Earlier this year, my dear friend Eve invited me to contribute to the third issue of her amazing magazine - The Ideology. She even said I could add in an illustration if I wanted to. Of course, I was a little nervous. But because Eve showed me so much love and support, and honestly it was such fun collaborating with her and getting feedback from her, I persevered on. It was also quite the reprieve from the crazy semester I was having. And viola! . In my piece, I wrote about the anxieties of trying to do good and be a good person. Often we’re overwhelmed all the issues of the world (or the bit that we know), by the labels we carry, and the expectations that come with them. We feel pressure and sometimes unknowingly pressure others to engage in discourse in ways that feel forced. I encourage everyone to take part in whatever cause or movement, but not necessarily in ways that make you feel like you’re losing a sense of who you are. If you sing, sing. If art is your thing, make art. If rallies are your thing, go for it. If it’s all about talking to people, do that. If it’s a mix of everything, do that. There is no one way to be a good person or to do good… or to be (insert specific label here like feminist). I applaud you for trying to leave the world a better place than how you found it, but don’t destroy yourself in the process. What good does that do then? . The Ideology is available at BooksActually! Both online and in stores. Issue 3 looks at the struggles of growing up and reconciling with yourself. Check it out here!
I have always been focused on moving away from a consumerist-individualism that is innate in capitalism. While recognising that there are deliberate distractions and governmental narratives in creating the idea of who we are as individuals and collective citizens, it is also important to start questioning our own pursuit of self. The idea of who we want to become and what we want to be can be true ideals of our own construction, but that is often tied in with other merits from global capitalism and the consumerist hegemony.
could i get one of your comics as a tattoo?
Yes but maybe show me a photo after? :-)
Depression is a lot more than just feelings of sadness. I think a lot of people often under estimate how serious and debilitating it can be. It wasn’t as simple as how mental awareness brochures put it across. For me, it was a deep sense of loss and fragmentation and I was too much in pain to see myself as a whole being. There was lack of fulfilment and despair, that despite being alive I didn’t feel alive I just felt tired and heavy. There has been an increase in the number of suicides in recent years. I know that there are tons of awareness going around and suicide hotlines available. But I hope that other than sharing these resources, if you can, please just try to reach out to anyone around you that might be struggling. It could be school, work or family. Someone whom is struggling to keep in contact with you. Someone who you might have not seen in a while. Anyone. Often people suffering from depression they don’t have the ability to call for help, what we can do is try to make ourselves open and available and let them know that there’s someone here if they need. I love you all very much, please take care.
