Roberto Beristain, father of American citizens, Indiana business owner and husband of a woman who voted for Donald Trump, was deported to Mexico late Tuesday night for being an undocumented immigrant.
Beristain — who has a Social Security card, work permit and driver’s license — was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in March during one of his voluntary yearly check-ins, which allowed him to stay in the United States. And on Tuesday, officials went a step further by expelling him from the country.

Born in Guangzhou, China, Bow-sim Mark started seriously training in Wushu during high school, specializing in Tai Chi and Northern Shaolin. At the time, women who studied martial arts were almost unheard of. However, her talents caught the attention of the Great Grandmaster Fu Wing Way, one of the most decorated martial artists in China and founder of Fu Style Tai Chi. He ended up taking her in as his private student.
In 1984, Mark won a gold medal at the first International Tournament of T’ai chi ch’uan in Wuhan City. In 1995, she was named Black Belt magazine’s Kung-Fu artist of the year. Before Mark immigrated to the U.S., she was already famous all over China not just because she was a talented female martial artist, but because she was also better than most men in her craft.
“Everything is harder for a woman,” Mark told NextShark with some help in translating from her daughter Chris Yen. “If a man has to work at 100% to excel, a woman must work at 150%! Not just in martial arts but in any field in order to be taken seriously.”

After teaching at her master’s school for 10 years, she emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1975 where she became one of the first people to introduce Wushu to the West.
“There were only a few Chinese kung-fu schools in Chinatown and mostly karate schools around the suburbs,” Mark said. “My school was the first Chinese ‘Wushu’ school and at the time, Wushu was not known yet in the West.”
As a successful martial arts master who’s had students open up schools themselves, Sifu Mark broke down what makes a good teacher. She notes that while there are many styles of Tai Chi, all tai chi can be judged by six characteristics and six requirements:
“The characteristics are that the movement should be circular, relaxed, calm, continuous, and done with intent and energy. The requirements are that the spine is naturally straight, the shoulders and elbows are sunk, the chest is empty, the movement originates in the waist, the pelvis is at a natural angle, and yin and yang are clear.”
There has been a rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans since Trump singled out China and Japan as foreign enemies along with ISIS.
The vast majority of these crimes have been anti-Chinese and anti-Chinese violence has been rising in some areas since 2015, but as usual Sinophobia is hurting everyone who could be mistaken for Chinese.

When did he single out Japan and China? What are these hate crimes? Please post a link somewhere. Someone telling you to go back to China like it says in the article IS NOT A HATE CRIME. I mean, you’re probably gonna visit anyway and if no one told you to go back to your country before, TOUGH. Personally I would love to visit China and being black… Whoah we get told go back to wherever by anyone, NOT a hate crime deal with it.
I have ALOT of friends from Harbing, Iiwoo, Taiwan, Macau, Singapore and Hong Kong before you start thinking I am disconnected from real Asia people. But I live in Hawai'i where everybody is generally hostile when they feel like it and because Chinese are generally doin’ alright economically they don’t really care what people say.

And even if being told to “go back to ____” isn’t physically violent in itself, it is still an act of racial violence because it’s rooted in the belief that Asians don’t belong in America and xenophobia. It comes from the same hatred that motivates people to assault and kill Chinese people. And most diaspora people don’t regularly visit Asia. I personally have never been in China or Taiwan and neither of my parents have been back there since they came to the US. So no we are not going to “deal with it” just because black people also get told to “go back”, that’s some real fucked up logic that doesn’t make sense. At all.
And “Chinese people are rich so there’s no problem” is a wildly racist assumption on the level of Trump thinking that the entire nation of China is trying to destroy the American economy. Fuck off man
Not even getting into the fact that plenty of Asians are Muslim or are typically mistaken and attacked for being Muslim, hate crimes against Asian people, especially racially motivated sexual assaults against Asian women, are hugely underreported. Reporting our hate crimes and tracking them separately doesn’t take away from other PoC because we’re all in this together. And no it’s not just “go back to China” because although I used to hear that one almost every day in the 80s: we’re talking physical assault and murder as well.
