I was thinking about Finnick’s last word in Mockingjay recently, and thought “out of all the words, why choose Katniss’ name?” and I thought - he knew he was already dead, so he wasn’t asking her to save him. It wasn’t last resort, he knew he had mere seconds to get out everything he was thinking. But he couldn’t. He had to choose one word, one that hopefully conveyed exactly what he was thinking. By screaming out Katniss’ name, he’s telling her he’s rooting for her, hoping that she’ll survive and end this war once and for all, that she’ll be there for Annie, that she’ll watch over Peeta, protect him because Finnick no longer can…when he screams Katniss’ name, it’s not just because she’s the last person he sees, it’s because she’s the only one who knows the most about him (save for Annie), and she’s witness to the horrors the Capitol is capable of. So when Finnick has moments left of his life, he calls out to another victor, to Katniss. He’s begging her to be the Mockingjay, to be the end, and to remember who the real enemy is. And that is heartbreaking.
