Ok so I got a bunch of random Kel’Dor headcanons that I need to share with the world so here you go. I’m going to split them up since i have too much for one post and I don’t want this thing to becomw a whole essay (I as say if it won’t anyways)

Kel’Dor Headcanons (General)

Kel’Dor, while more reptilian in appearance, are actually a lot more similar to birds than lizards. They mostly take after a combination of burrowing owls, crows, and penguins in terms of behavior. Think of them as giant featherless birds. In terms of appearance, they don’t share any similarities other than having a beak.

Kel’Dor are a burrowing species and most of their population on Dorin lives in underground cities or towns that have been dug by hands over thousands of years. Very rarely are Kel’Dor seen on the surface of Dorin, and most natives rarely see the sun. This sets them apart from off-world Kel’Dor, who are often uncomfortable with the notion of living their whole lives underground (I will go more into the differences between native and off-world Kel’Dor in another post). However, that doesn’t mean its uncommon for off-world Kel’Dor to make burrows of their own.

They often communicate using chirps and whistles, along with several other noises to convey how they’re feeling. To break is down simply:

Chirps = general use, typically happiness or curiosity

Twitter/ Whistles = to call attention to something, express joy or surprisement. Twittering can also mean amusement or laughter

Clicking = confusion or irritation, the fast the clicks the more upset they are

Warbles = confusion or distress/ anxiety, can also be used to comfort others

Hissing = agitation, basically a warning sign to back off. Can also be made when alarmed or startled

Trills = depending on context, either joy/ surprise or a sign of aggression and that they feel unsafe

Screeching = to alert others of danger or ward off danger

Kel’Dor can also mimic, typically people but sometimes objects (this is where the crows come in). This was used in the past as a defense mechanism or as a tactic to lure in prey. Today they rarely use it for those purposes but they still do it unintentionally very often. Young Kel’Dor typically learn to mimic before they learn how to speak.

The last thing I’ll go into is Kel’Dor rock language, which I derived from Gentoo penguins. To put it simply, Kel’Dor often exchange rocks between family members, and they also play an important role in their courtship rituals. Each Kel’Dor essentially has a specific rock/ type of rock known as a Bondstone. The Bondstone can be anything, be it just any average gray stone or a highly specific type of granite. It depends on the Kel’Dor and their preferences, and theres no concrete way for how they choose them. Bondstones can only be exchanged if romantic feelings are involved and are seen as a marriage proposal.

After they propose and get married, the couple typically only exchange their Bondstones, although its not uncommon for other rocks to be exchanged as well. If one or both of them stop giving each other their Bondstone, thats seen as a divorce and they are no longer married.

Rocks can also be used as an adoption method by giving rocks to someone outside your family or significant other. Rocks are exchanged outside of family only in this regard, and to do otherwise is a major offense/ insult (especially if you don’t mean it)

keldeorinyaa is the planetary standard language spoken on the Expansion Region planet of Dorin (deorin), primarily by its indigenous species, the Kel Dor (keldeor), and throughout the galactic Kel Dor diaspora.

Out of universe, keldeorinyaa is a WIP conlang created by a novice conlanger ( @plokoonsdisapprovingeyebrows ) with zero linguistic qualifications, so please adjust expectations accordingly. XD I am primarily a worldbuilder; my conlanging ventures are as much about the sociocultural world of the Kel Dor as they are linguistic. Both will feature on this blog.

Some things to note:

Canon worldbuilding for the Kel Dor is a little sparse, and with a couple of exceptions the tidbits of canon language we do have are very keyboard-smashy in vibes. I have kept some canon stuff and discarded other stuff, but I also can't say for sure that I've seen it all. Feel free to ask about my reasoning!

The language has been under development for two years now and is currently undergoing some... reforms. If something changes overnight, it's because it's been bugging me for a while and i finally got around to doing something about it.

On a related note, there are a handful of synonyms and near-synonyms in the dictionary. This is usually deliberate, but feel free to ask if you find one because I may have something to say about it.

I do have a writing system/alphabet under development! Someday I will actually post it! XD

I said I was gonna redo my Kel Dor conlang translations - here's a big one! :D

Instead of listing the vocab, I'm just gonna link my dictionary sheet. Some of the vocab needs explanation; scroll to the bottom for notes.

Disclaimer: this is Baby's First Conlang and I'm doing it for fun; don't expect linguistic accuracy. My primary motivation for conlanging is as worldbuilding first, learning some cool stuff about linguistics second. Also I have never taken a thing 100% seriously in my life.

š = the 'sh' in sheep

ň = the 'ng' in thing

č = the 'ch' in cheese

ao = oh, as in "oh dear"

ë = schwa-ish, very unstressed vowel, 'uh'

ř = rhotic r, american-english style

r = tapped r, spanish-style

Grammatical notes---

Turmoil has engulfed the Galactic Republic. ⟶ Sentence structure is SOV, and strictly so on the primary verbs.

⟶ Verbs are strictly either active or passive; you have to use different words for agent vs. recipient, it can be quite Rude if u don't. (See the cultural notes at the end.) For example, khalaldi is a passive verb, used for the thing that's being buried; its active counterpart is kali, used for the thing doing the burying.

⟶ Verbs come in a base-present form, and can be conjugated for past, future-certain, future-uncertain, ongoing, and habitual tenses/aspects. There are five verb classes and each one has a fairly regular conjugation protocol.

⟶ [.p] in brackets indicates a particle - these are the grammatical bones of the sentence.

⮡ the particles here are ei, a, di, and yajhe.

⟶ I studied Japanese for a few years and a lot of the basic grammar here is similar, because idk, I just vibe with it. XD

⟶ There will also be future updates of this post once i figure out how noun class works. There are some aspects of noun class in here now (plurals, and the shit noun class for the Trade Federation), but the rest will have to wait lmao

⟶ nainoa = more like a membership fee in Vibes than a tax; it's what you give to the community in return for benefiting from it. Dorin does not have a monetary economy except for where it interacts with the outside galaxy; homeworld communities run on barter, exchanges, and the rule of hospitality. (See cultural notes again.)

Hoping to resolve the matter with a blockade of deadly battleships, the greedy Trade Federation has stopped all shipping to the small planet of Naboo. ghaylaleme ninhayavedi di na yoidaake kšabinakšinie baladura ksoli ivooli ei gyelili dekho zakhi tya, giya tsërrea naboo iyë hayanin lilangelale. ⟶ ghaylale on its own is an adjective meaning 'wanting, desiring'; it's pretty neutral in tone. Adding me on the end turns it into the shit noun class and makes it derogatory: greedy, entitled, etc. The villains of the story get the shit noun class instead of the people noun class - this is common in children's books.

⮡ vek means 'shit'. This is the actual name of the class.

⮡ noun class shows up in plurals, adjectives, verbs, rather than the actual noun. There are 16 of them, which is why it's taking me so long to figure them out lmao

⟶ there are no capital letters in keldeorinyaa. this is because i am lazy.

⟶ [.m] = mood particle. na is the intentional mood, used when you're planning to do something, or have done something on purpose. tya is the desiderative mood, when you're hoping for something or trying to aim for a specific outcome.

⟶ gyelili = to resolve, but in a bad-faith way; to come in and dictate a unilateral solution that isn't actually mutually beneficial. Kel dor society goes hard on cooperation and they have a lot of different words for different levels of this sort of thing. (See cultural notes again.)

⟶ ivooli = trouble, specifically that which you had a hand in making. Used here instead of ovoo because there wouldn't have been an issue had the trade federation not gotten in bed with the sith :V

⟶ dekho = future-uncertain tense conjugation of the verb di, used as an auxiliary verb here. Can't use gyeliliča, that's too certain; can't use gyelilekho; too uncertain. gyelili dekho strikes the right balance between the villain's intention to Commit Crimes and the heroes' intention to stop them.

⟶ holy run-on sentences batman

⟶ There are three genitive particles for slightly different meanings. ta is for something that's yours, ča is for when you belong to a group, and de for relationships between people. ča is specifically a community-membership thing, used for clans, schools, cities and towns, planets, etc. (Absolutely do not use it in relation to slavery, you'll get ur ass beat.)

⟶ ryuakiah re = alarming, concerning, literally 'anxiety-inducing'. ryuakiah is 'anxiety', re is the qualitative particle, use of which can turn a lot of non-adjective words into adjectives.

⟶ oro lilaan = without end. Most particles have to come after the thing they're talking about, but oro, the negation particle, can come on either side of the word, especially when there's another particle where it might otherwise be.

⟶ yakariyi dizi = to debate (all the fucking time). dizi is the habitual form of the aux verb di. This means that the Senate is debating the matter (as they always do), and it goes nicely with the problem presented in TPM (i.e. that they're not fuckin doing anything to solve the problem).

⟶ šyemriyi = to resolve a problem (like, actually, in a good, mutually-beneficial way). Compare this to gyelili above. It doesn't necessarily have to be good for everyone involved, because sometimes (as in this case) one side is being an asshole for no reason, but it does require good faith on the part of the solver, which the Jedi displayed by trying to negotiate directly with the Trade Federation.

⟶ Compare the different plural constructions:

⮡ halmizeolko = no marking; belongs to Class 4 (people)

⮡ kšabinakšinie = plural of kšabinakši, warship; belongs to Class 12 (ships)

⮡ ninaimak = plural of anaimak, event; belongs to Class 9 (things)

⮡ jedai naitaga = dual of jedai naita, Jedi Knight; belongs to Class 8 (ancestors).

⮡ tbh u really just have to learn them by heart. Noun class is in the process of largely going away in casual speech and this is why.

⟶ A handy list of particles:

⮡ di = topic marker

⮡ ei = focus marker

⮡ a = relational marker. (I still haven't figured out exactly where the lines are between these three tbh.)

⮡ yajhe = "regarding", "as for [x]" "about this", etc.

⮡ ksoli = method marker, points out how you did a thing

⮡ zakhi = purpose marker, points out the main goal

⮡ iyë = destination marker, indicates where a thing ends up

⮡ ča = belonging particle

⮡ re = qualitative particle, turns a word into a description or emphasises an adjective

⮡ oro = negation particle, something doesn't exist/didn't happen/is absent etc.

⮡ ňa = timeframe particle, time during which something occurs

⮡ ade = enclosed location, "within"

⮡ ki = additive particle, "and"

Cultural notes---

⟶ Dorin is Giant Storm Hellworld and this has had a significant effect on Kel Dor culture.

⟶ Their most dearly-held values, no matter where you go, are Cooperation, Practicality, and Hospitality. These are not just moral requirements, they're survival skills. If you don't work together, you're dead. If you don't prioritize real practicality over emotional desires, you're dead. And if you refuse to give shelter to someone who needs it, why should others give shelter to you? On a world where the natural environment is so very good at killing, someone who goes it alone is going to end up dead sooner or later.

⟶ There is a strong taboo against physical conflict and violence. Partly this is because fighting is a waste of time and energy when you really should be preparing for the next storm; partly it's because of a long-ago ideological war that nearly halved Dorin's population. Most of their words to describe various war-related things are actually euphemisms or just straight up loanwords.

⟶ There is also a strong cultural tendency of, the more you like someone (or something), the less you talk directly about them. Kel Dor tend to have an attitude that it's a matter of when, not if, the natural environment destroys or kills or otherwise fucks up something meaningful to them. The talking around loved ones comes from the idea that if the spirits of the world don't know their loved ones are loved ones, they'll be less interested in stealing them away. This is where the active vs. passive verbs come from.

⟶ The corollary is if you speak plainly and directly to someone, you might be telling them you don't give a fuck about them lol. If you don't know them, this is considered perfectly fair, but if you do know them well, it's a bit like saying "go drown in a lake."

⟶ The rule of hospitality is that if someone turns up at your door without shelter or food, you're honor-bound to provide both to the best of your ability -- because it's a mere matter of luck that you're not in their place. Even with modern technology, storms and other natural disasters still cause a ton of destruction, and people are very cognizant of the likelihood that they may need to rely on the hospitality of strangers themselves in the future. There are no strangers in a storm.

⟶ Similarly, if you benefit from belonging to a community, you're honor-bound to give back to it, in whatever way you can. Someone helps you out, you help them out. Teamwork makes the dream work.

⟶ There's also a careful delineation between things you're reasonably responsible for, and things that just happen. As mentioned, Kel Dor society considers practicality a high virtue. On Giant Storm Hellworld, practicality means accepting that sometimes you do everything you can and the storms win anyway.

⮡ this is why there's two future tenses for certain vs. uncertain, and also why most of the mood particles exist. intentional mood (na) doesn't necessarily mean you'll succeed at doing the thing, you just are doing it on purpose. Moral mood (ya) means you're doing it because you should; doesn't necessarily mean it will work. Practical mood (ka) means you're doing it and it's within your capability; maybe you could do more or better, but you're not sure, and the thing you successfully complete is better than the thing you fuck up cause you aimed too close to the sun lmao.

Reminders for fanfic writers who think it “doesn’t count”

✦ Your writing counts. like, a lot. If someone felt something because of what you wrote, then it matters. That scene you almost didn’t post? Yeah. Believe me, someone out there bookmarked it for a reason.

✦ Writing existing characters doesn’t make it “less than.” You’re building arcs, crafting dialogue, emotion, pacing. You’re studying character psychology like a scientist. That’s not “just fanfic,” that’s storytelling.

✦ “but it’s just fanfic” ...no. STOP, it’s craft. It’s understanding tone. It’s hitting emotional beats. It’s layering theme and backstory and prose into something people feel. You’re doing the work, you just don’t get graded on it. (Which, honestly is a blessing.)

✦ Writing fanfic means you love stories enough to live inside them. You care, deeply. You care enough to reimagine, to explore, to add something of yourself to a world you didn’t create and somehow still make it feel brand new.

✦ Someone out there rereads your fic like it’s their favorite book. Maybe they’ve saved a line to their notes app,or they quote it to a friend. Maybe they just think about it when they’re having a bad day. That little fic you almost deleted, it’s comfort now.

✦ Your comments section is real. Every “I needed this” and “this made me cry in a good way” is proof, you don’t need a book deal to matter. You don’t need a publisher to have an impact, because you already do.

FANFIC IS WRITING! Fanfic is yours.

You’re not “just” anything. You’re a writer, own it. Be proud of that.

PLO KOON WEEK, DAY SEVEN

PLO KEEN WEEK, DAY 2

PADAWAN PHOTOS//PLO AND CRECHLINGS

This is Plo and his two bestest friends in the whole world - Bir the Nautolan and Ruu the Zabrak.

They've been besties since they were crechelings.

This photo was taken when the three of them were in Second Year trials together, and Tyvokka had just taken Plo as padawan - The second youngest Padawan the temple had ever seen.

PLO KOON WEEK, DAY FIVE

CHRONIC PAIN//BROKEN ANTI-TOX MASK

Master Plo was not always that much-loved, respected soul of his later years. There's a common misconception that in the Jedi Temple, pecking orders and bullying among Crechlings, Younglings, Initiates and Padawans is nonexistent. Sadly that is not the case.

Plo (although he was altogether competent at defending his space and his honour as the years went by) had THREE cardinal social strikes against him for his first few years in training: he was SMALL (pre/early pubescent Kel' Dor are naturally a little smaller than Humanoid youngsters for a while and if they are "Late Emergers," they are even smaller), he was DIFFERENT (till little Ithia Paan came along, he was the only Anti-ox mask wearer in the temple for a long time) and he was "UGLY". Here’s how THAT happened.

The Fourth Year contingent ‘clique’ was headed up by a Zeltron killer bee who sorely resented that someone three years her Junior had been promoted to the Level Four combat ring and was currently thirty seven points ahead of her in the year-end rankings. Who exactly did this young upstart think he was? So she decided to take the low ground. and she and her buddies got hold of some Holonet images of unmasked Kel' Dor and their "ugly demon faces" - and started circulating them. As so often happens, things deteriorated from there.

More alarmingly, she ALSO began de-masking him in combat - a VERY dangerous thing to do to a Kel' Dor. This was partly to gain a tactical advantage (incidentally, because of her attempts de-masking became a points-demerit offense and very soon, one that also earned a two week abasement penalty in the temple), and partly because she... just loved to humiliate him.

Suddenly life was more than a little hard. Thank the stars Plo always had a stalwart pack of pals who were always at the ready to have his back... and a Master who was having none of that sort of thing happening to his Padawan. Eventually she left the Temple for training elsewhere - but not before Plo sustained ego damage that took years to fade away.

She actually broke one of his anti-ox filters when she knocked his mask off this time (above), and he spent the weekend on anti-ox meds in the Infirmary before he was well enough to rejoin his pals. It was a close call.

PLO KOON WEEK, DAY 1

Wolfpack// Accidental Child Acquisition

Ahsoka has gone to Dor'in with Master Plo so many times, it's basically become her second home. At the request of Plo's mum, the family adopted her into the clan with the equivalent of a Dorshan "Screech-In" (except in their case you don't kiss the cod. You kiss the "Wieldling" - a fearsome zebra fish-looking creature with sharp spines on either side of its lower lip, and except Plo's family wouldn't dream of making a five year old do that). Now Ahsoka has more grandparents, aunties, uncles, and cousins than she knows what to do with, and loves every minute of that.

Plo has a collection of funny sweaters and T Shirts (Shaak Ti knits, and is responsible for a number of them) that he can only wear when he goes home. So, this is one of them. This image was taken on the streets of Dor'shan three Summers ago 😎

here's the dictionary entries for the main critters:

haššantegar — (n.) // — lightning bat; a goose-sized flighted animal resembling a downy azhdarchid pterosaur that frequently swarms in huge numbers as storms approach

nawaleh — (n.) // — carrion bat; an enormous gliding flier with downy skin, a very large toothy head, and a wingspan that can reach 6m across

yanšigir — (n.) // — whaleseal; the largest predator in Dorin’s oceans, a cold-adapted diving predator with grasping claws on its front flippers, reaching up to 15m in length

kyevičoe — (n.) // — a very large (2m+) worm species found in Dorin’s extensive tidal mudflats, frequently hunted with only partial success, capable of regeneration

erem — (n.) // — a small (~40cm) snakelike predator frequently kept as household pets and for pest control

injarra — (n.) /in.dʒa.ra/ — a six-legged burrowing animal the size of a large rabbit, native to Dorin's desert interior, where they congregate in large groups and dig enormous underground warrens to reach subsurface water. Sometimes kept as pets, often eaten.

bil'oni — (n.) /bil.o.ni/ — a midsized scavenging omnivore native to Dorin's temperate grasslands, often called 'bil'oni ponies' by offworlders for their equine looks. Everything is food to a bil'oni pony; as ravenous as they are delicious. Often kept as livestock or pets.

ňebirra — (n.) /ŋe.bi.ra/ — a small armadillo-like quadruped often found in cellars and subterranean homes, kept as pets and pest control. Highly social, highly intelligent.

khapartaň — (n.) /kʰa.paɾ.taŋ/ — 'blueknife', a species of fist-sized snail with a sharp defensive edge to the shell, commonly used for blades after being eaten. Shells are mottled shades of blue and often used for decoration.

KELDEORIN'YAA WORD OF THE DAY!

NYAITAN (N) - Domesticated or tame animal, animal species commonly kept as pets (not farm animals).

There are not a lot of animals native to Dor'in that Kel' Dor keep as pets. Bil'oni ponies are the largest (and sadly, always in danger from the Carrion Bats - huge flying predators that regularly take live prey too), various smaller birdlike species, several small lizard species, and a small Armadillo-like quadruped that kids love to roll like a ball along their hall floors (interestingly the little Armadillos love it 😶). Fish tanks too... The most common house pet though is the salty sweet YANNWA ("Water Wing").

Water Wings in the wild are flightless Estuarial swimming birds that hunt via sonar, as they are low vision predators. These ones kept as pets have been specifically bred as companions, but don't let that fool you into thinking they are marshmallows with talons. Salty sweet, right? Water wings are territorial by nature and when one is acquired, they are acquired as an egg which hatches IN THE HOUSE, thereby ensuring whoever is present for the hatching of this little terror is imprinted upon by the hatchling. What if everyone is at work or at school -? Good question. Fortunately, a strange quirk of Yannwa is to only hatch after the sun has set (this has something to do with the lunar cycles of the planet) so this is what NORMALLY happens. Of course you always have the 'odd' event where some weirdo egg hatches at 2 A.M. equivalent (Dor'shan time) and imprints on the darn Armadillo but these are the exception and not the rule (Mother Dor'in doesn't do that to nice families very often). You really, REALLY need them to imprint on the family. Those beaks are capable of a 410 PSI bite that can take a hand off at the wrist, and then they aim unerringly for the hamstrings and Achilles tendon when chasing after perceived threats.

One of the best things about Yannwi as (guard creatures for a family) is that, once they have imprinted, whatever offspring or young are present in the dwelling will be recognized as young, identified by scent as THEIR OWN and will henceforth never be in danger of harm from them - no matter how much mauling they endure. Kel' Dor mums and dads are naturally extremely appreciative of this and little ones are taught very early on to respect the space of these loyal companions and never press them. Sights like this (above) are common, Yann'wa love a good snuggle.

On an unrelated note, you will notice the little one's eyes are blue... Kel' Dor young have blue eyes for the first twelve or so months of life, after which they darken to deep brown or green, and then darken further in adolescence down the road.

The Yannwa above is named RANTEVAAN, which means SAILOR. Other common names are KSANGERAK (STUBBORN), NYEKO (FIERCE, AGGRESSIVE) and šIBA (TALONS, CLAWS).
