"God's work, done in God's way, will never lack God's supplies." - Hudson Taylor
Every now and then I'll feature a few photos I've found and gathered that I find fascinating and insightful from past history.
Today's Featured Missionary: Hudson Taylor James Hudson Taylor (Chinese: 戴德生) (1832-1905), was a British Protestant Christian missionary to China, and founder of the China Inland Mission (CIM) (now OMF International). Taylor spent 51 years in China. The society that he began was responsible for bringing over 800 missionaries to the country who began 125 schools and directly resulted in 18,000 Christian conversions, as well as the establishment of more than 300 stations of work with more than 500 local helpers in all eighteen provinces. Taylor was known for his sensitivity to Chinese culture and zeal for evangelism. He adopted wearing native Chinese clothing even though this was rare among missionaries of that time. Under his leadership, the CIM was singularly non-denominational in practice and accepted members from all Protestant groups, including individuals from the working class and single women as well as multinational recruits. Primarily because of the CIM's campaign against the Opium trade, Taylor has been referred to as one of the most significant Europeans to visit China in the 19th Century. Historian Ruth Tucker summarises the theme of his life: "No other missionary in the nineteen centuries since the Apostle Paul has had a wider vision and has carried out a more systematised plan of evangelising a broad geographical area than Hudson Taylor." Taylor was able to preach in several varieties of Chinese, including Mandarin, Chaozhou, and the Wu dialects of Shanghai and Ningbo. The last of these he knew well enough to help prepare a colloquial edition of the New Testament written in it. From 1865-1953, China Inland Mission (CIM) missionaries worked throughout the country of China. It was a difficult, tumultuous time in the Middle Kingdom. Those years saw events such as the Boxer Rebellion, the fall of China’s last dynasty, a civil war, World War II and the founding of the Communist government. Through it all, the CIM persevered to become one of the largest and most respected mission agencies in China. Missionary work in the 19th and 20th centuries laid the foundation for the revival of the Chinese church in recent decades. Pray for China: http://www.operationworld.org/chna

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’" - Matthew 25:35-40 (ESV)
