     his focus is stolen away from his book by the soft creak of his door opening further than it’s ajar state he’d left it in.  the steps following are QUIET, but heavy.  an easy telltale to their owner. there’s only one person he can possibly pinpoint them to, and who would visit the sorcerer unexpectedly.  merlin sounds a hum, seemingly NAIVE of his presence as nimble fingers turn a page.  abruptly, he breaks the silence.   ❛   is there something that you need  ?   ❜

A  HUM  AT  THE  BACK  OF  HER  THROAT  –  amusement,  laughter,  a  quiet  mixture  of the  two.    “    i  see.    “    &  curiously  can’t  stop  herself  from  looking  over  the  features  of  his  face,  looking  for  signs  of  lies  or  trickery  (  though  she’s  not  particularly  surprised  when  she  finds  none,  either  ).    “    how…….    “    she  falls  momentarily  silent,  lips  pressing  together  in  thought,  nose  scrunching  slightly.  her  smile  is  quick  &  mischievous  &  smooths  out  fast  into  innocence.    “    VAIN.    “    her  laughter  is  quiet,  but  it  surprises  even  her  (  she  hasn’t  laughed  for  a  long  time  ).    “    well,  thank  you  for  being  so  polite.    “

     ❛    as long as i’m less vain than narcissus himself, i don’t see a problem with that.   ❜    the laughter is PLEASING.  it’s the only aspect of exuberance he’s seen from her.  given her situation, it’s unfathomable for her to have any at all.  fingers idly trace the ridges of a ring circling his finger, eyes lifting to the young woman.  the look matches his smile  ;  sincere and honest.  the lack of JEST within his being startles himself.  this was his goal, however.  alleviate the horrors for a moment.  this is why the state of her KINGDOM is kept tucked away behind the lie of serendipity.  should she awaken and discover his DECEPTION  ...  well, that’s a trouble for then, isn’t it ?   ❛    do you really question my face ?  it holds little importance within this exchange.  perhaps if i were a talking BIRD your inquiry would be more  ...  appropriate.  ❜
