Thinking about how Bella Swan is a strong and well-defined character who knows exactly what she wants. How all the suffering she endures throughout the saga comes from other people telling her "No, actually I know what's best for you, let me save you from this bad decision." How she proves them all wrong by getting her happily ever after anyway. How it's even better than she imagined it would be, both for herself and basically every other character involved. How the reaction from a large portion of the audience is STILL "ugh, but the relationship is so unhealthy, she really made a bad choice." How people make exactly the same complaint about every other fairytale where a woman gets what she wants.
Tips on how to curate a good fandom experience?
get some gross sicko pals to be a gross sicko with. having at least one or two who you can be a hater with too is a must. helps you save face from airing your grieviances in public. and honestly nothing more satisfying that sending some stupid shit into the group chat being like "lmao u seeing this???".
stay away from anybody who acts like fandom is serious business/activism
never feel like you need to justify your likes/dislikes to some dumb cunt on the internet
something making you uncomfortable isn't the end of the world & often it's actually quite good to examine your own discomfort/disgust and what it stems from. builds character.
block/mute/unfollow at the drop of a hat
make sure to cultivate your interests outside of fandom and read things other than fic, this one, i'd say, is ESSENTIAL

you mentioned executive dysfunction in your tortoise post. as a fellow sufferer, wondering if you have any tips for writing. or perhaps living.
Hi friend! I will do my best!
The first thing I will suggest may or may not be accessible, so apologies if itâs really not: that would be going to therapy. I love therapy. It has been the spring from which all the wisdom Iâve gleaned from this has flowed. But itâs been internalizing it myself (the work I do outside of therapy) that has made the difference.
So, just some small (but actually big) things that have helped me.
Write it down. The thing you want to do but are struggling to do? Get yourself a planner and write it down. For me, a paper planner that sits right next to my chair and is open at all times to the week that it actually is right now, is the thing. If I have goals for the week, I will write them in on certain days. I try not to overburden myself and go overboard. I try to make these manageable things that wonât make me feel like Iâm just using up all my free time that Iâm not spending at work working at other things I donât like. But this is also where I write down the things I really do want to do but that may be hard because of That Thing. That executive dysfunction that pops up even when I want to be doing the thing.
Check off the things you get done. I canât explain the power of a checkmark, but it helps. Itâs a tiny celebration and acknowledgement that you did the thing. This is crucial.
Break up big things into smaller pieces. If your goal is to write a research paper, no itâs not. Itâs to open the document. Boom! Checkmark! The next goal is maybe to put five of the quotes you want to use into the doc. Boom! Maybe a good goal is to write 500 words on something that will eventually be 5-10k. Make your goals smaller and then celebrate them as you check them off! There really is something to the saying âslow and steady wins the raceâ. Itâs certainly getting there quicker than not doing anything at all.
Perfectionism sucks. Abandon it. Excellence is good. But so is 'good enoughâ. Sometimes doing something badly for the time being is actually good enough. Want to write a novel? Give yourself permission to write a bad one. Thatâs how you get one written at all honestly.
I keep track of my word count in my planner first and foremost, and then I plug those numbers into the Get Your Words Out (@gywo) excel spreadsheet. It helps to SEE your progress and to track it. It shows you it can be done and YOU are the one whoâs doing it. Proof that you can do the thing is awesome!
If the thing is cleaning, for fuckâs sake put some music on! And then just clean This Table Right Here. Donât set out to do the whole room. Do this corner. When youâve done that corner, celebrate with a little dance or a fist pump and then pick a different corner. Take a break and do one of the other things on your list, like writing 200 words of fanfiction. Make a cup of tea.
Have grace with yourself. You are human. This is hard. Developing healthy habits takes time. You will make mistakes. You will backtrack into unhealthy behavior patters. But you will also get better at recognizing them, at seeing yourself do it, and then getting yourself back to where you want to be instead. Grace. Extend it to yourself like you would to someone you love very dearly and gently and sweetly. Become, slowly, the person you feel most like that about.
These are the ways I know. Others will have their own ways to share and I welcome anyone to do that here! I hope this helps. Give it a little practice and a little time. Take small steps. Celebrate each little thing. Be curious about this process rather than beating yourself up. This is not easy stuff. But working on it and through it is worth it.
Much love to you in this and all things! <3
These are all such good tips!!!
As an Occupational Therapist who also has executive dysfunction, here are a couple of other tips.
Make yourself a visual schedule. Write it on a whiteboard, make a pretty poster in Canva and stick it to your wall. Whatever works best for you. Put things that you have to do daily on your schedule, in order. Unless having specific times really works for you, leave it off. It just becomes one more thing that you have to meet. Just list the things you need to do in order. Youâve gotten out of bed? Great! Go to your schedule and see what you have to do next. This way you donât have to think - just follow the pretty poster
Find someone to be accountable to. Send a message to a friend and say âIâm going to do x thing for x minutes. Can you check in with me at the end to see how Iâve gone?â Donât attach value to whether youâve met the goal or not - youâre not letting anyone down if you got distracted. But Iâve found that it helps to have someone to check in with that isnât your own brain
Sprints are your best friend! They can be as long or short as you like. I saw someone sprint for 60 seconds the other day! If youâre in one of the fandom discord servers itâs highly likely they have a sprint channel. If not, set yourself a timer. Write as hard as you can until it ends. Donât worry about quality - editing is for the end of the fic. Just let yourself write for however long works for you
Tab groups! I recently discovered this and itâs so helpful! If you have google chrome, you can group your browser tabs into specific sections/topics. Iâm pretty sure other browsers do this too. You can close the groups you arenât using so all you see is the group name. It has made such a difference for me. I can hide distracting tabs - like Facebook and discord - and also reduce the amount of tabs Iâm looking at at any one time. I have a group for uni, for writing and for just general âfunâ things
If youâre really struggling to start/do a task, stop. Walk away from it. The more you try to force it, the worse it will get. Sometimes our brains just donât want to cooperate and thatâs ok. Try something else. Go for a walk, make a cup of tea, read a comfort fic, watch an episode of that Netflix show you love. Be kind to your brain
The biggest tip I can give is this: it isnât one size fits all. Everyone is different and what works for one doesnât work for another. Play around with different strategies and find what works for you. And as lqt said, give yourself some grace and love. Your executive function has no impact on your worth as a person or a writer. And donât let it convince you otherwise
I love the advice from Georgie and Lqt, two of my very favorite fandom friends and writers and people.
Still, if youâre like me, schedules and calendars are just. Not always realistic. I wish I could keep up with them, I really do. But in all honesty, I get so frustrated because I either get WAY too bogged down in making my entries perfect (especially if theyâre written out on paper oh my GOD) or just getting everything in there that I get burned out and canât do anything for a few hours after.
My strategy is to follow my hyperfocus. I cannot force myself to focus, no matter how much coffee I drink or meds I take. If my brain doesnât want to focus it wonât.
So I let it go where it needs to. I get the dopamine rush I need to fulfill my impulse. And then once I have enough dopamine or serotonin to be satisfied, I try and do the Thing I havenât done yet.
Alsoooo: figure out TIMING!! Figure out what your patterns are, if you have any (like if you need a reminder 30 minutes or an hour before you have to do something, set it accordingly. Allow yourself space for procrastination if needed; like setting multiple alarms that you know youâll snooze so youâre up and ready by the time you actually need to be.)
Also with timingâif you take meds, figure out the best time to take them so they are most effective for you. Do the same with food/meals/snacks. Same with caffeine, if thatâs an option for you. Experiment with different times of day to where you drink it at a time when it helps you be alert and ready, but not where youâre up all night.
I also take full advantage of whenever my hyperfocus wants to kick in. It means I get kinda burned out sometimes, so I try to stay in touch with my body and energy levels and needs, but hyperfocus can make me feel like a superhero so I enjoy it when it comes.
mutual pining fanfic is the best fanfic simply because it requires the characters to be at their most romantic and the height of their stupidity at all times

I just saw the most Galaxy Brain gender take ever, from a cis man on reddit
[ID: a screenshot of a comment from reddit, with no username visible. The commend reads: This doesnât make a ton of sense to me either. Setting aside the question of whether gender/sex is assigned or observed at birth, the gender I was assigned at birth was âboy.â The gender I have now is âmanâ. Boys and men have different gender roles, and few adults identify as boys anymore. From this standpoint, every adult has a different gender than the one they had at birth. End ID]
Framing âgirlâ and âboyâ as separate genders from âwomanâ and âmanâ is such an amazing take. itâs a framework that accommodates and explains so many trans experiences. Some trans people never were their AGAB. Some feel like they were their AGAB, but that that changed (usually when puberty hits, which is when you start âbecoming a man/womanâ. The accepted societal path is that girls grow up to into women, and boys grow up into men. But some girls grow up into men, and some boys grow up into women. This guy was a boy who grew up into a man, which generally works out pretty well for people. Some boys and girls grow up into people who arenât men or women, even! Itâs like this random cis guy skipped right over transgender 101, 102, 201, etc. and stumbled directly into Transgender Nirvana.
âforbidden knowledgeâ
Pansy: You ever laugh so hard you grab your boobs?
Hermione: No, and it also doesnât explain why your hands are on mine
Hermione points her enchanted dagger towards the Slytherin boyâs throat. One word and sheâll swipe it. One word, and sheâll end it all.
âYouâre beautiful,â Harry says, looking up in wonder. And Hermioneâs thoughts come to a screeching halt.
