oh my gosh i forgot this even happened but i was having sleep paralysis last night (i was barely conscious btw) but i wasn't shitting myself as i usually do when i get sleep paralysis, so i was like fuck it let me shift with this and god was it easy.

She looks to her left where her publisher is. A brightly colored woman whom Y/N and I have had the pleasure of working with since Y/N was sixteen and working on her debut album. She nods in response, looking carefully at my phone which is recording. We both laugh in response to that.

Ok, ok, then yes! Thank you! That means I’ll know the general consensus of what people will be thinking. Wow!

Is that something you’re nervous about?

I mean, kind of? Drop Dead, and in extension—surprise—my third album, is such a different vibe from my previous two. Even just appearance wise, I wanted to do something different. I think it’s obvious what that vibe is from Drop Dead to the end of the album. So no surprises!

Why is that?

To me, debut and sophomore albums are so interconnected. Looking at some of my favorite artists [you list a few of yours], I can’t help but notice where those similarities are. My first two albums are so dramatically similar, on purpose, and so I wanted to go dramatically different for my third album. It helped that it was a completely different emotion I was writing about.

Was writing about love something you always wanted your third album to be about?

Oh no! She laughs. It was just something that magically worked out. I never want to force anything.

How would you describe your life right now?

Busy, lovely, and…pink.

And what phase of love would you say you’re in?

I mean right now, sitting across from you, platonic. I love this by the way. I think friendships with women are so fulfilling and I’m so glad to have mine. So this is amazing. But in general, I’m very happy with my life.

And very vague.

We laugh at that and as if almost we summoned him, Y/N’s phone lights up with a text notification from the inspiration behind Drop Dead. She sends me a sheepish smile as she quickly texts him back. When she sets her phone down again, her lock screen is lit up only for a moment longer—a picture of the two of them (taken by me).

What was the writing process behind Drop Dead like?

So different! I love love songs, but writing them is so much harder. I felt so cringey at times, but it is just something I worked through. A lot of pushing from the people I worked with…and you, and whoever. It also helped that the muse of this album is one of my favorite people ever.

What was the inspiration behind this song?

A really, really good first date.

Do you think anyone guessed it would be about that?

Oh God no! Scrolling through the comments of my announcement, all of it is, “who is this about,” “who’d she break up with,” “another song to cry to.” I think the number of people who thought it might be a love song could be counted on one hand. And, like, guys! The announcement was pink and full of flowers!
