functionally suicidal character saying “I would die for you” to their significant other and its like. I get the sentiment, honey, but if a hot dog vendor told me he’d sell hot dogs for me, I wouldn’t feel very moved now would I

“Dr. Abbot,” Javadi asks, clearing her throat behind him. He’s just about to leave, eyes still tracking Robby where he’s chatting with Dana.
“Javadi,” he says, finally tearing his eyes away from his husband to look at her. “What can I do for you?”
“Um,” she starts, shifting awkwardly. “I just - do you have a second? I was hoping I could talk to you.”
Jack nods, gesturing for her to lead the way somewhere quieter.
She leads them to the break room, closing the door behind her.
“Everything okay?” He asks, leaning against the counter. He and Javadi have struck up what Robby calls an ‘unlikely bond’ - it’s gotten especially strong after the alley debacle on their night out.
She’s a good kid - desperate for approval and hating that she’s desperate for approval, wanting a role model and only ever getting marching orders from her own parents. She’s come to Jack a few times for advice, and he’s flattered that she trusts him.
“Um, yeah,” she swallows. “Yeah, I just. I don’t know if this is - if I’m like allowed to do this -“
“Javadi,” Jack says patiently.
“- or if it’s like, a problem or a workplace thing or-“
“Javadi.”
“ - but I don’t know what else to do, and I think - I mean I know we joke but you’re obviously not my dad but -“
“Victoria,” Jack says, stepping forward and putting his hands gently on her shoulders, squeezing. “Talk to me, kid. It’s all okay.”
She looks up at him, her eyes wide and scared.
“I think I might be gay,” she blurts, immediately covering her mouth with her hands. Her eyes well.
Jack feels his heart break a little for her, because he knows how scary it is to say those words out loud for the first time.
“Hey,” he says gently, ducking his head to meet her eyes. “Hey, look at me. Is it okay if I give you a hug?”
She nods, immediately pushing forward against his chest. He wraps his arms around her, chuckling softly as he rubs her back.
“Oh kid,” he says softly. “I’ve got you. Thank you for telling me. Have you told anyone else?”
“Just Trin,” she sniffs, hands curled tight in the back of his scrub top. “I was gonna tell Robby first but I didn’t think I’d be able to handle it without crying because he’d give me those big ‘I’m proud of you’ eyes, but turns out I can’t do it without crying no matter who it is.”
Jack laughs, knowing exactly what eyes she’s talking about. Robby is also a sympathy crier - if Javadi had started, Robby would’ve too.
He rubs her arms, gently pushing her back so he can look at her.
“Well, I’m really proud of you too,” he says, smiling softly. “And I’m glad you felt like you could tell me.”
She shrugs, smiling a little as wipes her eyes.
“I just - I wanted to tell like, my parents but I don’t - it’s not… like that, with us.”
Jack nods, sympathetic. He remembers how badly he’d wanted that parental support, that approval from a trusted elder. He never got it.
“Well,” he says, voice gentle but firm. “That’s their loss. And Robby and I are more than happy to stand in, if you want us.”
She gives him a watery smile, hugging him again.
“Thanks,” she whispers, voice muffled against his scrubs.
“Any time, kiddo,” he says, blinking away the burning in his own eyes as she pats her back. “And go easy on Robby if he gets misty eyed, he’s a big softy.”
She laughs, wiping her eyes. “Yeah, world’s worst kept secret.”
Jack laughs. “Hey, you’re the one that picked emotional middle aged gay dads.”
The smile he gets in return is nearly blinding.
Yeah, he thinks. The kids are alright.
well?

Commodore Sir J. Abbot
HMS Pitt
Portsmouth
Jack,
As ever, you spoil me. The latest collection you sent from Montreal replenished my stocks at a crucial time, and the pamphlet on the use of evergreen aneda to treat scurvy proved most enlightening. I am just returned from a trip into the interior to treat survivors of Trelawny Town at Accompong.
Do try your best to retain your moral virtue in between your dashing exploits against the French. I don't intend for you ever to be my very badly-behaved patient again.
Yours in sincerity,
Robby

Rob,
Anticipating the mail packet will get this to you ahead of our arrival - we are ordered to Kingston as the first stop on a cruise to the Pacific, after French privateers. At least three weeks of refreshment before sailing on. Squadron is well-furnished with supplies but not yet, alas, with seasoned men. Flagship in particular is lacking an appropriate surgeon, if you can believe it, despite my usual protestations to the Admiralty.
You would honor me by taking the berth. If circumstances allow the time I will be glad to stop at the Galapagos for you.
Yours in respect and affection,
J Abbot

Guys can you BELIEVE there actually was a ship of the line called Pitt?? She launched in 1816 but never saw service.
The guys are in a very Aubrey-Maturin situation here but the really perfect parallel is Hornblower & Bush, IYKYK.
People can handle evil characters(for the most part--usually they twist their behavior and water it down) but people really can't handle good characters that lose their head or lose themselves and have a moment of fallen grace. Fandom has shown this time and time again. They really look at them as worse than the initial evil.
related but tangential. there's a really strong unexamined belief throughout a lot of fandom -- and population outside of fandom, but we're talking about fandom here -- that what you do and say during your worst moments is who you really are.
And the assumptions underlying this, more or less, break down to:
Everybody is secretly bad deep down. They're born that way (no, this is not original sin, wdym, it's just an Honest and Realistic assessment of human nature!) and have to be taught to cover it up through childhood with facades of politeness. Everybody is lying all the time by pretending to be better or nicer than they really are, and this facade takes active effort to maintain. When the effort drops and the facade slips, the true underlying rottenness shows through.
All actions taken are rational and reasoned, at all times. Lying is always a deliberate, purposeful action meant to advance a person's aims and goals. There is never any reason to lie except to make yourself look good. Therefore, any good or nice statement or action may be a lie, but any bad or harmful statement or action must be true.
Ergo: anything a person (or a character) says or does when in states of emotional extremity, overwhelming grief, incapacitating pain, exhaustion, illness, head injury, is Peeling Back the Facade of Goodness to reveal the True Rottenness Underneath.
This is, of course, utter nonsense. But an amazing number of people seem to believe it.
so embarrassing to watch yourself become obsessed with a character that feels tailor made for you specifically to become obsessed with. feels like i fell into a trap made just for me. like damn they got me. those are all the things i like and go crazy for
Big fan of characters realizing they don't get to die. They have to live. And grow. And be a person. And deal with shit they thought they'd never have to. And be fucked up about it. I would like more of this. Enough dying for honor or as redemption. It ain't. You're just a corpse. There is no moral value in dirt time.
insane to me how, to some people, this is not a common sense
There's this weird tendency among fandom types where they'll take a character, and insist that they are fans of them, before changing their design, age, pronouns, backstory, blood type, species, hometown, favorite color, zodiac sign, medical history, and every other facet of their being.
They will then violently insist that this version is superior to the canon one and act like they "fixed" them and it's like. Buddy that's not the same character anymore. That's just your own oc commiting identity fraud. Like. I get the desire to experiment with different interpretations of a story. But first of all it's okay to just make an original character if that's what you really want to do. And second of all, are you even really a fan of the character you "fixed" if they're a completely different person afterwards?
Like. Idk dude for somebody who claims to be a fan you sure don't seem to like them as they are :/
Gonna remember "buddy that's not the character that's your OC committing identity fraud."
