( ella purnell | cisfemale | she/her) — was that evangeline ‘evie’ macmillan passing through diagon alley? those close to them say they remind them of a pile of books with the edges folded over, late nights spent in the library, wanting to desperately believe in love at first sight, writing things down on your checklist just to cross them off, the smell of the air before it rains, wanting to believe the best in people, they say you’re too fragile for a world this cruel , which i suppose seems to fit that ravenclaw alumnus. they’re actually pretty intelligent, romantic, and idealistic for a twenty-six year old, but i wonder if it serves them well when working as a mediwitch for the st. mungo’s. rumor has it that the pureblood has stayed neutral… for now. i wouldn’t have guessed… but this is a conversation we should be having somewhere else. Part Two
While the Macmillan family can trace their so called ‘pureblood’ ancestry back for centuries, the family has never been believers in blood purity. They are proud of their ancestry, and they are a respectable family, but they do not pride themselves on being elitist. Evie and her siblings were raised to believe in equality and to stand up for the people around them who don’t have as loud of a voice.
Evie grew up in a modest townhouse in Putney, outside of London. The youngest of four children, Evie spent a lot of her time lost in her books while her older siblings played with the neighborhood kids. Her older brother Ernest always teased her for being lost in her books, but Evie just loved reading anything she could get her hands on. She didn’t care about the genre–fantasy, adventure, muggle science fiction, Evie couldn’t get enough of them. Her favorite book genre though, is romance. She loves the predictability of a romance novel, the heroine always gets the guy in the end. She wishes life could be a little bit more like that.
The Macmillan’s house always seemed to be the center of everything with the door opening with siblings and their friends running in, Evie’s father coming in and out for work and meetings, and her mother trying to keep up with four energetic kids. It was always chaotic and busy, but nobody could ever doubt that the family loved each other.
The Macmillan family is perhaps most proud of the fact that every born Macmillan for the last nine generations has found their home in Hufflepuff. Until Evie. The Sorting Hat had barely been placed upon her head before it shouted out Ravenclaw. In her heart, Evie had known that Ravenclaw was where she belonged, but she worried about the reactions of her family. Her father was always so proud of their Hufflepuff line, and she nearly cried herself to sleep with worry that first night at Hogwarts. She hadn’t even been able to face Eleanora and Evander after the sorting ceremony, instead losing herself amongst the blue and silver robes of her new house. But in the morning, Evie realized her worries were for nothing–her parents wrote her a letter expressing how excited and proud they were. Sure, the rest of the family has teased her on and off over the years, but they love her and she knows that.
Evangeline excelled at Hogwarts academically, but socially she has always preferred to keep her circle on the smaller side. A bit of an introvert at heart, she would much prefer to curl up in front of the fireplace with a good book than go to a raging Gryffindor party–although her friends usually drag her out to a party or two. She appreciates the friends and family that bring her out of her comfort zone since she usually won’t push herself on her own.
After graduation from Hogwarts, Evangeline surprised her family and friends when she announced that she wanted to be a Mediwitch. They had been so sure that Evie would go for something traditionally academic like a librarian, or an Arithmancer. The only person that she had told in her circle was her mother, who was a healer herself because she was afraid of disappointing the people around her. But their reaction to her announcing she wanted to be a Mediwitch was mostly positive.
She was inspired to be a Mediwitch partially because of her mother, but also after her father had taken the family to the Quidditch World Cup when she was twelve. One of the players got seriously injured, and it had been one of the scariest things that she had seen in her life. But then the Mediwizards rushed in and healed him, saving his life, and she knew that that was what she wanted to do one day. She just never knew if she had what it took to do so. In her sixth year at Hogwarts, she asked to volunteer in the hospital wing, and from there on out she knew that it was what she wanted to do.
"I know! But we wouldn't want an accident on the way to dinner." He chuckled, happily letting her lead the way into the store, smirking to himself as he watched how excited she got over the idea of a new book. Perhaps any book at all. "Does it count to say Quidditch Through The Ages? I have a soft spot for anything to do with the game but also anything that has animals in it as long as they don't die. That I cannot handle. But to be honest, I don't read that much...unless you've got some suggestions, I never know what to read."
"That would really put a damper on the evening," She agreed with a laugh. "And if I ended up in St. Mungo's? I don't think Ted or Peter would ever let me live it down," she smiled with a shake of her head. She glanced back at him. "Course, a books a book," Evie told him firmly. She finally found the book that she was looking for and looked back at Amos, a slight pout on her lips. "Can you reach it for me?" She asked, gesturing to it. "I think I can get used to this," she smiled as he reached up to get the book for her. "I always have plenty of suggestions. My sister always says that I'm practically an encyclopedia of books," she rolled her eyes but smiled fondly about her older sister. "So if books aren't really your thing, what do you like to do when you need to relax?" She asked him curiously.
❝ mediwitch macmillan , ❞ he repeats back , back immediately straightening now that stevie is no longer left to his own devices in the room . the male was already peeved being forced to come here for such a small injury , so he decides to make the best of the experience for the both of them . ❝ i am practically unscathed , i promise - ❞ stevie promises with his winning smile , raising his left hand that sported several pieces of adhesive to splint the two fingers he'd mistakingly hit against a bludger while at practice just hours ago . in all of his years of playing rough with siblings and being on the field full time , stevie was victim to significantly worse injuries . it just came with the territory - so why was it that he was now forced a visit to st. mungos from their captain with a form of good health ? ❝ all i require is your lovely signature and stamp stating that i will survive a stubbed finger and can return to practice . ❞
Evie was no stranger to Quidditch injuries--half of her job seemed to be tending to players when the Quidditch World Cup was hosted in the area. But as far as Quidditch injuries went, this one seemed fairly mild. And after everything that they had seen lately, Evie was almost grateful for a fairly mild and hopefully quick fix. There was only so many terrible things that she could stand to deal with at work. It was almost a surprise that they had sent him here all things considering. Even still, she was determined to do her job. "It doesn't look serious," she agreed, putting a hand on her hip. "However, let me take a look at it. I'm sure I'll get you out of here in a few minutes, but I'd rather be safe than sorry." She approached him and held her hand out for him to give her the offending hand. "What happened?" She asked.
His life had really gone downhill lately, a lot of sleepless night, and avoiding his townhouse, the only way he was surviving was with a lot of coffee. He had picked up yet another coffee and was still trying to decide how he was going to keep himself busy for the day when he noticed a familiar face at one of the tables. He heard her groan and he couldn’t help but chuckle. “Hey Evie, sorry am I interrupting your book? Do you want me to leave?” he asked as he hovered behind the chair across from her. He knew what it was like to get wrapped up in a good book and need to finish the chapter or the whole thing when you got to a good part. “Oh, me? Just here to keep myself caffeinated, my last one was running low and I think I am mostly caffeine at this point,” he chuckled.
Evie waved his concern away. "No, of course not!" She exclaimed. She had always felt a sort of kinship with Sirius. They were both the black sheep of their respective families, although Evie's was far more kind and loving than she suspected his was. "Please, sit. I was just teasing," she promised him. She sat up a little straighter and put her book down. She felt like it was probably a good thing for her to have a little bit of social interaction. Lately, the most interaction she had outside of her family and Amos was her patients, and her colleagues when they had a free minute. "That definitely sounds unhealthy and the healer in me is dying a little bit. But I'd also be lying if I didn't say that I'm probably not in the same situation," she laughed. "How have you been doing?"
"Never?" Amos asked, an inkling of a challenge forming in his mind. Never being boring felt like he should try to be boring at least once but was he capable of that? Was Amos Diggory going to be okay with ever being considered boring? No. No, he was not. "Alright, let's do it. And, for the record, it's fine if it takes more than a couple of seconds, I'm worried you're going to go in sprinting and trip somehow." Their reservation wasn't for another fifteen minutes, and he knew they had some leeway on being late before they missed it.
"No, never," Evie told him. Evie couldn't ever imagine Amos boring her. Even when he was talking about things that she didn't particularly care about, she still wanted to hear everything that he had to say. It was the strangest thing. She couldn't ever remember feeling like that before. "I'm not that clumsy!" She exclaimed with a laugh, but even still she steered them into Flourish and Blotts. There was something about a bookstore that she had always loved. There were so many books in the world and she never felt like she had enough time to read them all. She expertly navigated them through the shelves. "Do you have a favorite book?" She asked, looking back at him.
peter had been doing night shifts recently, he didn't like them, but at this point everyone at st. mungos had been stretched thin and he couldn't help but sigh. he missed his normal schedule, found himself taking naps for most of his lunches. so when he sees evie he smiles at her briefly. "coming in." he says unfortunately. "we're being stretched so thin," he lets out a breath, his eyes panning up to the ceiling. "i'm due to help in a surgery later, so i'm just waiting for them to call me in." he was out in the field for the most part, but since many healers were scared of what was going on, he's been at the hospital, volunteering his time because what else was he supposed to do? "i'm guessing you're leaving soon?" he smiles. "take me with you. i won't say anything." peter laughs.
Evie hated working doubles. She supposed it technically hadn't been a double; she had just been called in earlier than normal, but it was exhausting. She had no idea what was happening- why they seemed so short-staffed lately, but it was getting exhausting for everyone. "I miss working with you. I feel like I never get to work with you anymore," she commented. She nodded her head. "I got called out in the middle of the night. There was an accident, and I only got back a few hours ago," she sighed. "I hope the surgery goes well. They're in good hands though, with you there." Evie knew that things had been tense since the opening, but she was hoping things would return to normal soon. She laughed. "I'm out of here so soon, and I can't wait. I wish I could, Peter, but I think our boss wouldn't approve."

Where: St. Mungo's
When: Mid-morning
Evie was nearly done with her shift for the day, and she was glad. She couldn't wait to get home and get out of these damned robes. She loved her job but despised the uniform. Sometimes she got a glimpse of the lime green and instantly got a headache. She knew why they wore them in the field, it made them more visible, blah blah blah, but why couldn't they wear neutral colors in the hospital? Nobody was going to mistake them here! Regardless of her annoyance, she knew that she had to keep up her professionalism when she was with her patient, and she forced her 'patient' smile onto her lips as she pushed open the door.
"Hello, Mr. Liebman. What brings you to St. Mungo's today?" She asked him. "I'm Mediwitch Macmillan."
Who: Evie & Peter @impcrios
Where: St. Mungo's Break Room
When: Early shift, a few days after the event
It had been a long shift, and Evie was exhausted. Things had somehow seemed crazier at the hospital and beyond than it had been last month. She had been called out to deal with an accident in the middle of the night, and it had taken up most of her shift. Now it was getting towards the end, and she was just ready to get home and collapse in her bed and sleep for twelve hours. She had been fantasizing about it for the last two hours. She dragged herself into the break room, relieved that she could leave soon. She spotted Peter already there and offered him a tired smile.
"Coming or going?" She asked curiously. Sometimes, it was hard to tell around here, especially with all the hours that they had been doing lately.
Amos hadn't been sure if Evie would be up for a date so soon after the events at St. Mungo's but, at the same time, he also wondered if a distraction from the hospital would be exactly what she needed. Either way, he was delighted at her acceptance and couldn't help but feel very smug and confident indeed as they walked down the street. "Of course, I don't mind. But you have to promise that no matter how boring the conversation becomes, you won't pull it out to read instead of talking to me."
Things had been crazy at the hospital lately, and she was glad to have a night off and to spend it with Amos. Lately, things had seemed more...serious between the two of them, and she was enjoying it. She always felt so light and happy with him; he brought out a different side in her. "I promise," Evie laughed. "But for the record, I would never. You could never bore me, Amos," Evie told him, her cheeks turning pink. "I promise I'll be quick. In and out. And then we can get to dinner."
Who: Evie & Sirius @thefallenstarfm
Where: Diagon Alley
When: A few days after the event
Evie finally had a full day off of work, and she fully intended to enjoy it. She had run a few errands that morning and picked up some new mediwitch robes since her other ones were getting worn out. But now she was finally getting to do what she had been dreaming about all week-- getting a coffee at her favorite cafe and reading a good book. Her roommate was home from work today too, and Evie just didn't have the patience to deal with her in their small flat, so the cafe had seemed like a better option.
She had just settled in for the afternoon when she felt a shadow above her. Evie nearly groaned, but when she saw who it was, her annoyance faded away. "Hey," she greeted Sirius Black. "It's good to see you in one piece," she teased. "What brings you here? Are you here to read a good book too?"

When: Evening, a few days after the party
Somehow things had gotten even busier at St. Mungo's in the wake of the ward opening and the tragedy. She still couldn't quite believe that something so awful had happened there. It didn't seem real. But every time she had to walk past the ward she was reminded that it was a crime scene before it had even opened its doors. When Amos had suggested that they go on a date, she had jumped at the idea. She wanted something nice to think about, was that so terrible? She loved an excuse to wear something a little nicer, and to spend the evening with Amos.
"Oh!" Evie exclaimed as they walked down the streets towards their dinner reservation. "Can we stop in Flourish and Blotts on the way? Please? I want to pick up a new book that just came out. I promise it'll be quick."
The whole interaction that she had just witnessed was the entire reason why she hated functions like this. Mixing people with other people that did not like each other was not the best idea. And well, she didn't want to even be here that much. But she was, and there was not much else she could do about that. At least she supposed the food and drink was good. "Most people are I have found." She murmured, shaking her head a she came over to Evie. "Not gonna lie though...." She mused as she looked around the room. "I am surprised this donor hasn't bragged. Though suppose there is more of the night to go where they could."
It was interesting, the way that they were hiding who the donor was so far. Were they even in attendance? Or maybe they were planning to show up halfway through the night. Despite working at St. Mungo's, she had no idea who it was--they had done a good job keeping it under wraps. "True," she agreed, shaking her head. It was just so hard to imagine the audacity that some people had. "I am a little surprised too. I'm starting to think that they aren't even here yet. They're probably going to want to make a big entrance or something," she mused. "I can't imagine them not revealing it tonight. I think people would rage."
"i'm so jealous that you don't stick out like a sore thumb like the rest of us, macmillan," he laughed, shaking his head looking at her outfit. she looked great, but everyone knew that peter worked here with his robes. "i swear to merlin, i'm going to file a complaint on our work outfit, this is ridiculous." he rubs his hands over his face and shakes his head. "are you having a good night at least?" he asks, with a raised eyebrow. being in the order he was constantly watching alastor while also trying to do his job with greeting people.
"Sometimes you need to break the rules, Pettigrew," Evie told him with a grin. "I thought that you would know that, Mr. Gryffindor," she teased with a laugh. This so-called rebellious streak had only recently begun, probably around the time she and Amos started to get serious. She didn't want to attend the night in her robes. "I will gladly cosign anything that you file. I don't understand why they think we have to shine bright in our robes to be effective. Wearing a neutral color for once would be a nice change." Evie knew that they had a point when they were out in the field, but she argued that sometimes it brought them into more danger. "It's been okay so far," she told him. "How about you? Are you having a good night?" She asked him.
the intoxicated partygoer had been making georgie anxious, her eyes practically glued to them as they made their way through the event. in another life, she would've been the first to tell them off, maybe even kick them to the curb if she was feeling bold but tonight, all she could do was watch. bringing attention to herself was the last thing she wanted. "some people can't hold their firewhiskey." she responded to the other when she looked over at her. "wonder who's brilliant idea it was to have an open bar at a hospital."
Evie had dealt with her fair share of intoxicated patients as a mediwitch, but it never got any easier dealing with them. At least he walked off with little drama. It was just annoying. She nodded her head. "It's true. And they are usually the ones that usually have a little bit too much to drink," she mused, shaking her head. "I think that they wanted to make tonight extra special. They probably thought that it would be more successful with an open bar."
"they must be just bored," mary says with a sigh, walking closer to evie. "they all want to expand their pockets unfortunately." she sighs looking over at the people who were aligned with the order of the phoenix, mary was nearly at the front with most of the welcoming healers when she spotted the other woman. "i can't wait to go home and take a long bath," she says with a small smile.
"That and a little drunk," Evie agreed, smiling at Mary. "Isn't that what most people want?" She agreed. She didn't agree with it, of course, the Macmillan family had never put much thought into wealth and the like, unlike so many other families. Evie nodded her head. "That sounds amazing. I love a good bath with some bubble bath and a good book and some candles. I wish my flat's bathtub was bigger," she laughed.
Amos had only just spotted Evie at the party having been looking for someone in Mediwix robes and not dressed up like the rest of them. His mouth was halfway open to greet her when he realized she was currently being accosted by someone asking about the donor; a question he himself had but knew better than to be that direct about it with someone who might actually have information. All he had to do was wait another minute or so with an amused smirk on his face before the man was stumbling away. "How dare he be so curious." He chuckled, taking the few steps left to close the distance between them. "Now, do you actually know who the donor is and you're going to keep it a secret even from me or are you in the dark just like the rest of us?"
"Amos!" She greeted, her smile brightening. She had been looking for him before she got distracted by the random attendee, and she was glad that he had found her. "It's okay to be curious, you know that I would never turn someone down who is curious. But it's the way that he went about it that's the problem," she rolled her eyes. She looked up at him, appreciating how nice he looked when he was a little dressed up. "Unfortunately they've kept us in the dark just like you guys. I guess they're afraid of a leak. You know that if I knew I would gladly tell you," she admitted. There was something about Amos Diggory that could get her to break the rules. "You look rather dapper tonight," she complimented, leaning up to kiss him on the cheek. "How has your night been?"
“I don’t know about you,” Cary started in a low and slow drawl, leaning on his elbow against a table set at the perimeter of the room, “But I am so bored. You’d think with how much they clearly spent on this whole thing they’d have sprung for better entertainment.” He chuckled as he glanced out at the crowd. “Do you wonder what half of them are even talking about?” He pointed discreetly at an elderly pair several yards away, animatedly in conversation though their words couldn’t be heard at this distance. “Take those two — what do you think they’re talking about?” Caradoc leaned even closer to his companion then, lips ghosting by their ear as he whispered, “Because I think they’re secret lovers but old handlebar mustache there just found out he’s been two timed by fancy hat. Why else would he be so red in the face?” Cary’s eyes twinkled mischievously as they danced between the old man with a tomato colored face and impressively curled mustache and the hat wearing individual he was engaged in conversation with, then back to Cary’s own fellow eavesdropping companion.

Jae hadn’t meant to spill the remains of their wine on another party goer. It was the purest of accidents, brought on by a drunken klutz who had tripped on another guest’s dress train and haphazardly waved their arms about while seeking balance, thus knocking the drink right out of the vampire’s hand and onto the nice dress robes of the person passing them by at the most opportune moment. “I mean it, I’m really sorry,” he said, grabbing whatever cocktail napkins were within reach and offering them to the one in soiled dress robes. “I swear, it was an accident, it all happened so fast.” Standing taller, they frowned at the other, trying to asses the fabric for any potential damage. “That doesn’t stain easily does it?” They then reached into their jacket to pull out their wand. “If you trust my spellcasting, I know a charm that will fix it right up.” They felt awful, were willing to do whatever was necessary to right this wrong. “I could also pay for it?” He offered quietly, wand still in hand. Jae hoped they didn’t take the offer — the dress robes looked expensive, definitely more than he could afford.

“I suppose it is kind of fortunate that you’re surrounded by healers,” Ted laughed as he pulled out the small first aid kit he always had strapped onto his belt when in uniform. He had thought initially that he should leave it behind when heading up to the new ward for the party, but he had a nagging feeling that he needed to keep a hold of it. It was small, not too bulky, and mostly consisted of tiny gulp sized portions of potions in small glass bottles, a roll of bandage with smiley faces printed across it, and small tins of healing salves. Things that could be used for smaller and more general healing practices. When he saw the stumble, heard the shatter of glass, he was quick to rush to the guest’s side, assuring everyone surrounding them that he was a licensed healer and would be able to help them. “How does that feel?” He asked, after administering medicine. He was putting his kit away, then taking his wand out from his St. Mungo’s issued holster so he could use a quick cleaning charm on the glass and spilled drink. Once that was taken care of, Ted pulled out a lollipop from his pocket, offering it to the patient. “Drinks are fun and all, but maybe we should take a little sucker break, hm?”

Corban was heading back inside after a much needed smoke break, waving his wand over himself to dispel the smell of nicotine clutching his dress robes as he crossed the foyer of St. Mungo’s. His heels clicked rhythmically against the linoleum floor, his speedy pace and long gait taking him towards the lift within moments. The doors were closing in as he stumbled closer, holding out a hand and calling, “Stop the lift!” Whether because his arm slipped between the closing doors, or the person on the other side magicked them to stop, the elevator doors slid back open, allowing him to cross inside. “Thank you,” he said in a huff, stepping inside. “I take it you’re heading up to the Blishwick Wing as well?” Both passengers settled within, and the lift had begun its ascent… only to come to a random stop between floors with a horrible screech. “….Well that doesn’t sound good,” Corban muttered, digging back into his robes to pull out his wand. “You’d think after spending all that money on the new ward, they’d ensure this elevator worked.” He sighed, turning towards the other stuck in this predicament with him. “I figure if it’s broken reparo ought to work, but just in case do you have any other charms in mind?
Evie had realized that she had left her clutch in the break room when she went to show Amos a photograph that she had found of her and her siblings at the Quidditch World Cup some years ago, so she had left the party to go find it. When she had located her clutch, she had checked to make sure everything was still there, before she had made her way back towards the new wing. She had only just gotten in and pressed the button to bring her to the proper floor when she heard a voice call out. She reached out and pressed the button quickly, dropping her clutch in the process onto the ground. "Damn it," she muttered to herself, leaning down to grab it, before she came face to face with Corban Yaxley. She felt her stomach drop. "Sure am," she replied, her voice slightly brighter than necessary. "Just needed to go find something that I left in the break room." She couldn't wait to get out of the lift. She was counting down the seconds until the elevator doors would open when the elevator suddenly screeched to a stop. She let her head fall back against the wall for a moment, glancing up at the ceiling. "I've worked here for a while and this has never happened before." At least never to her. She had heard stories of her coworkers getting stuck from time to time, but she had never been unfortunate enough to have it happen to her. "That's a good start. If it doesn't work we can try Ascendio, but I am worried about it going too fast.
