The linked article
This article is genuinely insane. I learned to read at the same time and it was completely different. I was taught to sound out the words and if I came across a word I didn't know, they did suggest we use context clues to figure out the meaning, but it was also made clear that that was not a perfect solution and the best option is always to look it up. But seriously, just a memorizing? That is inside.
I taught English as a second language for over ten years. In order to become a proficient reader in English, most kids will need to be explicitly taught phonics. To become proficient in Japanese, you need to learn radicals.
Three-cueing is essentially crutches that help you get by but let you down eventually. It's very common when learning a foreign language, I misread kanji sometimes because I pattern-recognize based on context instead of really looking. The solution is to do some proper studying, but I don't wanna.
It's also interesting that this sort of contexual confabulation and pattern-recognizing is how LLMs work. Not sure what to do with that.
Absolutely fantastic article, but I do want to say that this...?
... Is absolutely terrifying in the context of all other anti-intellectualism happening right now. This guy is STILL pushing his 'observations' while denying evidence that it doesn't work.
#the part where he says it doesn’t matter if a child reads horse instead of pony bc the meaning is the same is.. particularly dire 💀#it’s immediately obvious that this doesn’t work as soon as books don’t have pictures in them ???
Good thing that there aren't any texts where subtle differences in meaning are important or anything like that.
ALSO HE DOESN'T BELIEVE IN DYSLEXIA
Some other scary screenshots!
I think that this is a runner up for the scariest section:
This last one comes pretty early. But I think this should get the medal of being the scariest. It's short. It's simple. It's like the poison dart frog you see on a leaf. Which is why I am only showing it know.
I think you needed to marinate a bit, but also I think it's a great jumpscare to realise that this was in roughly the first third. This was not some type of final, terrible secret only found when wading deep. They will readily admit this, no not only that, this is part of the sales pitch!!!
You read (or heard) it folks! Actually knowing the text through reading is over, bye bye!
But to be more serious here. You will, as a human being, inevitably come across many topics that you may not be familiar with. Now, a cute romance book or light reading novels might not be very complex and therefore not have too many issues cropping up due to you not understanding something.
However, daily live, vital parts of it, are constantly made up of complex topics. Imagine, your whole basis on understanding text hinges on trying to equate this new word with an old word. The example of pony into horse has it's issues already, but if you are currently reading only for fun, this is not world ending.
This comes to it's disasterous end when you:
Have to navigate legal documents.
Have to navigate forms for various important things like job applications or higher education.
And especially:
Navigating medical topics.
Medicine is already a difficult thing. In german one of the popular dictionary brands called Duden has a whole dictionary specific to medical terms, word structure (pre- and suffixes and more) and even abbreviations. This is because medicine is not only a highly complex topic, but also because a lot of the words have direct latin or english roots. This makes something like Three-cueing very difficult.
Many new words, but they are completly alien. Aortic dissection? Thrombosis? Diabetes? What can you possibly find with the same inital that would fit the meaning of these words?
The way this method is decribed does not sound to me like a competent and confident native speaker. As someone who accompanied many immigrants to medical stuff "as a family friend" for translating the german speaking staff, this sounds like when they have just learned the very basic first things on the language and are trying desperatly to understand by themselves what a doctor, nurse or pharmacist is saying.
Similarly, this first impulse to find an equivalent or similar word being trained into you is terrible. It should be you trying to understand the word based on words and structures and phonics you know. And if this fails it should be to ask the person in front of you in the clinic waiting for you to read the sheet that tells you of the risk of anesthesia. It should be looking up and learning new words. It should be asking for someone to say a sentence out loud for you. It should be that you get help if you need it.
Not to simply guess, skip and hide the lack of understanding and avoid all texts.
This instinct is very similar to a behaviour common with people that are (functionally) illiterate. Due to the largely existing disdain against people like this and the ridicule everyone offers if not being able to do a supposedly easy/basic thing quickly turns into hiding the illiteracy by attempting to make out some words, listening closly to what the other person said additionally and repeating it back, or simply nodding along. And most importantly: never asking. This draws attention. It would mean that their secret is revealed. There are a lot more people who are functionally illiterate than you belive. They normally hide. But they are affected by it daily.
This turns into people going for decades not being able to properly read, driven by shame. This is very destructive to their lives. Any text is a foreign thing, never to be understood. Forms, books, notes and writing become almost to completely insurmountable obstacles, driving the avoidance even further. Not going to the doctor's office because you won't understand the notes they give you and the forms you need to fill. Not being able to properly navigate a new place by reading street signs. Not being able to get a drivers license.
The only way out is getting the oppertunity and accepting it. This is very difficult, especially if the illiteracy has been present for decades. Behaviour has been driven in, like not asking for help or clarification, since this could expose you as not being able to understand what is written. Other factors like not having gone to school, poverty, working in jobs where this is never apparent (making hiding seem easier for the person than attempting to try and find a way out), living in very isolated conditions, isolation in general and bad experiences when asking for help only add to this.
A child learning to read should never be taught these behaviours. A child that is taught this will have difficulty later on due to self reinforcing behaviour. They will not ask for clarification, not understand something like an assignment, try to wing it based on what they think the assignment says, hide this and not consider asking questions, fail, will get scolded or the bad result alone is enough to trigger shame, this shame will make it even less likely that they ask for help now or later, etc.
This is a spiral that can, unless they break out of it themselves or are lucky to get someone who recognises this and helps them (and they accept), only go downwards.
You should not basically set a child on it as if it was a rollercoaster.
The people making millions of profits off of school districts buying their bullshit should be completley exposed as profiting off something increadibly vital to life as we live it and be barred from selling or even being seen as a proper source. Actual scientific validity of what is taught to teachers should be questioned a lot more.
This happens because the people who can directly intervene are completly clueless. Meanwhile the people who believe they are right against all evidence can just live in their la-la-land, completly unaffected.
This should not be happening.
I think disability justice would be easier if abled people understood that being disabled is a mixture of all three of
I can’t do that without negative consequences
I can’t do that unless I have support for it
I can’t do that
and that trying to treat one of these as if it’s another one will get you nowhere.
um so quick question you do know that the world isn’t divided into People Blindly Accepting Of Gender Roles and Smart Trans Ppl. the world isn’t divided into People In Romantic Relationships and Single Aros. the world isn’t divided into People Who Socialize Easily and Oppressed Autistics. the world isn’t divided into Enlightened Queer People and Stupid Misogynists. like you are aware of this ? i hope you are aware of this
If youre a closeted person somewhere out there thinking "I want to transition but it would be less progressive/unique/countercultural for me to be that gender instead of this one" please know that you are a real person not a character in a narrative and cant live your life based on what is good media representation. You are real you can only be yourself and theres no moral weight to any identity over another
Liberal transphobes enjoy positioning trans identities as regressive compared to cis queerness or like non-transitioning transness or anything else they can leverage to make transphobia look progressive and I think its easy to absorb that message subconciously. But in real life we just are what we are and no ranking of validity can change the fact that you have an identity that is NOT chosen and is just your unchangeable truth. Not only should you not have to live a life dictated by what is most countercultural to identify as or whatever but also: being trans is extremely countercultural and feminist and leftist to begin with and theyre only trying to convince you otherwise bc theyre bigots
You actually just have to accept that it is possible for people in your social group to be abusers even if you are not literally Jeffrey Epstein and in fact even if you have no money and all of the odds stacked against you.
It is true that money and power enables abuse on a grand scale, but the converse is not true— having no money and no power does not make abuse less likely. I think many of us know this from experience. There is no special moral quality to being poor or being oppressed. Oppressed people abuse each other all the fucking time, in families and relationships and friendships. People of color abuse each other. Women abuse each other. Gay people and trans people abuse each other.
Cesar Chavez raped the women and girls of the labor rights movement throughout his career, using worker solidarity as a bludgeoning tool to ensure their silence.
If you say “people in my group don’t do this, it’s the powerful men that do it” then you harm yourself in several ways.
1. You signal to your social circle that you do not hold them to any standard of behavior. You have preemptively pledged loyalty, which means that if they behave objectionably, any objection on your part will mean a betrayal of your community.
2. You mark yourself as socially permissive. People in your social group know that you are, at baseline, unwilling to accept or act on allegations against them. To be frank, this makes you very easy to take advantage of, whether in service of abusing someone else or abusing you directly.
And you harm other people by telling a lie. What about all of the people who have been abused by a person within this oppressed group? They have it reiterated that their abuse cannot be spoken about, for the sake of solidarity.
Everybody on this earth has the potential to do immeasurable harm to another person just as they have the potential to do good. You can— and in fact I would say you must— advocate and fight for the rights of your people without making yourself into a useful tool for bad actors within your community.
cis women you gotta be more self aware at how obvious your disgust with trans men is sometimes. like I dont think you realize how blatant you very often are while still thinking yourself an ally
a trans man adding to your post about feminism and misogyny with his own experiences is not mansplaining to you. if your reaction to a trans man relating to you and comparing his similar experience is for you to be like "this is actually about women. women only zone" despite trans men living most of our lives as women and continuing to experience misogyny AND transphobia after transitioning, the message is very clear. you dont care about our lives, you dont care about us, you probably dont truly trust or like any trans person, and you aren't worth trusting
I know we’re all like lawless nonconformists but you really can’t be texting and driving. that’s one of the ones you’ve gotta listen to for real
Not even at stoplights!!! I know it’s so so tempting to just glance at your phone when you’re stopped, but there’s actually something called “distraction hangover” where even once you put your phone down, your brain is still processing the interaction and isn’t fully paying attention to the road for up to 30 seconds afterwards. So it’s still really dangerous even if you’re stopped when you look at your phone. If you need to check something on your phone, pull over.
this especially applies to people with adhd. you know that symptom you may have heard of called “difficulty transitioning between tasks”? you don’t want piloting a ton or two of potential death to be the task you can’t mentally switch back to.
do you think the catholic church effectively utilized wokeness by funneling money into the colonization and rape of the americas after issuing the doctrine of discovery which effectively legalized the subjugation of indigenous peoples?

if anyone wants to help out a black disabled artist who's been severely struggling today, my pay links will be below 👇🏾 i recently learned the source of most of my pain & chronic symptoms is due to a congenital absence of my inferior vena cava, and the symptoms have been progressively worsening my quality of life, so i haven't been able to work and have no money and i'm waiting on a decision for my 6th attempt at applying for disability benefits. 🥳 please share this if you don't have the means to help out!

Today in australia they started senate hearings on the bill the government hopes will make enough disabled people die or disappear to make us all less irritatingly expensive for them. We had two weeks to submit feedback on over 400 pages of complicated legal terms. They don't care what we have to say and they don’t care that this will kill people and disenfranchise disabled people across the country.
There are 760,000 Australians on the National Disability Insurance Scheme, the system that - if they feel like it and your personalised plan says you get to have it - provides funding for everything from personal hygiene care to support workers to therapies to assistive technology. It's already very hard for disabled people to get on the NDIS, regardless of your disability. It's near impossible to access most support and equipment without being on the NDIS. And the government has announced that they want that number to drop to 600,000 in four years. 160,000 of us cut off the Scheme - and countless more denied access. This will cause deaths. People will die and people will suffer because there is no safety net. The NDIS is the only option for most of us. Even private health insurance doesn't cover most of these things. Nobody will swoop in to save us.
The bill wants to give the (non disabled!) NDIS minister basically unlimited power to cut our funding. They're already planning what they'd do with that power. What rights they'll strip from us. What dignity and freedom they'll remove to make their budget look better.
The bill wants to force people to try every treatment out there before they're allowed to be on the NDIS. Including if the treatment is literally impossible to access. There’s a lot of us living in regional areas or out bush who can't just pop to the capital cities for specialists. This will especially hurt disabled First Nations people in regional and remote communities, who already experience limited access to healthcare. Oh, and it includes chemical restraint, too. The government has directly refused to exclude chemical restraint from the required process, calling it "trialling medication".
If you're australian and worried, the ABC did a good breakdown of the proposed changes.
I know australia stuff doesn't really pop up on the radar on this site, but I want everyone to know what's going on. What we're fighting for here. Your australian disabled friends might be NDIS participants fearing for their life, rights, and freedom. They might not be a participant and afraid these changes mean they never will have access. We deserve better. The government built a system with no backup plan, and now they want hundreds of thousands of disabled people to pay the price for their bad planning.
Sorry we're too expensive to have rights, I guess.
Some additions, from the notes and also context:
- Nobody needs to apologise for venting in the notes or reblogs. We're scared and upset and deserve to be heard.
What to do:
- australians: don't give up! There's still people fighting this, it's not law yet. And even if it passes we can fight them on it. Most disabled peoples' organisations are fighting this, so organisations like People With Disability Australia and area specific groups. Membership to most of them is free if you're disabled. PWDA sends out a list of the news about us each week to keep us informed.
🔗Disabled People Against Cuts are leading a charge. There's always a way to make politicians pay attention even if we have to park our arses on their front step. Share support and resources where you can and keep an eye on the others in your community if you're able to. Talk to local support clinics about Coles and Woolworths vouchers for those facing a lot of uncertainty. And get your flu shot if you're able. Nobody needs the next protest to give everyone the flu.
- non-australians: keep watching. You might also benefit from seeing what DPAC are doing and if they ever call for international support. Supporting the disabled australians you know and refusing to be kept in the dark about what’s being done to marginalised people internationally is good preparation for lots of ways to help, it means you're ready to go if something you can help with appears and don't lose time educating yourself. Many of the situations with the NDIS have deliberately had short time frames to act, to try and stop us from having a voice.
context from the notes:
- When I said health insurance doesn't cover disability supports, I don't mean "it's very expensive so people can't access it". I mean the services often won't take on anyone who doesn't have an NDIS plan. Even then, it's common for services to prefer people who are "plan managed" or "agency managed", meaning someone else handles our invoices, because they feel "self managed" people might not pay them fast enough.
- People have been getting "check in" phone calls from the agency. It’s secretly plan reviews for them to reduce people's funding. If they call you and you don’t have your support people with you, they are lying when they say you don't need them. Tell them to organise a time to call later so you can have your support people. This kind of warning is the only reason I knew to contact my support coordinator when I got this phone call. Others I have seen didn't know and got their plan cut. And it takes years to try and change a plan or appeal it through the tribunal.
- Someone in the notes has identified herself as a support coordinator and offered to help with questions for people concerned about their plan via DMs (thank you @andromedusia). This is very kind of her and I also hope mentioning this here doesn't cause you any trouble, very sorry if it does.
- Also, not thrilled to find out they might be phasing out support coordinators. Lots of us are dependent on them - a support coordinator is someone who helps us understand out plan and connect with supports, and often helps with advocacy too. They’ll save money on us purely because we won't know where to go or what the plans mean. They use a lot of confusing terms in the plans. I'd be screwed without my support coordinator.
- Oh they also want to use a standardised assessment tool to tell how disabled we are, after a decade of having to pay out of pocket for specialists who know us to provide reports. This is actually worse because the tool doesn’t have to be done by a qualified professional and doesn’t work on people with a lot of different disabilities. The government is very good at somehow turning "bad" into "worse".
- Yeah. 760,000 australians is actually not that many. There's 27 million people living here. 85% of disabled australians aren't on the NDIS. Now, a lot of disabled people don't necessarily need the kind of support the NDIS provides, but you know who I don't trust to make that decision? The government who doesn't want to pay for it.
- None of this fixes the existing problems with access for First Nations people or people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. I'm pretty sure a standardised assessment tool will actually only make that way worse. No room for professionals to work with cultural sensitivity and humility to understand the impact of someone's disability, or the varying ways First Nations communities may construct and talk about disability that don't necessarily align with the settler government's convenient definition. Just checkboxes.
- This isn't even our "conservative" government party in power. This is the centre/centre-left party, Labor. The 'Liberal party' (note: not liberal) would likely do worse. But I don't think there's much to be grateful for when this will kill people. And probably won't stop later conservative cuts anyway. Because we cost too much.
It means a lot to see people care about what's happening here. Thank you for paying attention and getting angry with us. Because we're angry and scared and have a right to be heard that the government is doing its best to not have to hear.
I would like to add that the estimate of 160k people was conservative and new estimates put it at as high as 300k people needing to be kicked off the scheme to "control costs" I cannot overstate how devastating these proposed changes would be to the lives of disabled people.
300,000 of us kicked off the only system that funds basic care and support. The ABC says a further 110,000 people will have their applications refused entirely. I think that's probably also a conservative estimate too.
There's been a lot of resistance to the proposed changes. They don't have much support aside from the vile types. I hope that it will be enough to protect us.
intersex culture is looking at diagram after diagram and STILL not finding one that resembles your genitalia

Also I am begging people that aren't impacted by orientalism to actually listen to the people who are about why we may not like the term yume. People will come up with every single thing they can to try to justify their use of the term and I'm sorry, but you should maybe stop and think about why it is that you see no issue with it when Asian people have repeatedly explained what the issue with the explosion in popularity of the term yume specifically is. Yume is a specific subculture online but it's an Asian subculture, and a lot of non-Asians have co-opted that while misusing terms related to it. Nobody is going to force you at gun point to stop using the term, but please consider why it is that you might immediately get defensive about your use of it when others have talked about how its popularity is a product of cultural appropriation
