Merrick closed her eyes, as if that would keep the room from spinning around them. It was - a lot. A lot to take in, a lot to process. Drugs, whatever - they all did them, and it wasn’t like she hadn’t been spending a lot of her nights at the Motel 6 off the highway with Lulu and some other girls and some very questionable Marine boys with a pill in her pocket or a joint in her hand. And selling drugs - she knew Frankie did it from time to time, to keep some steady cash influx, and really, she didn’t care about it except that -
If her parents found out, she could just feel her mothers judgement. The cloud of grey that would come over her fathers face, because he’d always liked Ethan. More than her mother, at least. And the condescension, and the muttering, and how if she had just stayed with Logan she wouldn’t be associated with any of this.
But her breath admittedly stopped when he told her about Holly. For a moment, the room was completely upside down, her stomach rolling, and she was worried she might throw up. But then she opened her eyes to see him - Ethan, worried sick, and she knew that he would have never given Holly anything had he known about her problem. If she had confided in him that she was worried about her sister at the time, that her sister was an addict and that she shouldn’t ever be given any drugs, much less pills, because it could send her in a downward spiral.
She knew Ethan. And Ethan would never be able to live with himself if she was angry about it.
“Okay,” she let out, her breath shaky, but she held her hand out, hoping he’d reach for it. And he seemed hesitant, but he wrapped his fingers around hers and she tugged him towards her, until he was sitting next to her and he could burrow his face against her collarbone, her fingers threading gently through his hair.
"What do we have to do this weekend? To get you out? And before you even say I’m not coming, I am. Because I can not be here. I can not be around them right now because it’s stressing me out and yeah, I would much rather have a quiet weekend at the cabin with you and my DVD collection and scrabble, but whatever. We’re going to get you out. What do they want, money? I can pay them off. If you want out, we’ll figure it out.”
“I’m sorry,” he breathed, the weight of it feeling just a little less heavy. “I didn’t mean to lie or make excuses to not see you or anything... I just... I’d promised Amelia at first and then it had gone on too long and...”
She stroked his hair softly with her free hand, the one holding his gripping tighter. Not running away. Pulling him closer even.
“I have to drive a car down to Florida. It’s going to be full of all kinds of shit and once it’s empty... I don’t know what I’m bringing back but they didn’t make it sound like it was just money.”
“Okay,” she whispered, her voice soft in his ear. “That doesn’t seem so bad. And then you’re done?”
“He said... he just wants to make sure that I don’t snitch. So he’s going to beat the shit out of me, I’m sure. And then if I ever did, he said it wouldn’t be me he’d come after.”
“I can’t risk bringing you with me,” Ethan said and she stopped stroking his hair and dropped his hand, pushing him away from her. “Merrick-”
“No!” she yelled. Loud and full volume, her angry tears finally spilling out. “Ethan Jenkins, you do not get to leave me behind. Not for this. Not after months of lying and sneaking around and now you tell me that you’re definitely committing some kind of felony this weekend to get out of this- this- fucking mess you made! And you think you’re doing it alone?”
“Merrick, did you not just hear me say they’re going to go after-”
“I don’t care! You’re not going alone!”
He’d never been able to watch her cry. And he’d made her cry before but this seemed to be the worst somehow. Maybe because he was that fucking selfish that he couldn’t really fight her on this. Because he was that fucking useless to not admit that he didn’t want to do this alone either.
“I have to,” he whispered but very quickly added, “at least for the last part. You can’t come with me to finish this with them.”
“You’re going to get hurt-”
“And I can’t let them see you and decided to hurt you instead!” And about this, he was serious. That part he’d do alone. He knew she’d be easily found if they wanted to find her. He knew they probably already knew exactly who she was. But that didn’t mean he had to hand her to them at the last minute.
“You can not and will not be there for that part,” he said. “Even if I have to tell Logan to take care of you, I will.”
“But... you’ll need me,” she said, sounding small and defeated but he could also tell she knew he was right.
“Yeah,” he said, pressing his forehead to hers. “But I need okay first. Okay?”
She sucked in a deep breath, the reached for his hand again, squeezing tightly. For the first time in months, Ethan felt something fall back into place. Something right, something strong and centered. “Okay. I hate this but... okay.”
It was almost over. But he still had Merrick. And that was the only thing that actually mattered.
