Having Sisko and Bashir be the ones to get stuck in the sanctuary district in Past Tense was such a good call. Julian's characteristic optimistic naivety (at least in the earlier seasons) makes him this weird kind of audience stand-in, but instead of literally representing the audience watching the show, it's like he's representing the view of an imaginary audience from a place where things that are normal or acceptable in our own society are shocking, and it's one of the things that makes the episode work as really biting social commentary. In Star Trek you often get a character who plays an audience pov who asks the kinds of questions the audience might have, especially as a way of explaining away technobabble. To have a character ask "Why isn't anyone helping this person with schizophrenia??" in the same way Riker asks Geordi what's up with the warp core is pretty uncomfortable to say the least.

Julian's constant outrage, disbelief at what he's seeing, and refusal to accept things as they are is also great. He never lets you forget how messed up this is, and I think it was a good opportunity to develop his character as well. It's one of the first really traumatic things that happens to him and the way he reacts to everything really shows it, along with the strength of his convictions and his stubbornness for doing what's right which he carries on right to the end of the series. His kindness also shines through when he helps the woman injured boy (against Sisko's objections) and the woman with diabetes in the processing centre.

Then there's Sisko, who tempers Bashir's outrage with (kind of paternal) pragmatism. He doesn't accept that things had to be that way and understands the wrongness of what he's seeing to its fullest extent, but unlike Julian, he knows what he can and can't do about it, and chooses to accept that there are some things he personally can't change but does everything he possibly can with the influence he has. This Includes taking a bunch of hostages at gun point (and it's actually crazy they had a Star Trek protagonist do that lol), which Julian is visually extremely uncomfortable about, and being prepared to give his life to ensure things get better. For me, he's the very image of a great Starfleet captain in these eps.

I have to also mention the obvious fact that both characters are people of colour who, despite being a decorated commander and a doctor, find themselves immediately written off as worthless by a white guard and discarded into a concentration camp. Meanwhile their white colleague ends up in a penthouse.

You can never overstate how funny it is that Dukat pre-recorded all those messages for each different scenario in Civil Defence like he made a Choose Your Own Adventure. There's probably hundreds or thousands more that they didn't even get to see

intellectually i understand that ds9 probably has sonic washing machines or whatever but i think the station should have a coin-operated laundromat (you must go to quark's to exchange cash into Quark Coins to use it) and i think there should be drama wherein someone removes garak's wet clothes from the washing machine and leaves them in a heap on a table. and of course he finds out who did it by hacking the security cameras and promptly rigs the washing machine to explode the next time they use it.

julian always forgets to take his washing out and every time someone else puts it in the dryer for him to be nice. four years in and he still believes that there's a hidden transporter function in the machines that take the wet clothes and zap them over to the dryer automatically

Truly awful fifteen minutes in there late one night when both Garak and Kira turn up because they thought it would be quiet but no. Garak gnawing his knuckles in agony because Kira is throwing everything in together and not sorting them into piles for different temperature washes. Will she thump me now because I’ve spoken to her, or will she thump me later because she’ll know I could have saved her, and why is this my life.

Jake and Nog do, at some point, accidentally install a hidden transporter function, but instead of zapping your washing into the dryer, it zaps one sock per wash into the transporter buffer on the Defiant. Years later, this upsets a delicate first contact situation in the Delta Quadrant when O'Brien thinks to clear out the ol' buffer while in orbit and causes the heavens over a pre-warp society to rain socks for days.

Hey so. What the fuck is up with Garak and Ziyal. I'm just going about my business, la-di-da-ing my way through DS9, we're about to go do cool gamma quadrant spy type stuff, and then this appears on my screen and I nearly vomit. Isn't she like 12? What the fuck.

SPOILERSSSS - Im pretty sure shes like early 20s at that point (she went missing at like 13 or 14 if i remember correctly) but its still weird and absolutely a “look guys. Garak totally is not gay” thing.

The only things it has going for it is it makes sense for Ziyal to latch onto him like that, and I’m not sure she ACTUALLY liked him in that sense, I think she just had catastrophic daddy issues. So it does feel in character for me. The other thing that saves it is Garak explicitly telling her he only hangs out because shes like the only cardassian who tolerates him left in his life.

He never does seem to return those feelings. But then in a very Garak way as soon as Dukat ASSUMES he does, hes like “yes Dukat. I am Absolutely without a doubt banging your daughter.”

These are literally in the same scene btw.

When she dies, I also feel like this implies that he didn’t return any feelings. Also it is sad :(

I also feel like he knew outright rejecting her would mean exile all over again, in a way, and that she probably didnt need any more outright rejection in her life. Which doesnt make his decision a GOOD one, but I do get it from a character standpoint

Anyone else think the reason ds9 deeply resonates with Queer people is because, at its Heart, its about a third space created but a group of patriotic people fundamentally alienated from their own people. Like obviously garak and quark but consider how were told in the first episode that Kira has been sent there to get her "out of the way" of the civilian government, how the things shes needed to do to both survive and secure their freedom seem deeply uncomfortable to all the civilian leaders. Dax considering both Joran and her eagerness towards reassociation make her basically a non entity on Trill. Bashir takes a while but the augment reveal puts him firmly in this Category. Obriens difficulty with his ptsd and moving passed personal préjudices puts him at odds with a lot of federation ideals. Siskos deep trauma around the loss of his wife and inability to move pass this, makes him very inconvenient to a federation desperate to pass itself off as a Utopia. He then becomes more and more unacceptable as he leans further into his role as in emissary, with the federation seemingly very uncomfortable with this religious expression. Jesus, Worf begins his tenure by getting himself exiled from klingon space.

Like idk, I dont think its all that shocking a Bunch of Queer people most liked the show about having a complicated relationship with your culture and never being allowed to go home.
