A Fallout 3 story.
When I was playing it the first time I had a blast just wandering around the wasteland.
No main quest, out of the vault just wandering around, inspecting every trash can and speaking to every NPC.
One time I was inspecting this gas station and going through some doors if find the father.... had not even started getting to the first quest... skipped it all by accidentally finding the father....
So that's how I ruined fallout 3 for myself.
it's really funny how the entire world basically just blew the fuck up six short years ago and nobody wants to admit that that may have had some lasting consequences lmao
like so much of Everything today is premised on the idea that the earth-shattering catastrophe which happened within living memory of everyone older than a third grader has had no meaningful material or psychological effects on the general public and i don't think that's good, lol.
"(some of) the top-line economic indicators (sorta) recovered (in most places) so everything is fine and we don't need to talk about it" is not a sustainable framework for interfacing with reality

Ughh fuck I'm sorry. Not to "um actually", not to be a dick:
This is a pretty oversimplified explanation of everything that's going on and I don't think it's a great idea to boil everything down to "six years ago we had a pandemic". The broader historical context matters, and blaming it on a pandemic takes a lot of the responsibility off of the people who created our current situation.
2020 compounded shit, for sure, but that's mostly because it just highlighted pre-existing issues, it didn't create them. Everything thats happening now are downstream effects of shit that kicked off in the 70s.
-New Left movement triggered the Powell Memorandum
-Which created right-wing think tanks like the Cato Institute and Heritage Foundation, which exist to push right-wing agendas
-Which lead to the evangelical right through movements like the Silent Majority
-Meanwhile the US economy drastically shifted from a goods economy into being financialized (prioritizing stocks/shareholder interests rather than producing & exporting goods)
-All of which got Reagan elected, who then BUTTFUCKED this country by attacking the working class/empowering corporations (i.e. destroying organized labor/labor rights and the welfare state, paralyzing wages, stripping back regulations, etc)
-which birthed the modern right-wing party of today that pushes anti-intellectualism, misinformation campaigns and hyper-nationalist warhawk American Exceptionalist imperialist propaganda
-which then led into shit like the Patriot Act and Citizens United, further stripping regular people of protections while further empowering corporations
So all of these bad decisions snowballed into a MASSIVE PROBLEM when the Pandemic hit because people couldn't work, but there was no social safety net anymore.
People no longer had savings to live off of because wages have been stagnating since the 70s while cost of living has continued to shoot up.
People were ending up homeless because people are renting more than ever after private equity bought up all the affordable housing & created a housing crisis.
People were dying because our corporation-allied gov has fought tooth and nail to maintain a privatized healthcare system no one can afford. Also shit like the CDC is constantly having its grant funding cut by politicians.
People no longer trust medical professionals because of said privatized healthcare, they think everything's too influenced by money (because, tbh, it is).
People are not only deliberately undereducated but also constantly fed misinformation/propaganda AND taught to distrust experts due to anti-intellectual culture.
Nobody trusts the mainstream news anymore because they understand it's too influenced by money/corporate interests.
People are struggling to get back on their feet due to their crippling school loans (thanks privatized higher-education) and the owner class having been empowered to destroy the middle class. They're actively trying to create a permanent underclass right now.
So it's all just snowballed into catastrophic late-stage capitalism, and as Lenin said: "fascism is capitalism in decay".
That's why the job market is fucked, why everyone's paranoid as hell, why everything's so divisive, why everyone's dumber than ever and why everything feels like a house of cards constantly on the brink of collapse. Because it honestly kind of is. We're witnessing US Empire eating itself, capitalism is highly auto-cannibalistic. Fun!
Covid exasperated a lot of pre existing problems, the end run of where those policies were always heading, just sped up by a world disaster.

Alien invasion, except the aliens are slow, weak, have bad perception, cowardly, and smell absolutely delicious, like mouthwatering, like you have never eaten before, they just smell so so good, just the smell makes your stomach rumble in hunger, if thay bleed the smell increases exponentially as well as the desires awoken by it.
The smell is so noticeable that you can smell it several it's traces hours after they have passed an area.
Even worse thay taste so...so GOOD, impossible good, better than anything possible.
A small problem they need to be eaten raw, around an hour after death, the smell cease to be hunger inducing, while still smelling good and the flesh taste kind of bad.
The most damning of all they are extremely healthy to eat, like small health packages, they induce really fast regenerative healing, even to the genetic level, any wound seems to be healed by it.
While only eating one would heal you of every wound and damage caused by life, slowly pushing your body to its theoretical healthiest state, while increasing your life expectancy by several decades.
Continually consuming more causes your body to evolve, every positive trait you have will improve, you will aquire more traits and abilities, they will grow to superpower level after only consuming a couple, The powers grow more and more powerful the more you eat.
You are basically vampires to them.
Now the kicker, they are extremely arrogant believing themselves superior to all life.
So you have small delicious, health packs running around behaving like assholes.

Also I am asking all of you, once again, to learn about ecosystem conservation and restoration instead of wallowing in "we are already past the point of no return" or that it will take "millennia" to restore ecosystems.
You have to understand that nature does not work in the same timeframe as ours. Protecting and restoring ecosystems is RIDICULOUSLY inexpensive and requires very little industrial technology; shovels and saplings are not exactly high-tech. But it takes time and long-term projects with people determined to do it. Maybe we are too focused in our "we want it now" thinking, but what you see today is not what you may see in 10, 20, 50, even 80 years if you live that long.
But it works. It's working right now, and when capitalism is replaced by socialism and we stop thinking on short-term gain, when our societies are focused into the common welfare instead of accumulation, it will even work better. Again I could point out to individual examples but instead, I encourage you to learn about ecology. We are well past from the catastrophic "Earth will die and there's nothing we can do" predictions from the 80s. We know what to do, we know it can work.

I want you to KNOW how doable this is. How inexpensive this is, how POSSIBLE THIS IS. That people working and loving the land and nature they live in is possible. That these projects WORK, THEY DO restore and preserve ecosystems. That humanity is neither a plague that destroys everything or a passive bystander on its own destruction but that these are actual things that can be, are, and will be implemented, backed by actual science and results. This is not empty #hopecore #hopepunk feel good stuff, these are things you can learn about, even work towards, and you can most certainly demand they are part of our society.

I know I can't fly a small plane. The judgments needed for only spacial distance is something you have to learn by experience. The how and why of the wind and air flow is something that actually takes effort to learn
The difference between them shows an interesting gap between knowing and understanding something, with internalized knowledge.
Perhaps taking the time to actually try to internalize knowledge would lessen the stupidity inherent in us all.
