Gonna take this ask as an opportunity to let you all know that recently, many spots have opened up in the @ask-rain-world-characters blog! So if any of you are interested in writing and voice acting some responses to a whole bunch of fun asks, then let me know ^-^ As Aj said, the Lizard cast in particular could very much use some expanding, and so could the Iterators. But in general, we'd be more than happy to welcome any Rain World creature, or character that you've had in mind! And if you specifically want a role that already has some asks in the inbox (by which, I mean asks that are entirely dedicated to just that character), then the list of options goes as follows:

Another amazing poll round behind us! Thank y'all again

A lil update abt the future and all

I had the idea to do a downpour+base and watcher polls crossover. Obviously it will not be every single room from those two, so i thought why not take all the rooms that got into the bracket rounds and pin those against each other.

With that its impostant to remember that while i will make the 1st round of this that every poll in that round be 1 downpour+base room vs 1 watcher room. With the other rounds there might be a lot of watcher vs watcher rooms ect polls. But I think it might be still fun to run and see where the watcher rooms will climb in comparison

So yeah gimme a week or a month. (I want fadebolt to rest a bit and everyone to get a lil rest from polling)

Congrats on pulling it through! While the winners may not have ended up as subversive as the previous ones, they're undoubtedly wonderful rooms that have very much earned their spots! ^^

The concept you came up with is pretty interesting. Naturally, there's no way to make an objective category of 'worthy' rooms, and featuring every room ever is simply out of the question (not only due to their excessive numbers, but also due to the redundancy factor).

But the great news is that we already have access to a bunch of results from previous tournaments. Which are definitely influenced by luck and biases, sure, but they still give us a solid indication of which rooms people consider to be the more noteworthy ones (even if you may have a couple outliers, that made it/didn't make it due to luck).

Featuring only the bracket rounds should make this a bit of a shorter one, but not every tournament needs to last for half a year (or more).

One thing I'm curious about, is whether or not we're gonna get some matchups that happened before - and if the new results are going to differ at all. I don't imagine there will be many, assuming that you're reshuffling stuff with a randomizer, instead of just putting the first Watcher room against the first basegame/DP one, the second against the second, the third against the third, and so on. But I'd be shocked if we won't get at least 1 or 2.

I honestly barely remember which rooms even made it to the last couple rounds in the previous tournament, so this should be interesting. Looking forward to seeing what you'll cook up.

Anyways, thanks a lot for providing this opportunity for all this Watcher appreciation! It's quite the fun campaign to talk about, with the drastic shift in both its design approach, and storytelling - especially as it's still making sure to maintain the essence of Rain World, and keeping it a fun game with a nice set of challenges and sights.

And I hope if we ever get a new official campaign, it'll end up going in such a unique direction too.

Or that it at least provides enough new rooms for a tournament ^w^

Well, here we are. It feels beyond strange that this entire thing is just ending like that - with no potential way for a continuation in sight, at least as of now.

I'd be shocked if we would never get any more official Rain World campaigns in the future, though I can also think of many other highly successful and well-received projects that didn't get continued in the same format again (Warcraft 3 got followed up with an MMO instead of an RTS, Gravity Falls got comics and novels instead of TV show seasons, etc). And Rain World might just end up like that too. And even if it doesn't, I'd be surprised if the next big release would drop anywhere before 2030.

Modded room polls would be cool, but the potential pool is way too large + it's even more niche than Watcher + I doubt that they have interactive maps anywhere. So unless you're really into the idea, I'm not even gonna try to entertain it (even if it would give me that push to look into them a lil more, beyond just watching my brother exploring region mods on Spearmaster).

I also suspect that you probably want to take a lil break from poll running after this, which would be totally understandable. But if you have any other ideas (perhaps for some smaller tournaments, such as for music, items, or colored pearls), or if you spot any other cool poll blogs that I could ramble under, then do let me know ^v^

Ahh, dammit, was hoping to see this one get a lil closer to the vote count of the previous. I honestly have no clue why it didn't, especially with it collecting a lil bit more reblogs. I guess some ppl might just like SHOP so much that they'd specifically show up to support it, while basically just ignoring anything else (and no shame for that, really).

Anyways, this poll allows us to either vote for one of the 3 big Ancient Urban moments that made it to the semifinals, or that long walk through a grassy field, during the 'Outer Expanse sequence' within the final ending. Quite the tough choice, as one might expect.

Thankfully, these two rooms are actually somewhat linked - not just in both being story-oriented rooms, but also in the fact that they both put a lot of focus in the idea of reminiscing about the past.

With some pretty fascinating contrast being present there. Since TOYS is a room that Spinning Top regards quite fondly, thinking back on it as a place that offered incredible comfort. Whereas TREE01 is a place of enormous trauma and loss for the Watcher, while also acting as the place that got them started in on this mad journey in the first place. It really is no coincidence that TOYS gets followed up by Watcher relishing in their continued existence, while TREE01 leads up to them finally deciding to let go, in favor of something new. These act as very natural conclusions, for what the rooms have been telling us. (Not to mention the game leaning back on its whole Cycle motif, with the characters visiting these locations, near the end of their journeys)

The main part where I feel like they differ, however, is their overall relevance to the narrative. While I did talk a lot about the significance of the spear in the leftmost screen, and how it's very much meant to allude to the intro cutscene, it is also somewhat of an 'Easter Egg' moment, that you might not catch onto immediately. Especially with it being just a small part of a big giant sequence that throws an incredible amount of things at you.

TOYS, on the other hand, feels much more focused and clear, in the things it wants you to get. Sure, there are city views, and void baths, and shops showing Ancients walking by, but things are paced pretty nicely, so that you get a lil break, before the campaign shows you this bombshell of a room reveal at you. And it does help a ton, how everything important is immediately apparent - and while the room does have its fair share of details and extra flair, they more so act as 'bonus additions', instead of being the main things that give the room its meaning.

Does that mean TREE01 failed in its design? No, not at all, it's just that by virtue of what it is, it cannot really do that much more, than:

having stunning visuals

showing off some neat plants you haven't really seen before (super tall background grass)

referencing the intro cutscene

possibly doing a subtle tie-in to Outer Rim, via the long walk that leads into a tall structure with vines you'll have to climb, and a big orb at the top (which may or may not be a big stretch, but I'd like to think it was intended)

There's obviously the fact that you can only do so much, with a grass field next to Watcher's old home. And to give credit where credit is absolutely due, this room basically pulled as much as it possibly could, from its concept.

Which is why it feels quite interesting to see this somewhat straightforward idea getting matched up against the bedroom of the Echo we've been following for most of the campaign, which is filled with absolutely endless potential that the devs thoroughly explored in interesting ways.

Even a small detail, such as the color of its background wall, already tells us so much about this place, and the old civilization. And don't get me started on the use of lighting, both in the Spinning Top encounter, as well as the ending cutscene. Or the buildup climb. Or the things we see in the cutscene. Or even the designs of the toys themselves.

Truthfully, I'd feel incredibly cheap, if I were to vote for TOYS. With how the poll is basically nothing but Ancient Urban, at this point.

But also, I'm just not sure if that tree room could reasonably keep up. There's a few other rooms where I absolutely could've made a potential argument (the most significant one definitely being Outer Rim's AI), but if my previous 1v1 reblogs are anything to go by, TREE01 simply didn't catch me all that much. Sure, I do have appreciation for some of the things it's going for. And it does have its interesting aspects, as well as a pretty awesome use of colors and composition, in a lot of its screens. But also, once you discover what that leftmost screen was, you've basically got everything the room has to offer.

And yeah, it is nice to have an explicit confirmation on what this place is - as well as to have it add more context to the Rot Quest dream, you also have to factor in that the game has already done the heavy lifting through other places/means, when it comes to this story thread. Compared to TOYS, essentially having to singlehandedly carry Spinning Top's story, with some mild assistance from a few other rooms.

In reality, I don't think you can really make an 'objective' choice on this one. Even the things I've said, are not really appropriate representations of the successes and failures of these designs - I was simply speaking about the concepts they're looking to execute. And whether or not we should factor a concept, or just the execution, is a whole another thing. (And very obviously, we do factor concepts, cus we didn't really have 'perfectly executed' miniscule filler rooms within the 1v1s now, did we? The question of "How much impact would it have, if the room were to be deleted?" is a highly valid one here, I feel. And it just so happens to be the main thing that gives TOYS its edge)

But honestly, I can't really think of many other metrics to go by, beyond just thinking on which idea spoke to you better, or stuck with you more (or the aforementioned 'delete question'). And for me, it was easily the toy room.

I guess you could also go for whatever you find more visually appealing… though that wouldn't really change anything for me. While I do like the Outer Expanse aesthetics, the grassy and jungle-y parts never hit that hard for me, personally. (I'm mostly in favor of the watery rooms, as well as the ones where you see remnants of the old structures. But neither of these two categories apply for TREE01, so yeah)

As a final sendoff, here are the cinematic appearances of these two:

Not gonna lie, it's pretty interesting to see how these places are interpreted, through two vastly different artstyles.

Especially with the subtle adjustments to the color schemes within the cutscenes, based on Watcher's emotional state. You can also see it in how much brighter TREE02 looks in the cutscenes, which I think I already addressed in its polls. It's neat stuff, for sure ^-^

#Though yeah... I do feel a lil bad for all you TREE01 enthusiasts #Realistically - I probably should've voted on it in some of its matchups #And the fact that I didn't mostly came down to bias for sure #Yet it still reached the top 4 in spite of that #Which is an absolutely impressive feat that really does speak to its quality #You simply don't get this far on accident #As for the Ancient Urban thing... it actually kinda makes sense in a way #I already talked about it a bunch before but yeah #It cannot be understated just how much that region does for the DLC.#Sure - the gameplay gets saved by places like Signal Spires and Stormy Coast and Rusted Wrecks and such #But AU is the moment where the story really gripped me. So. One of the very last matchups, huh?

It's pretty fitting, that both of these are Ancient Urban rooms, since that very much appeared to be the one Watcher area that people found the most memorable.

Partially because it did have a very unique flair to it, in a way that I'd honestly compare it to Five Pebbles, of all places (which was easily the most unique and memorable area of the basegame… even if none of its rooms ended up as tournament winners xd). This is because Five Pebbles is thrown into a campaign that has been fairly grounded, up to that point - offering you amazing contrast, with a design that feels entirely alien. A place that is clearly beyond you, and one that feels like you weren't meant to be visiting.

Ancient Urban represents a bit of an opposite dynamic. With Watcher's campaign being centered all around the supernatural aspects of the world, as well as all sorts of weird locations across space and time - this was the one place that was really meant to feel grounded, and familiar, in a sense. It also happens to have really strong ties to the emotional core of the campaign, in how it manages to link in very well to Watcher, while still being primarily about Spinning Top.

There are three rooms that do the main heavy-lifting for this, and fittingly, all three of them made it to the quarterfinals.

Putting them against each other is rather interesting, as they're all very integral parts of their narrative chain:

SHOP shows you that in spite everything, both you and Top are still just some tiny aspects of a whole vast world that will keep moving on, whether you're there to observe it, or not.

BATH shows Top's acceptance of that fact, and the ability to finally move on from it, which is then represented by the candles flickering out (which could also be an indication that despite how it seems, there are still things around you that your presence/absence shall have a large impact on).

And TOYS shows how Watcher deals with it, relishing in the possibilities their existence provides, no matter how uncaring or unimpactful it may be. (With Top's reminiscing on the prior visit reinforcing this)

This whole narrative sticks, specifically because the designs of each and every one of these rooms is carefully constructed to aid in the story they're trying to tell. While also attempting to sneak in plenty of other details, to give these places depth. Whether they're hidden jokes (Ogscule and Enot pup face in TOYS), neat additions, to flesh things out (mask designs in SHOP), or possible tie-ins (BATH's similarities to Depths, as well as it being a kind of place that was mentioned before), they all offer lots more value, to their rooms.

What you're going to pick is going to probably depend on which room's details you find more interesting. And while SHOP might technically give you more things to chew on, I actually found BATH's design elements to be far more intriguing, in the grand scheme of things. Not to mention the significant visual changes as a result of a cutscene. How could you possibly compete with that?

Well… through a lot of ways, since it kind of got beaten badly xd

I'd say that the primary reason is that SHOP's reveal of moving Ancient silhouettes that you can see in person, feels like a faaaaaar bigger one, than a place that is essentially 'Depths lite'. Also, the animation on those guys is legitimately awesome. It's smooth, the lighting is handled super well, and the game gives them lots of different designs (mostly mixing up their masks, and their heights). Whereas BATH is just entirely static, minus the candles going out, after the Echo's ascension.

And to be completely honest, I did find SHOP more memorable after my playthrough, as well. It's more so that when I look at these rooms through more analytical lens, I find BATH's output to be much more meaningful to dig into, whereas a large chunk of SHOP is essentially fluff.

But if you're not putting these places under a microscope? Yeah, SHOP all the way! (And even if you are, you could absolutely make some arguments for it, as I have demonstrated)

I find it kinda funny how a poll like this could be so decisive. But if anything, that just really goes to show the immense amount of love people have for this place. And I'd be shocked if TREE01/TOYS is gonna stand any chance here.

But as usual, I guess we'll see ^-^

Honestly, when I first saw this matchup, I was immediately feeling like "wait a minute, haven't we done this already?". But nope, we haven't. It's just that these two rooms showed up in round 5 so recently, that the wait time for their reappearances was like, what, 3-4 days? Roughly about what you'd expect on a redo. But I just love how my brain is able to pull false alarms like that xd

Surprisingly, this one isn't actually a very difficult choice for me. And if you've seen any of my previous choices and comments on the past polls of TREE06 and TOYS, then you probably know that there's simply no way I'm picking the tree room over the toy one here. Its storytelling simply isn't anywhere near as compelling or interesting as TOYS', and its visuals aren't really that much prettier, either (I do believe it looks nicer, but not by a lot… plus, that also kind of makes sense, story-wise).

Obviously, I still very much appreciate a lot of the symbolism that TRRE06 does. The cyclical feel it gives to the story, the shape that feels somewhat reminiscent of Daemon and/or the Prince, and this somewhat 'confined' look, tying into the reveal that at the end of the day, Watcher was still only tied to one of countless Daemons. There's a lot of very cool things here. But also… I'm not entirely sure, on how much of it was intentional.

I've been doing a ton of reading into a bunch of different rooms, these past couple weeks. And while Rain World is absolutely the kind of game that wants us to do that, there's really no way to know for sure, what was on the mind of the devs, when they designed an area.

Of course, the meaning you see behind art does not have to be a 1 to 1 match with the artist's intent. If a writer randomly described that the curtains are blue, "just because", it doesn't mean that your teacher was 'wrong' to read into them as an external representation of a character's isolation or depression (I'd more so disagree with the idea of forcing students to blindly stick with that interpretation, as is it was a scientific fact, but that's a whole another thing). So even if TREE06 was meant to be nothing but a neat callback with no thematic or narrative significance whatsoever, we can still absolutely read that stuff into it just fine.

But the thing is that there's still that bit of doubt, on whether or not it's a worthwhile thing that we were meant to do, or if we're simply wasting our time, looking for something that isn't actually there. No such doubts exist within TOYS, however. Sure, we can't be 100% certain about any of this, but that room's design elements feel so much more deliberate, when it comes to how we were meant to read into them.

And sure, you do have an easier time making a meaningful design for a bedroom, than a tree. But if we assume that this was Watcher's childhood nest, then that really shouldn't be the case. Little hints and touches on how our Slugcats affect their environments (think Spearmaster's shelter drawing in Underhang, or LttM having a Cloak and 7 Neurons post Monk) can really tell us a lot about them, and no matter what significance you might be able to read into the tree, you can't deny that this element is entirely absent from it. (Which doesn't have to be a bad thing, if you interpret this as part of a message that it's better for Watcher to observe, than to meddle with things. But again, whether or not we were meant to do this is very ambiguous, so who knows if that was really the case)

So yeah, as much as I adore both of these rooms, the toy one just doesn't have any of the complications that the tree nest does, whenever I try to analyze it. RW's more cryptic stuff is cool and all, but I believe the game is at it's strongest when it's being direct (hence why people often cite Moon's chamber/Random Gods/the FP city view as the powerful moments of Survivor, rather than the Echoes or Depths).

Because of this, I'm sticking with TOYS. And unless I'm really missing something here, I don't think I could be convinced to switch, on this one.

#I apologize to any TREE06 fans... I didn't exactly treat your room the best xd #It's really one of those cases where I was absolutely blown away by it the first time I've seen it #Only to find it much less compelling when I was later looking at it through more analytical lens #Which is a bit unusual for me. If something gets great initial reactions out of me then I usually try and lean in on that #By exploring what it did great so - to end up producing said great reactions #Rather than going “Aaaaactually I realized I don't like this now sry :p”. That'd just feel... wrong and dismissive #And with TREE06 especially #Being a room that made it to the quarterfinals and all #Just know that my reluctance to vote on it wasn't meant to be a consequence of low quality #But rather: the room not going as above and beyond as some others #It provides what it needs to - for the emotional hit to happen... and that's it. And it could've gone soooooo much further than that #Regardless #I congratulate the room and all its voters for going this far #And I do agree that its concept and timing is absolutely stellar.
