Obsessed with this year's grand prize winner of the Bulwer Lytton Fiction Contest
2022 Grand Prize Winner
"I knew she was trouble the second she walked into my 24-hour deli, laundromat, and detective agency, and after dropping a load of unmentionables in one of the heavy-duty machines (a mistake that would soon turn deadly) she turned to me, asking for two things: find her missing husband and make her a salami on rye with spicy mustard, breaking into tears when I told her I couldn't help—I was fresh out of salami."
Since 1982 the Bulwer Lytton Fiction Contest has challenged participants to write an atrocious opening sentence to the worst novel never written. Our whimsical literary competition honors Sir Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, whose 1830 novel Paul Clifford begins with “It was a dark and stormy night.”
My personal all-time favorite is the grand prize winner of 2019:
Space Fleet Commander Brad Brad sat in silence, surrounded by a slowly dissipating cloud of smoke, maintaining the same forlorn frown that had been fixed upon his face since he’d accidentally destroyed the phenomenon known as time, thirteen inches ago.

if you have old spotify wrapped playlists saved, put your #1 song from every year in the tags, i’m curious
Taylor swift
I mean goths can listen to Taylor swift lol it's not really a requirement to be into butt rock or a genre that can so easily sound like tv static if you don't put some sort of song chaser in your playlist
it is in fact a requirement to be into at least some form of goth music if you want to call yourself goth
Melanie Martinez wishes she was Grimes. Grimes wishes she was Bjork. Bjork wishes she was 2 inches tall so she could go inside the computer and have a big adventure
As a lesbian i will always relate more to trans women than cishet women. Made to feel disgusting and predatory in women's spaces? Check. Berated and mocked for our relation to sexuality and womanhood? Check. Hated for our "deviancy from the norm"? Check. Every single essay about womanhood by a trans woman--and especially, especially by trans wlw--has spoken more to me than anything written by a cis straight woman ever could. T*rfs can take that to the bank.
also, may I add because it's not just the negative stuff. there's so much positive connection:
gender euphoria experiences with a self determined approach to womanhood, attraction and sexuality
celebration of bodies beyond the norm
creating our own culture of appreciating complex and intertwined expressions of gender and sexuality
destigmatization and newfound respect of and for our bodies
true sisterhood based on choice not force
the inherent revolutionary nature of our existence and our love and community
creating space for exploration of pleasure and identity
These posts were fundamental in my coming out as a woman and hopefully someone else will see them and see the overflowing love and acceptance that is waiting for them too.

More places need to start hosting "goth nights" to boost turnout. Goth night at the bowling alley, goth night at the mini golf, goth night on the local public radio station, goth night at the antiques store, the library, oil change, laundromat, tea shop, etc etc. I am correct.
FOR THE BETTER!
everyone always talks about setting boundaries with other people, but we need to talk about setting boundaries with yourself. it can be things as simple as, "I'm not going to work past 8 because I need to unwind before bed" or "I'm going to go on a daily walk because it's good for my mental health." But it can also be things like, "I'm not going to talk to this person anymore because it's bad for me" or "I refuse to settle for this because I know my worth." when you learn what is healthy for you and what you want out of this life, embrace it. give yourself guidelines that will help you grow.
