never regret reading one
double feature of me just spouting my opinions tonight because I've finally finished the book I've been reading for (does some maths) 18 days
anyway, just watched In the Mood for Love...I too am quite repressed in the romance department and holy shit this film is incredibly sad. It's a bit slow for me to get into proper but I can appreciate the everyday feeling ambience it gives to some very powerful moments of yearning, because as Chow says these feelings do just creep up on you out of nowhere in life. #repressedrepresentation
did kinda just make me want to read prufrock again though. absolutely no repressed love story can hold a fucking candle to that poem
just watched a matter of life and death. one of my mother's favourites - I've posited to her the four favourites thing amidst conversation previously and this was really the only one she could think of.
I understand why. It's incredibly shot, edited, and produced*, with some very charming performances (the whole 100 odd minutes is worth it to just watch Marius Goring. "One is starved for technicolour up there" is easily my favourite line in this) with a sentiment so sweet and pure even my somewhat cynical self couldn't stand to label it sappy. Cool in premise, great in practice.
*adding this as a caveat like idk 20 minutes after first writing this - when i say this, I mean it is insanely well made. seriously, the effects and look of this is amazing
what they DONT tell you about clarinets is that you have to fucking build the damn thing every single time. "what instrument do you play" fucking legos man idk
about build clarinets damn do DONT every fucking fucking have idk instrument is legos man play" single tell that the they thing time. to what "what you you you
I really need to start reading the blog name because I thought I was having some sort of moment right there.
my letterboxd activity (and indeed watchlist) does make me look like a wanker that's just scrolled through the BFI sight and sound poll (which is exactly what I did) but gang it turns out the films a lot of people say are very good are in fact very good
just watched moonlight. very good film. a heartbreaking depiction of personal struggles within intersectionality whilst finding peaceful moments of connection and bliss. absolutely gorgeous as well
the cici's pizza mr pibb hits different
could you make up some more words please :)

Blasting girls in their 20s with my MILFification ray gun. The effect is slow and gradual, but irreversible. In one to ten years they'll all be in their 30s.
