Fairy Tail Headcanon #7
Magic interacting with each other
This will go against the canon, hence Headcanon I suppose...
1. Fire and Water
- When fire and water type magic users are nearby it's no problem, it's not like a flame next to water will go out, but generally if they're on the same team they need to be aware of each other in case the water wizard accidentally extinguishes their teammate's flames.
- In the case of a wizard as strong as Natsu, it won't be as much an issue because we've seen him breathe fire from the ocean floor able to breach the water surface, but out of habit he and Juvia need to make sure to coordinate attacks well enough.
2. Fire and Ice
- Unlike fire and water, ice magic doesn't cope well in the vicinity of fire magic or celestial magic (stars, suns, heat), so it's rare in this world that fire and Ice wizards team up.
- This may contribute to the hostility Gray has for Natsu (plus personality clashes), and it might have been the case when they were younger and nowhere near as strong, their magic behaved as normal elements would without the amplification of their power, so I imagine Natsu would mess up Gray's magic a lot.
3. Water and Ice
- Similar to fire and ice, water magic users need to be wary of ice magic being used nearby, as they might lose control of their magic to the low temperatures dropping in the area.
- It doesn't immediately make sense to outsiders that Juvia and Gray perform a unison raid as well as they do, given that a lot of control is taken from Juvia when she loses agency over the frozen water, and her body starts to freeze up as well. However it performs so well given that Juvia is helping to amplify Gray's magic by giving him more "materials" to work with in addition to the ice he can produce himself.
- For the most part it would make sense that water wizards steer clear of ice wizards, however.
4. Metal, Water and Electricity/Lightning
- Metal magic used in the vicinity of water magic doesn't tend to be an issue, however prolonged and direct contact with water magic can cause the metal wizard's body (in the likely case they can turn to metal as Gajeel would) to rust. Especially for Gajeel as he's an iron dragon slayer, Juvia has to be mindful of physical contact, and in the time of her rainy bouts, they could only meet in shelter, as Gajeel would start to feel physically worn down (this contributes to her down periods as one of her only friends is in a way harmed by her presence, but he doesn't make her feel bad for it).
- Water and electricity/lightning, I feel could go either way. It could amplify the lightning user's magic, as water is a good conductor, but water wizards are likely to get damaged if not careful. In the case of a unison raid for example, Juvia might find it agonising to pair with Laxus, as her body would take on the brunt of the current. A unison raid would essentially be like a thunder/electrical storm with these two.
- Metal and electricity/lightning, very similar to the previous, as metal is a great conductor. Metal magic wizards should generally avoid lightning wizards, because while metal doesn't inherently attract lightning, the latter does seek the fastest route to the ground, and if a tall, isolated object (like, say, Gajeel's 6ft iron sword arm swinging high) is about, Laxus' magic might accidentally be redirected to hit Gajeel instead of the enemy. Not only can this seriously hurt Gajeel, but Laxus could run out of magic energy if this keeps happening.
