my notifications are once again devolving into a spirited debate about the ethics of actions that could potentially make someone uncomfortable, and at risk of sounding like someone about to get a lot of irate anons I think we're frankly giving way too to much moral weight to hypothetical discomfort
the thing about discomfort is that it's an extremely nebulous category that can be triggered by virtually anything and that's far too broad a category to have any inherent moral quality to it. like. my mom was mad uncomfortable when I stopped shaving. that didn't mean I was doing violence against my mom it just meant she needed to get over herself. many such cases it must be said.
unforchees guys had to dnf autopsy for diane after song 6... serotonin was okay but i vehemently dislike screamy garage punk and this was just not my cup of tea... ice cream guy is NOT the next bulby
OH and along with that animation change in king george and the ducky came a very fundemental change in the way veggietales songs were stylized.
vvv(best viewed on desktop/in landscape)vvv
obviously the animation was what started as the big breakthrough for veggietales. a revolution. so the music, while still important, was second fiddle to these super cool techy KOMPUTR GRAFIX... the songs were very dinky and midi-based and that only left so many sounds to explore. so a lot of the very early veggietales songs were kiddy sounding! catchy? yes, definitely! but it definitely leaned into being childrens music stylistically as well as lyrically.
ultimately, though, as more hands got involved, and animation quality increased, slowly but surely the music changed as well. at this point in the game, this is exemplified best in famous segment silly songs with larry. the rinkydink instrumentals are still there, but veggietales finds a groove that seriously makes them work, characterized by its experimentation with different drum types, simple, chunky basslines, and synths or horns taking lead(if not a more eclectic choice like accordion). not to mention the whole point is the SONGS being SILLY!, so most of the money is being put on the comedic or educational aspect....................
(note below i had to upload a video of the whole song instead of an uploaded snippet like the others. this thing LIKE A BITCH refuses to upload... probably copyright, so you can peek in here for yourself. one of the more experimental(and famed) veggietales songs.)
and, as the scope of the series expanded, the scope of its music did, too! instead of being exclusively "children's music," it became grounded within the boundaries of the episode's setting and plot. from allowing us clearance into the lush parisian countryside...
...to using a bouncy, ragtimey i want song to plant kids into the greedy little minds of the just-stranded-for-40-years israelites, a mind which[the music makes it sound like] they really want to be in, actually!
point is, instrumentally, the music has taken much more interest in what is relevant to the plot.
the show takes a sudden shift in episode 11("king george and the ducky"), where every veggie has been remodelled. note: this remodel only lasts for two episodes before another one comes clamoring in, but the effect of this one is felt permanently through the musical storytelling. even if the intstrumentals have evolved past the original midi horns and flat percussion, they have been very distinctly conversational, in the sense that they were still written primarily as kids songs, talking to kids. the characters have evolving interpersonal relationships, but songs, if they weren't of the silly variety, were vessels with lyrics sending the message directly to you: "a thankful heart is a happy heart." "little guys can do big things, too." "god is bigger than the boogeyman." from king george and the ducky onwards, the songs are written and composed more like musical theater songs: very declaratory, very call and response, and very character-driven.
(side note: "i must have it" is a very short song, only about 40 seconds. veggietales has had short songs like this before, but as it morphs into more musical theater stylings, these short songs have transformed from jingles into musical interludes.)
you get it, though? the final song of that trio came out after the second remodel, but the stylings were still there, and as far as i've seen they never really shake it off. you can also SERIOUSLY hear how far along the instrumentation has come, not only adding to the setting now but playing with character dynamics in the music.
notice how haman's musical hallmarks, the high-pitched flutes and string plucks that play during his part, start seeping into the king's lower, darker musical tones. a musical representation of the control haman exerts over the king!!!!
THIS IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!
over time, veggietales' music becomes so thought out, so rich, and i kind of really wish people could see it beyond the silly songs... even if they are great.
