Outrage! Duck Dynasty Debacle
Dear outraged Christians and Duck Dynasty fans. Relaaaaaax buddy. Stop making me want to quit the internet. It is good to stand up for something, especially your beliefs, yay! This is dumb however and grandstanding this issue is ridiculous. Having faith is wonderful and beliefs are important, and if you want to sit on your porch and tell your buddy "I don't get butt sex because Jesus" no one is going to stop you. The only problem is that in modern North America this concept is becoming less acceptable.
First off it's a TV show, and no ones rights to free speech are being trampled. There is a contract and money and in exchange cast members are expected to be ambassadors for a show and when a stance is taken by one of those cast members that conflicts with the companies (their bosses) philosophies, their are consequences.
BUT, clearly this is not the big issue. Why is it wrong to talk about your beliefs? That's the big slap in the face right? Time to grow up and get used to it because things change and they always have.
If Phil said "Gee I sure liked it better when women had to be silent" most people would exclaim "Excuse me??" with much sassiness and disdain. Apparently silence for women was the advice of St Paul in Timothy 2:12
If Phil had said "Man I would love to have some black slaves now that i have all this money" there is a good chance he would be murdered with much sass. And yet the bible at one point condoned the ownership of another human being and encouraged enforcing those roles.
These are vignettes into different time periods where at that time, something that is now considered bad, was totally acceptable. I'm not suggesting that Phil thinks women should be subservient and is ok with slavery, but not that long ago, a man with strong belief would and did think that way.
A&E are distancing themselves from a belief that is archaic and actually hurtful to other people that we share our world with. It's that simple.
The pope still does not like same sex marriage, But he has said "If someone is gay and seeks the Lord with good will, who am I to judge?'”
Having a belief is one thing, but justifying it is another. If the pope can undue his belt by a notch maybe you can to.
