Here is my Secret Samol piece for 2025! For @fr0ghole who asked for Phrygian x Corrasion in a toxic situationship! Decided to move away from writing this year and do some tapestry and I had so much fun with it.
(Under the cut I've put some thoughts about why I did certain things, some close-ups, and some of the tapestry stuff for people who care about that part!)
First of all, some detail on decisions! As soon as I saw this prompt I was all in, and I definitely wanted something abstract, and the idea of Corrasion wearing down the mountains while Phyrigian desperately tried to keep them together wouldn't leave me alone. What's the point of showing a situationship between two abstract concepts without getting a little abstract with it yourself? I also wanted to show the way that the political ideologies between the two clash and intersect.
My intial idea had the water being far more dynamic and less stylised, but I didn't have a tapestry frame large enough, so I pared things back. The design/cartoon I ended up with was this, which is much more manageable with my equiptment and skill level:
I really wanted to give the idea that they were influencing each other though (for better or worse!) so I wanted to have their colours affecting the other. It was easy enough to decide to add some blue into the mountain colour mix at the base, but I couldn't figure out how to do trailing wires into the water - I didn't want them to be solid gold, and I didn't really have enough space to do them looping etc. I ended up using pick and pick with a blue and a blue-gold colour mix to give the impression of the wires being inside the water
The loops around the mountains were the one thing that stayed throughout the entire drafting process (I love the idea of Phyrigian being large and spread out!) but if I was re-doing this piece I'd make it easier on myself by doing larger loops and doing them line by line (I did the mountains first and it was hard to line everything up as I beat down)
The final part of this was the sky - I really wanted the colours to be reminicent of the Twilight Mirage, and so I ended up on a green-purple mix. My initial plan also had planets in the background, but I changed this as I wanted to evoke both partizan and the stellar combuster with the red sun.
The sun was the hardest and also the most fun part of it - more complex hatching and colour mixing than I've done, but I got far more confident in my skills as I went.
Tapestry talk: I did it in discrete sections, with three colours: red only, a red and sky mix, and the sky colour only. The first section was hatching between the sky and the red-sky mix. Then a section of just the mix. Then a section of hatching between the red and the red-sky mix, and then finally just the red.
I really wanted it to look like diffused light and I think it paid off!
To anyone who got this far thank you!! I had so much fun doing this, and I will definitely be doing a tapestry again next year, when hopefully I have a larger frame and better skills to get even more detailed!!
This was such a blast and I've loved Friends At The Table for a decade now. Happy Secret Samol!
My first Secret Samol, and I had some great prompts! Hereās my piece about Liberty and Discoveryās strange relationship to Candidacy throughout the years, on and off the record.Ā
how fucking late am i to realizing that daisy was extremely influential in jonās choice of not taking live statements anymore, bc i feel like im really late to this party
hi im back with transcript screenshots. im just having a lot of feelings about the way daisy adamantly dismisses any interpretation of her past behavior as being somehow divorced from her, or wholly the influence of the hunt.Ā
(142)
(146)
what struck me most when i re-listened to the daisy scenes in s4 was that thereās even an instance of jon making this argument, which seems particularly surprising given how heās one of daisyās victims (especially now that weāve heard his feelings about daisy kidnapping him in s5).Ā
(153)
but it makes sense when you consider the way heās been struggling throughout the seasons with his monstrous urges. and i think about how daisy wont let him entertain any angle that would let him excuse her(/his) behavior. she helps him deal w the reality that itās all him, and how he acts is his choice.Ā
im not saying that, without daisy, jon wouldāve given into his desire to take live statements - i truly believe that would have been his ultimate decision. but it might have been a lot more difficult for him to come to that decision if he didnāt have someone like daisy to reflect and exemplify his struggles. especially considering how little support he was getting from the other characters throughout the season.
(146)
(also, a small but interesting note, at least to me: i didnāt notice any instances during or after the intervention in 146 where daisy comments on jonās feeding. unlike the others, she doesnāt ever tell him that he shouldnāt do it or that itās bad heās done it so much already. i think it interesting because of anyone, she knows how it feels to want to hunt in a similar way, and she understands the weight of the responsibility for giving into the desires. but i guess she understands itās not her place to pass judgement)
ANYWAY.. tldr i care about jon and daisy and their s4 relationship a whole⦠lotā¦
@zhonglis-3d-booty hell yeah! Daisy is the only one I can think of who holds him fully accountable but doesn't demonize him for it, and that's such an interesting line to walk

It was not the first time Jon flinched back from her touch. Before the Choke, it was all he could do to not flee each time she entered a room, fidgeting fingers shielding the bruises that were slow to fade and knife marks that wouldnāt fade at all. But the first time Jon flinched from his Daisy, his friend Daisy, a look of such sharp regret passed her face that apologies spilled from his mouth before he could calm his racing heart.Ā Ā
Heād just told a particularly stupid jokeāone that made him smug with pride when Daisy barked a noise that was both groan and laughāand she reached out to ruffle his hair. Her hand shot out too quickly. Jonās pulse raced rabbit-quick in his throat, a siren song, and the urge to tear at it with teeth and claws twisted her gut in shame. Ā
It took some time to get Jon to stop apologizing, and even longer to calm him. I know you werenāt going to hurt me, I trust you, he said again and again. Her own apologies and offers to keep her hands to herself only seemed to spark more fear in his eyes. And then a different kind of fear shone through, hollow and echoing. āPlease donāt stop touching me,ā he said, barely loud enough to hear.
Daisy paused and looked at him, really looked at him, trying to see through the eyes of a friend rather than a Hunter or penitent. Curled in on himself like a brittle plant left forgotten on a windowsill, clinging to life long after everyone forgot to water it. His own scarred hands gripping scarred arms, as if he could infuse warmth into his bones. The gaze staring back at her so, so hungry, starving, but for neither food nor secrets.
Slowly, slowly, Daisy held out a hand.
When she paused it halfway between them, confusion flitted across Jonās face. She turned her palm up and waited.
Jon drew a deep breath as he reached forward and took her hand in both of his. With a furtive glance to her face, always fearful of a misstep, he guided it to his own shoulder. Daisy let it rest there a moment before squeezing gently; tension eased out of him as she brushed her thumb across the bony points and hollows. And then suddenly he grinned, playful, before comically curling along her arm into a clumsy half-embrace. She made sure to move slowly as she wrapped her other arm around him.
The next time Daisy laughed at (yet another) terrible joke, she lifted her hand, slowly, pausing halfway. Jon rolled his eyes with a belabored sigh and guided her fingers to his hair. He squawked in feigned protest as Daisy ruffled it ruthlessly, and she grinned sharp and fierce and adoring.
