Jack who at first refused to believe his daughter had schizophrenia. He was in complete denial even if he saw something was wrong with Amy. Nightmares only in the morning. Dissociation. Growing distant with everyone. Talking about conversations that never happened... But he just told himself she was disturbed. All kids would be after loosing their mother.

But one day an ambulance parks in the bay and his daughter comes out of it. Screaming. Trashing. Crying. A neighbor called 911 because she was yelling her lungs out. The only things that kept him sane are his familiarity with adrenaline and military training. There's blood on the side of her face and down her neck. He tries to calm her down so they can figure out where the blood is coming from, but she doesn't listen. Like she can't hear him, like she can't recognize him. Eventually they have to sedate her. She isn't severely injured so Jack immediately thinks about what could've put her in that state. Infection. Epilepsia. Drugs. Neurological trauma. Parkison. But he refuses to think about psychiatric problems. He refuses to, even when all his potential diagnoses are proved wrong.

He yells at Robby when he brings up a potential mental disorder. His daughter is fine. She's just affected by grief. His son is already closely monitored by mental health professionals for severe depression. His second child has to be okay. He can't have failed to protect both of them. He bargains for three hours before being coaxed to let her see someone else than ER staff.

Amy who always wins when the service bets on something, so much that some people started to think she has blackmail on Ahmad.

Amy who has a beef with every single surgeon. Walsh because she always contradicts Jack diagnoses, Garcia because of her situationship with Trinity and Park the Shark because 'who the fuck does he think he is ?'.

Amy who ragebaits her dad with Shen for fun.

Amy who is friends with everyone in the ED and will die with their secrets so she knows everything in the service but no one realizes it. The gossips she has would make Princess and Perlah seem like amateurs compared to her.

Amy who always manages to get tickets to any concert. One day Trinity complained that her favorite artist's concert was sold out, and the next morning Amelia came back with two tickets.

Amy who goes to a boxing club with Emma and Trinity every Tuesday and Thursday. And the nurse is actually pretty good at it.

Amy who is the first to encourage and praise you but also won't be the last to tell you when you fuck up.

Amy who as a joke, makes a goofy smile and says 'They're friend' when a person with any kind of dementia steps into the ED.

Calleb who is called the 'black cat' in the ER not only because of his hair color but also because he always brings the worst / weirdest cases ever.

Calleb who becomes friends with every intern in 10 minutes, which drives his sister and father nuts.

Calleb who lifts Amy and carry her around in the service to make Robby and Dana laugh on bad days.

Calleb who gets flirted with by everyone against his will, his girlfriend finds it hilarious and she just lets him struggle his way out.

Calleb who is so bad with technologia everyone makes fun of him about it.

Calleb who loves to act like he doesn't like his sister's food to piss her off, but deep down he would give his firstborn for any of her soups.

Calleb who has a kind of profiler talent. He always manages to deduce someone's love life, mental state and tastes, which terrifies Robby.

Calleb who got Robby's/Adamson's mantra 'I love you - Thank you - I forgive you - Please forgive' tattooed on the side of his thigh and only Amy and his girlfriend know about it.

Calleb and Amy who genuinely think Robby and their father should be together and had a bet about it years ago.

Robby slowly, with zero fanfare or discussion or even much thought on his own part, starts adapting his home and his life around Jack. Shower stools appear in both walk-in showers, and eventually grab bars, too, bc why not. It’s a simple thing to do, and then Jack can shower at Robby’s without hassle or the risk of a fall. Makes sense, he thinks. It’s what friends do.

Jack’s got a pair of spare crutches at Robby’s place, but Robby notices the balms and creams Jack likes best. Might as well keep some on hand in the bathroom, and maybe over by the couch, too. Just for convenience, of course.

Robby calls ahead to restaurants to be sure they’re appropriately wheelchair accessible—not just a ‘check the box’ ADA activity—bc maybe it’ll be a wheelchair kind of night out, and if he can help it, Robby will never let Jack relive the experience of having to use an outdoor freight elevator to reach second floor seating.

It’s a myriad of little things Robby does instinctively, because it’s for Jack, who’s always on Robby’s mind. Who Robby believes deserves the world. Who sees something in Robby that is hard for Robby to see in himself.

Who rolls his eyes fondly when Robby hands him a packet of research Robby’s done on phantom pain relief, before pulling Robby into a wildly unexpected, but desperately wanted, kiss. A soft thank you pressed against Robby’s lips.

Amy never told anyone that her mother had passed away. People just already knew or were not close enough to be told about that tragic part of her life. As much as she loved the interns and residents, most of them didn't stay long enough to become real friends. So they just thought Evelyn Abbot worked a lot or didn't like hospitals.

But sometimes life pushes you into paths you never thought you would walk on. And Amelia ends up talking about her mother's death to the Pittlings.

The first to know is Mel. Despite trying her best to have a day off on her parents' death anniversary, she has to work that day. She manages to make it to 4 pm until breaking down. Amy finds her ugly crying in the staircase after 20 minutes. She slowly sits down next to her and hugs her tightly. Jack's daughter asks in a whisper what's going on, Mel takes 5 minutes to manage out a stuttered answer and Amy softens even more. She tangles their fingers together and tells the doctor what she does to soothe her nerves when grief gets too great. Melissa frowns in confusion with wet eyes. It takes a few seconds for the words to come out "My mother died... when I was 11." She doesn't break down saying it, she doesn't cry or shake but she squeezes Mel's hands a little tighter. "But my dad's really great so... we could share him... I'm sure Calleb won't mind." That coaxes a soft laugh from the resident.

Then comes Victoria. Not that she's closer to her than the others. In fact, there's way more connection between her and Trinity so also Dennis. But the intern is leaving the ED for the psychiatric department, the same one where Amelia is treated. So on Javadi's last day, she pulls her aside in a 'quiet' corner of the ER. Victoria was smiling until she saw Amy's face. Tight. Tensed. Nervous. "Is everything alright ?" she asks. "Yeah." Jack's daughter exhaled. "As... um... you are now going to... work in psychiatry... you... will learn... a lot of things about me. Things I... don't want you to learn from someone else... because... because you're a person I appreciate." She swallows painfully hard, glancing at the floor nervously. "So first um... I'm schizophrenic. And... my mother's dead." She bluntly states because she knows she won't be able to say anything otherwise. Vic is stunned for a moment before mumbling "I'm so sorry." "It's fine. Really." "No... I... I complain about my mom non-stop." Amelia let's out a surprised laugh. "Well... your mom is shit..." And they both laugh nervously for a whole minute before Victoria takes Amy in a soft embrace.

The next to know are Dennis and Trinity. Amy obviously knew they would ask about her mother when she invited them to horror movie marathon at her house. Jack was on a shift and Calleb stayed for two movies before heading back home. But no signs of Evelyn. On the 4am snack, Trinity asks if Evelyn works on nights like Jack or if she is at a friends house. Amelia freezes, looks at the kitchen table before looking up at the doctor with tensed face and slightly widened eyes. Santos is confused but Dennis just knows. "She... she died when I was 11... cancer."

Samira's the last. Amelia didn't plan to tell her like that. It just happened. She was on edge all day, not quite in crisis but clearly not alone in her head. And then her stomach started to hurt so fucking bad. She insisted it was fine but the resident was determinated to check her out. Amy tried to negociate to have Robby has her doctor but he was in trauma 2 with a teenager that got crushed by a car. So she end up in South 4. The diagnosis wasn't obvious so Samira asks her if she has any medical history in her familly. She quietly says that her mom had cancer. Samira knows she would have heard if a Abbot was being treated for cancer, even if it was the most invisible one, so she asks "When did she get rid of it ?" And without thinking Amy mumbles "It got rid of her"

Frank and Jack looking at Amy and Calleb who are making Dennis laugh after he had the worst shift ever.

"You really raised them well..." the resident says with genuine admiration.

Jack doesn't look at him, he just keeps staring at his children that are now loudly laughing along with Whitaker. There's a small silence before the attending answers with tears in his voice.

"Evelyn did all the work..."

She didn't.

Abbot's anger is a real thing. But it is a myth for all the pittlings and most of the ED staff.

Well of course everyone saw Amy angry. She becomes feral everytime she has a hard time. Say the darkest, humorless and most passive-aggressive jokes or just hits someone when she is down, never an ER worker though. Her anger is coming out less and less over the years but is still easy to witness.

No, the real myth is the father and the son.

Jack may seem scary at first, especially when you know he was a soldier for a long time. But people quickly view him as the cool, funny and collected night shift attending. Well... not the ones that have been working with him for a while, those knows. And Called is a fucking sweetheart. He is smiling almost all the time even if he is a paramedic. How could anyone fear him ?

But one cool summer night. After another long shift, Dennis, Trinity, Mel, Samira, Emma and Amy are talking around shitty bears in the park in front of the ER. They talk about various subjects and at some point Dennis asks THE question 'Who don't you want to get angry at you in the service ?' Everyone debates and gives their opinions. Most people say it's Robby or Dana. Who wants their boss to be mad at them ? But Amy doesn't say anything, she just watches with an unimpressed smile. Then Trinity asks her who she wouldn't piss off. She laughs. 'Obviously my dad.' There is a little silence where the whole group stares at her. The only thing that breaks this silence is Jack calling her out from the ER's entrance. She picks up her bag and add with a casual smile. 'Well... We all already saw Robby angry and trust me yelling is the worst he can do... Dana is mature enougn to not be petty or mean. And for Jack... Never heard about being wary in calm waters ?' And with that she just leaves. None of the Pittlings picks a nightshift in a while after this.

And for the son ? One day Mel heard a paramedic that worked with Calleb say something transphobic to a trans patient. He ever so gently asked her for a private conversation with a tight smile. The same paramedic rushed out of the room ugly crying five minutes later.

They are best friends no matter what and have the deepest conversations at 2 in the morning about mental health, psychology and relationships of all kinds but also about Robby and Langdon.

Amy that takes care off everyone. Every single ED staff member. Because they spend their whole day taking care of people but never care for themselfs.

She cooks most of the time. She gave up trying to make the ER workers eat actual meals during their shifts. But she still cooks huge portions of food packed in individual portions. And lets those in the breakroom's fridge when she picks up her dad in the morning. So everyone can take some back at home. She KNOWS no one has the energy to actually cook after a 15-or more-hour shift 12-hour shift.

She will always make sure there are snacks and pastries in the breakroom. Not just those soulless protein bars.

If you can't eat something because you are allergic / of your religious beliefs / you have a specific diet / you just don't like it. Just tell her. Don't worry. She'll figure it out. She has a full note on her phone with EVERYONE's restrictions / preferences. She even got a fucking group chat where she sends propositions of meals and cakes and they fucking VOTE for what they prefer to have. And if you want something really specific ? She'll do it just for you. But don't ask that too much, uh ? She'll do it anyway but no one tried yet because they know her ex-military, nightshift attending dad is watching.

She does it even for students / residents who don't stay for a long time. You are ER, that's all she needs to know, and she can make your life way easier. Now lasagne or marry me chicken pasta ?

Hell she'll cook what you ask even if it's your first shift. Of course I can do vegetarian spring rolls ! What was your name again ? She definitely got Emma a massive chocolate cake for her second day when she overheard the adorable new nurse got attacked on her first day. And Shen got jealous

But even if she mostly helps with food. That's not the only thing she does.

She would drive a dozen people to their homes after their shift, even if they live an hour away from the hospital.

She would give you advice to help with your sleep because she experienced every single sleep disorder that exists. Breathing techniques / weighted blankets / podcasts with soft voices / recommend a good somnologist she knows.

She comes to comfort anyone no matter what is going on. She doesn't care if you are crying because you got attacked by a patient, because you are overstimulated, because massive unsolved issues in your life or because of your shitty situationship. She'll be here. She'll hug, she'll let you cry it all out, she'll make you laugh and give the best peptalk ever.

She never forgets anyone's big event. Specially not birthdays. Even if some people would prefer her not to. AKA Michael "at some point you get too old to enjoy celebrating your birthday" Robinavitch. But she just grins and gives him his favorite cake.

And when Jack Abbott pulled her aside and tried to get her to slow down and rest she answered him and his rightful heir with a big ass smile "I'll rest when you'll rest."

So the ER staff will stay well fed and care for for a little while.

AU where Jack Abbot had two kids with his wife (Evelyne) before she died. Calleb Nathan Abbot and Amelia Penelope Abbot.

Calleb was 17 and Amelia 11 when their mother passed away from a really aggressive pancreatic cancer.

The three of them kept eachother alive and functionning through grief. And then through the rest...

Because Jack is disabled, has PTSD from the army and suicidal tendencies. Because his mother's death triggered severe depression and anxiety in Calleb. And Because Amelia was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 14.

Jack who let his kids sleep in his bed for 6 months after his wife's death. He claimed it was only to comfort them, but deep down it was also because he was unable to sleep in his wedding bed alone. He never stopped wearing his wedding ring even after 10 years and feels like he is betraying Evelyn every time he tries to live again. He threw himself even harder into his work at the ER and took night shifts as soon as Amelia was mentally stable old enough to be at home alone and forced himself to never commit for his kids. He taught both of them self-defense because he wanted them to be able to protect themself's if he ever became aggressive because of his PTSD they ever got in trouble. Then, when both of his children were old enough to be able to care for him, he aggressively tried to push them away. No, he didn't help with his prosthetic or with his nightmares. One night he argued so hard with Calleb that Amy called Robby crying, but eventually he let them in. Only 3 months later he enlisted as a SWAT physician. His boy told him to be careful with a soft and worried look. His youngest... didn't say anything but the look in her eyes was filled with anger and betrayal. That single look made his skin crawl. But the man feels even worse when Amy has a crisis and he can't do anything about it. His baby girl is panicked and feels threatened and he can't subdue the crisis or make her feel safe. The guilt eats him alive because schizophrenia is a sickness and he is a doctor but he can't heal her. He already lives with the guilt of not being able to save Evelyn. Now his daughter is sick and hurt and terrified and he can't do anything. Jack who lives with the certitude his kids have no idea he is going on the roof on the wrong side of the rail after almost every shift. But Shen broke and told Amy 3 years ago.

Calleb graduated from highschool like nothing happened because he was in bone deep denial for months. But when he saw his mother's chair an empty chair at his graduation, he spent five months swinging between non-stop crying and a catatonic state. One evening, he considered taking his dad's gun to kill the doctors who 'killed' his mother. He slept it off and immediately asked to see a therapist the next morning. He went to therapy and managed to crawl out of the abyss. Now he sees his therapist twice a month and checks on his sister and dad at least three times per day and will have a panic attack if they don't answer in the hour. But he made it through the worst of it and is now a 28 year old paramedic. He took care of himself so now he takes care of his family. He learned how to deal with their anger, learned that it was a cornered animal-like reaction. He makes sure Jack doesn't overwork himself but still lets him work a lot because he knows his mind goes dark when he doesn't have anything to do. He watches Amy from afar and makes sure she doesn't drown while trying to save others because all the people she loves are fucked up. He makes sure his father doesn't go mad when Amy is bad before quietly stepping into her hospital room and calmly reading her a book to ground her. Calleb, who spent most of his adult life living in the family house because he felt like leaving it meant abandoning what was left of his family. But after long, painful discussions, he left for an apartment with his girlfriend only 10 minutes away.

Amelia or "Amy" became extremely clingy after her mother's death. She was already close to her dad but after the worst event of her life she has spent a full year glued to her father's side or in his arms. Then in 7th grade, she claimed to always be in pain so she could come to the ER because she loved the staff ( Robby, Dana, Perlah & Princess, Langon, Jesse, Ahmad... ) and Jack didn't have the strength to fight her. Eventually, she managed to really go to school but she realised something was wrong with her she was special. She could hear demons or what she thought were demons. Voices talking to her non-stop saying things from 'His pants are ugly' to 'He gave mom cancer'. She never said anything because everyone was a threat. And it got worse and worse and worse. Until she tried to burst her own eardrums with a screwdriver to mute the voices. She spent two years in the hospital's psychiatric service 'upstairs'. Now she has a regular, adjusted treatment that has increasingly calmed her hallucinations even if they will never fully disappear and has learned to listen as little as possible. She finished highschool homeschooled with a personal teacher. Teacher that found her scholarships and applied for her to sooo many universities. She got accepted to almost all of them but never went because it meant leaving her father and brother. No one knows about it. She has a strict routine, a halftime job and spends the rest of her time at the Pitt, cooking/baking for the Pitt's staff because she used to cook with her mom she loves it and it keeps her mind busy.

So yeah. The Abbotts are reaaaally fucked up. But they're here for each other and for Robby.
