Seeing people claiming they hate woke trying to say God of War Laufey is not woke is so funny to me. My guys, GoW has been woke since 2018. The core theme of the game is telling Kratos it’s okay to not be a massive macho angry dickhead and his son literally was teaching him to get in touch with his emotions. This is very much against the core patriarchal social rules. Laufey being a badass mum who is equal to her husband in every way is against this. Hell, Kratos basically falls in love with her because that woman used to wield the Leviathan Axe and she sure as hell knows how to use it. Bro isn’t there going ‘damn, that woman will bear my child and do my laundry’, he looked at her and went ‘that woman can beat me senseless and that’s hot’. He was an absent father due his own fears and self-hatred, and the journey that helped him through it was his son going ‘it’s okay to feel things, dad.’

Like what does woke slop even mean? There are 1000s of male led stories and many that has fantastic writing and great characterisations, just as much as the awfully written slops. Because that is the nature of art. Anything can be done well. There is no such thing as woke slop. All that word ever means is to be aware of social injustice taken from AAVE if I remembered correctly. Now it has been hijacked to mean nothing. The picking and choosing what is ‘woke’ is the part that pisses me off the most. It became a word people used to label something they don’t understand as bad. And it’s something they don’t understand that has no effects on them as well. Like at least half the population has no idea how it feels to be a man yet we can recognise a good male led story when we see one, and these idiots throws tantrums because one aspect of the game includes nonbinary or trans person (see Dragon Age Veilguard. That game has its criticisms, but good luck finding comments of someone actually addressing the actual flaws and not ‘BUT TAASH IS UGLY’ or omg how dare they allow people to have top surgery scar option in an rpg game with custom character creation! And people just believe it. Like the amount of post a year or two later of people finally trying the game and is like oh the game is actually pretty okay but they believed the bs when the game came out made me want to pull my hair out) but will try to bend themselves backwards to claim something is not woke when it’s their favourite franchise and that stance is suddenly shaken.

#veilguard has its many issues from studio inteferance induced dev hell #but to claim that it is not a victim of stupid culture war bs is very disingenuous imo #and watching people trying to go ‘BUT GOD OF WAR NORSE NOT WOKE’ has been an experience #and they are suddenly okay with women taking the lead in this particular game because ‘IT’S NOT WOKE’ but will pull bullshit with others #the hypocrisy really gets me #it’s why I rarely take people’s word that they are an ally anymore I prefer actions

I’m all for “writers deserving of having their boundaries respected” but this is so funny to me and like the funniest part is that I don’t think it’s even grounded in reality. like, how are you going to require proof that your readers are in your specific age range? why does it matter to you how old your readers are??? they are???? strangers???? why do you care? how does it affect you? 😭

but to be fair, this is some shit I did when I was 12 and thought I was edgy too. so I get it.

I tried distracting a vampire by throwing rice at him, but I only had two grains with me so it didn't work. He counted them instantly. Then he asked me what I was even doing with exactly two grains of rice, and I explained how a bowl of rice tastes better if you spread it out over an entire day. I asked him if he was gonna suck my blood but he said no, he just had a lot more questions about the rice thing.

This would have contexualise so much of why Neyrelle went off on her own. I don’t know why they never address this during the story. It also fits with how everyone has been dealing with the prophecy as well.

I watched both the intro and the gameplay trailer of God of War Laufey, and I have THOUGHTS.

The reservations: previous games’ core emotional story is about the acceptance of death and moving on. Faye knew she will die and there is nothing she could do about it, hence why she made all those guidance for her husband and son as best she could before passing on. Both Kratos and Atreus had to deal with that and move on from her death. So her waking up panicking saying she has to go back is a bit like ??? I can see her coming to a realisation of OH FUCK I CAN GO BACK and choose to do so. But jumping there immediately feel very antithetical to the themes of what has been set up. The dialogues also felt so so awkward so far. HOWEVER and this is a big HOWEVER, that is the demo and the not the full game. So it is very likely that many things was streamlined to avoid as much spoilers as possible. And that is fair so I won’t fully judge the game based on that.

But also why why why do games love to violently beat women up to show she is strong. Like as in continuous physical violence, not just something as a part of a combat or scenes with physical confrontation. Like Kratos is the poster boy for violent rages and bro has never been beat up to this extent so graphically within 5 minutes of a scene. Like helplessly beaten the fuck up. It feels so unnecessary. It’s why I had such a hard tome with the modern Tomb Raiders game like the game is just Lara getting beaten the fuck up and violently injured. It’s not a ‘this can happen if you fuck up’ which happens to all genders in games, but in cutscenes and weaved in story. The two previous games has successfully showed us she is not a woman to be messed with and she wasn’t even in them. Why.

For a more fun part THE COMBAT LOOK SO SICK OMFG I AM EXCITED. Also the other gods of war? And their designs? Very hyped. Ares needs to be there. Laufey should get to punch him. In the face. Athena, too. PUNCH THEM FAYE.

I also love that little moment she saw Kratos helping her up. It’s so sweet. I have been waiting so long for an action game where a woman takes the lead and the male love interest is the one as the passive emotional support. And especially with Kratos’s story already done and over where she was that for him previously kinda, it makes this feels like and equal relationship and I am all for it. I genuinely love their relationship.
