Sitting Everywhere

I'm midway through my third week in New Orleans. I did some touristy things while my friend was here like visit the aquarium, the zoo (which was way more awesome than the aquarium), and had some good eats at La Boulangerie, Cochon, and Superior Seafood.

Last summer I was here for 18 days. This trip is 40 days and I have very much settled in to the rental home. My fridge is full and I get a lot of sleep because there isn't too much sunlight coming in through the windows. In fact, there haven't been too many overly sunny days lately because of the stormy weather. When it gets cloudy, it makes it easier to walk rather than take the bus.

I had a friend over for a late lunch/early dinner. I grilled some chicken and made salsa, beans, and rice. The tortillas I bought were disgusting. I mean, they're edible, but they just are not the kind of quality I expect. Anyway, I'm not sure if he enjoyed the meal but it's a big deal to me to cook for someone, let alone share my private time. We hung out for a bit and then he was on his way.

Sometimes I'll sit on the couch and do crosswords. I'll sit in the reading chair and fuck around on my laptop. I'll sit on the back porch and drink coffee. I'll sit in the rocking chairs on the front porch and watch dogs get walked. When I get too lonely or bored, I'll take the bus down to the coffee shop and sit around for an hour or two. I'll walk a few blocks and let the sweat trickle down my neck. I watch the little lizards eat mosquitos (yesterday I was given two different descriptions more precise than "lizards" and I don't remember which one I was supposed to use).

Whenever I start to feel like I don't deserve this time off, I remind myself of the intensity of work during the school year and how every fucking day this past school year was heavy with some issue we weren't fully equipped to address.

I welcome the thunder and lightning.
